Good game, would be a perfect game if they dubbed it. It only has English subtitles.

I'm honestly just not a fan of the mechanics in this one. Love Fire Emblem though.

Not my cup of tea for jrpg. The battle system is off putting and sometimes cheap.

An insult to Fire Emblem fans

I can't think of a JRPG I've hated more than this game. Boring, nonsensical story. Annoying controls. Disappointing battle animations. You can't view your enemies until you select what attack/ability you want to use. But worst of all is the voice acting. I am a huge fan of JRPG's; Final Fantasy, Persona, Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest, etc. I can honestly say, with absolutely no exaggeration, that Tokyo Mirage has the absolute worst, most obnoxious voice acting of any JRPG or anime I have ever played or watched. It's so ear bleeding trash that I wound up muting the voices entirely. The cherry on top had to be every time you push a button in battle or move your analog stick to select something, the characters have to make a comment. The same like, 2 comments, over, and over, and over, and over, ad infinitum. You also have no idea what they're saying in battle (not that you would want to) because it's in Japanese and Atlus decided to include zero subtitles. Despite turning off the voices thus sparing the ears of myself, my wife, and my cat, the game play is just so bland that I barely managed to get through 2 hours of the game. I am astonished that other reviewers are recommending this game to Persona fans. Persona 5 is one of my favorite games of all time and I can't stress enough how terrible this game is. If you insist on wasting your time, go sit in a dark room and stare at the wall. You'll enjoy it infinitely more than playing this game. Considering Atlus' stellar track record, I can forgive them for this game. Barely. But man is it a stain on their reputation.

    Fire Emblem in Name Only

Fire Emblem fan and lover of JRPGs here. This was my first Atlus RPG and I was disappointed to find the Fire Emblem elements barely exist at all. I wasn't expecting a main-series FE game by any means, but the anime/J-pop idol story and mechanics have only the barest window dressing of FE characters and gameplay. Sure, that character is "Chrom", even though his design and personality are totally different and he has no memory of who he is. May as well have just invented a different character at that point. As far as JRPGs this seemed pretty bog-standard to me. Environments are very simple and level design feels akin to a Gamecube or PS2 game. Dungeons are mainly simple corridors with treasure chests sprinkled throughout. Combat boils down to "discover supereffective moves through trial-and-error, then use them until you win". The whole experience felt like a grind. Your tolerance for anime tropes may very, but this game rubbed me the wrong way. The obligatory underage girl character is whining "onii-chaaaaaaan" at every man in the room less than a minute after her introduction. A middle-aged male character who's 250 pounds at the most is fatshamed immediately by the protagonists, and even in his own character bio. Gross. It's also worth noting that the game's text is in English, but voices are Japanese only. I wouldn't consider this a problem, except that there are no subtitles in combat, ever, so character chatter and other mid-battle remarks go straight over the player's head. Would have been an easy thing to fix in this Switch re-release, but nope. The game's art style is attractive, and the original pop songs and electronic music are really well-produced. Unfortunately that's all I can say about it in a positive light. Skip it unless you're a huge Shin Megami Tensei or idol fan.
