We kept having trouble with other DVD and Blue-Ray and VCR units. This unit set up easily, has been trouble-free, and has a friendly remote.

My mom wanted to retain the ability to play her VHS tapes but realized that new rentals were all DVDs. This suited her very well

    Customer service

Extremely disappointed in the customer service. During the install, FAQs did not answer my question. Very hard to reach a live person to discuss. When I did ( twice ), I had trouble understanding the service rep. They did not seem to understand my question. When I went back to Best Buy and asked my question, the sales person understood and I got my answer. This did not give me warm fuzzies about buying another Toshiba product.

The remote is the worst to work with.

I have a Samsung upstairs & it is a dream compared to this Toshiba. I would have returned it cuz I'm not happy with it but I don't use it often. The buttons on the remote are small & crammed together & instructions are not very clear. I needed a new VCR, mainly, & this one's ratings were good. The Best Buy stores are very good! Thanks, lt42

    Not impressed. No Auto Tracking....!

Purchased for my mother that still loves to view her VHS movie collection, along with DVD's. Maybe we got a dud but was not impressed with the build quality of this item. From the get-go the VCR seemed to play a little sluggish and there is no AUTO Tracking. Really? C'mon, VCR's made 15 years ago had this feature. Well after it ate and ruined five tapes, over a six week span, I had to return this item.

I too wish I had read these reviews before buying this VHD/DVD combo player for my disabled daughter who has a huge VHS collection and cannot operate the DVD player. It broke my heart tonight when she brought me three of her favorite Wizard of Oz tapes. The tape had gotten stuck, in each case, and shredded as it was ejected. Since it was stuck, she of course pulled on it and these very old and precious tapes are now useless. Worst of all, I looked up my receipt and the limited warranty expired 4 days ago! I wish I had bought the 2 year extended warranty but we've had a lot of these machines and they have always lasted 2 years. Bummer. I guess I'll just have to buy her a new one. But it WON'T be a Toshiba!

Although the remote is not very good, this unit was fine for about six months, then it decided to turn off on its own. It will not stay on longer than 30 seconds. Support stinks, so I am going to trash it and get a non-Toshiba replacement.

    Two for one

Price was a little steep I feel, but I guess that's because the VHS side of life is becoming more and more outdated. The picture quality isn't the greatest for the price you pay. Other than that, it's a nice buy because it's for the kids anyway. And I know they don't know the difference or care either way.

Not worth the Price, BUY IT NEW!!!!

If you want this unit (and they are actually a good unit, my toddlers broke my first one) buy it new. I bought this refurbished unit and it set up just fine (no hdmi cable though). However the instructions are unclear as to what type of DVD's it uses to record. I went through $60 worth of dvd's until I found DVD+RW which was the only kind that it would take and at least give me the option to record to and as sson as I got it ready an error comes on and it turns out that the unit that was supposed to be refurbished was still broken. Buyer be ware on this.

    Broke down after 15 minutes

I brought this home and hooked it up. It played poorly with lines on the screen. I tried to adjust with the tracking buttons but that did not remove the lines. I tried several tapes to see if it was just the tape but each one had a problem. After about 15 minutes it wouldn't play at all. It would not respond at all to the remote or the button on the vcr itself. I took it back to the store and got a refund. Judging by the other reviews my guess is it's cheaply made. If you get lucky you may get a good one but be prepared to return it.
