making dvd recording is simple, quality only so-so

Making recordings onto dvds is simple (after you have done it a few times). However, the quality of the dvd recordings is only so-so at best. Quality of dvd recordings from HD TV source at best-quality setting (one hour per disc) is only fair. Quality of dvd recordings at other settings (two, four, six or eight hours per disc) ranges from fair to horrible. Claim re "HD Upconversion" is a lie -- a best-quality-recorded dvd, even when played on an up-converting Bluray player, has an image that is worse than a commercial dvd. However, even though the quality is disappointing, it is better than the quality of recordings on vhs tapes. But, if ( like me) you are saving recordings off of your DVR, using this machine (or a similar one) seems to be the only option available. (I have not yet transferred vhs tapes onto dvds. But the quality of those dvds certainly will be much worse than recordings from DVR onto dvd)

I got this mainly to play VHS tapes and use it to convert old camcorder recordings. I wish it had a tuner.

Second Unit - Hope this one lasts longer

This unit was a replacement of the original that I bought about a year ago. The first unit was seldom used as I bought it to play VHS tapes and DVDs for my grandson when he visited. As such, the unit was not abused or overused. Unfortunately, when I tried to use it recently, it would not play tapes or DVDs. I brought it back to Best Buy to fix but the Service Rep informed me that they don't fix these units, they only replace them. Good thing that I bought the service/replacement contract. Best Buy gave me a new unit but told me that the service contract was ended due to the new replacement. To hedge myself against this unit failing, I purchased another service contact ($40+) on the new unit. If this unit fails then I want a full refund.

This is a handsome unit. It is well designed, easy to use and functions quietly and well. If you are not ready to throw away all your vhs tapes, this will give you the best of both worlds.

I bought this unit to covert my VHS tapes to DVD's for archiving and cataloging, and it performs the job very easily and accurately. I love the DVD title naming and indexing process, which allows you to index the DVD for quick skipping to indexed selections. The DVD player produces a beautiful picture with its upconversion feature. I liked the unit so much that I bought a second one to increase my throughput. The price is a little on the high side, but the unit is well built and the performance is solid. Another great feature is the digital input on the front of the unit, which allows for easy conversion of my Digital 8 tapes. A winner all around.

Had this item in the past. Great for transferring video tapes to DVDs. The old one had to be repaired - remote no longer worked. Repair was expensive, but less than a new one. Was told that the problem was in the optical signal receiver. Or something like that. A while later, the same thing happened. Hope this new one lasts longer.

Good picture quality during playback. Haven't done any recording yet. The information on the box did not say that it has input connections on the front so that you can hook your camcorder up easily. The only down note is that it is not a 4 head VCR.

I did some reading before buying and this seemed like the best machine for the money. So far, I'm not disappointed. It was simple to set up. The instructions for transferring our old VCR home movies to DVD were easy to follow. The quality of the movies actually improved with the transfer eliminating most of the static.

I needed to convert the family videos (VHS) to DVD. Didn't need anything special - - no high definition. Easy to set up and works great for this purpose. I'm happy with the purchase.

Perhaps a bit of overkill, but for those of us still with vcr tapes, this is a godsend...it also will convert your vcr's to dvd's...one must do a bit of study and experimentation to bring it off...but to convert all to dvd, it is worth it.
