I wonder if you've reviewed the User's Guide at http://support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=2842852 where the HDMI connection and caveat details can be found on page 20.

I couldn't get another as they didn't have another in stock and I didn't want to take a chance on ordering one to find out it didn't work either. So I am unsure if it is a good product or not.

I hope you'll reconsider replacing your DVR620 with the same product since I'm sure you selected it based on its features being a good match to your needs. This is where the product reviews posted by others can clear up your concerns of whether or not this is a good product, since (as of 7/24/15) it has an average rating of 4-stars with 85% of reviewers stating that they would recommend it to a friend.
