Looking to convert several VHS tapes to disk which this should allow me to do. Family video made a long time ago.

Since you mention that you were "using it a ton", I wonder if you're cleaned the tape transport path. There is a discussion in the DIY forums at http://www.doityourself.com/forum/home-entertainment-center-tvs-stereos-vcrs-dvds-bluray-media-players/22925-vcr-eats-tapes.html#b which includes detailed instructions for cleaning the tape transport path.
If the unit proves to be defective you can initiate the warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime within its warranty period.

It'll play an existing vhs tape but can't record on it. I tried to get in touch with support/Toshiba but they have been non-responsive. A waste of money!

Please make sure that the VCR function is selected by pressing "VCR" on the remote and confirm that the VCR indicator is illuminated. Page 14 of the User Manual available at support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=3005734 provides detailed instructions for VHS recording.
If the unit proves to be defective you can initiate the warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime during the warranty period.

When my old player broke I thought I'd have trouble finding a replacement ... but Best Buy had it readily available, Excellent sales clerk, excellent installation people.
