Great for what I needed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this VCR/DVD player/recorder because I have a lot of VHS tapes that are no longer very useful. I wanted to convert them to DVDs. This Toshiba player/recorder is the only product I could find anywhere that would allow me to do the conversion. It works well. The VHS tape goes in one side and the DVD in the other. The dub feature allows you to copy the contents of the tape to a DVD. I am referring to my own videotapes. I believe that commercial tapes are copy protected and will not work. I have a large project ahead of me, first getting an inventory of the tapes, where one scene ends and another begins, and then transferring them to DVDs. The tapes are in chronological order, but by selectively copying, I can put them together by subject, (family, dogs, vacations, etc.) I have not started the project, but I have made one test DVD. It worked perfectly. Since I had a DVD recorder in the past, I had a somewhat intituitive idea of how it works, but don't worry, the unit comes with a comprehensive owner's manual. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine. I would recommend this product to anyone who has a large collection of personal (not commercial) videotapes that you would like to convert to DVD before the tapes self destruct.

Surprisingly good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Based on the review of the Toshiba recorder without the vcr I was not expeting very good results from the DVR620 player. Surprisingly I am very satified with the product. The picture quality is not great but pretty good and it is easy to use. Have had it for 2 1/2 months and so far no problems.

Record quality is very good; however, ...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The provided manual is slightly above average; however, there are some subjects that are murky. Additionally, the manual states that it can record copy righted videos, well on some yes and others no. I also have a Sony DVD Recorder, and it will NOT record copy righted movies from cable or VHS. This Toshiba DVD recorder will record copy righted movies from cable; however, there are quite a few movies in my VHS library, that will NOT record; which is what this device is all about. I suggest that you turn off the auto finalizing feature, as it prevents you from adding titles. This machine's inputs and outputs quantity are impressive.

Does what I wanted in this product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At $200, this product satisfies what I was looking for to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. Until recently, my options seemed to be dealing with hooking up a VHS player to a converter, such as Dazzle, streaming that into my PC, then creating a DVD from there. Lots of steps, lots of resources required on the PC, etc. I will admit that this method gives you lots of opportunities for editing, etc. but I wanted to dub tapes quickly and easily. I've done the Dazzle thing and while it works, I didn't want to do that this time. I had to call Toshiba tech support many times to understand how to make the functions work, but they stuck with me and were very helpful. Since solving the issue, I can easily run a tape and dub it to a DVD disk. This is important because when my children were little, I used a camcorder that took full sized VHS cassettes and sat on my shoulder (I know, I'm ancient). Another nice advantage is that this deck is relatively compact and I can play tapes and DVDs on it and it has the hi-res output for DVDs, making them look nearly like Blu-Ray. I chose this product partly because I've always had great luck with Toshiba and so far, this has not been an exception.

Piece of junk
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.FIrst I will tell you I bought this to replace my 15 year old Panasonic VCR. I wanted a DVD recorder and also felt the dubbing aspect would be great. When you get it out of the box,,if you were not aware (I was), this unit has no tuner and no coax input or output. SO you need some type of tuner for off the air recording and you need minumum RCA jacks. I will say this thing is pretty complex (the manual is like for the space shuttle) but although I am a senior, I was able to get it to partially do what I am looking to use it for. However I never did get to try the dubbing feature. I will say the DVD recorder records a very nice picture off the air and is versityle in that respect. But here it is,,the VCR portion is pure junk. I have had this unit for 6 weeks and the VCR portion is broken. It will playback tapes recorded on my SONY combo unit, but it won't playback tapes it records. About 50% of the time it will record and playback at SP,,but never on SLP. Funny thing is if you tape something on SLP, it will play on other VCRs but not on itself. So trying to dub some of my old VCR tapes onto disk is pretty impossible right now. BTW,,when the tape portion stops it sounds like the entire thing is going to explode with the loud clunk it makes. Of course it breaks 5 weeks after I buy if so Best Buy won't take it back for an excahnge. I am not done arguing with them but I think I am out of luck and I don't think it is very fair they sell junk then won't exchange it. For the warranty I am still fighting also with Toshiba. As someone else posted, Toshiba will want me to send this back to them,,but they claim I never registered the warranty, which I did. Now they have made me photocopy the reciepts and take a picture of the box it came in, email that to them, and they will let me know when it is registered so I can fight them to get it repaired. I have read other reviews that pretty much say the unit will be gone for a month before they get it back. So if things change, I will edit this but for now I am pretty sorry I bought this and I think Best Buy should treat thier customers a little better.

Great Combo Player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Toshiba VCR / DVD player is easy to set up. It did not come with any HDMI cables. It it relatively easy to use and move back and forth between the different players. Picture quality is very good. I like the look and overall size, and color of this VCR / DVD player.

Good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great product to use for transferring videotape to DVD, but not as easy to use when recording DVR to DVD, but it works. Picture quality is good but could be better. I still like it though. Can't really comparison shop as these types of products are becoming obsolete.

Suits my needs perfectly!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best $200 I've spent in a long time. I have been able to transfer HOURS of vhs taps to dvd while doing other things at the same time and it has been great. It is simple to set up, easy to use, and I do not have to babysit it while it works. The only thing bothersome to me is the editing instructions, which I have not begun to try to tackle. Other than that, it has resolve something I have stressed over for years.

It worked
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had a model 670 (it has a tuner), but both recorders quit. The tuner still works on the 670. Using the model 620 (no tuner) I was able to connect the 670 and use as a tuner for the 620. To make a long story short, I didn't have to buy a tuner and I can record tv programs. By any chance if you have a combo one from before that has a tuner that works (like my situation). Don't buy a tuner just yet. I shopped around and they aren't cheap. It can be done. Lucky me:-)
