    Great DVD recorder and dubber

I've used this DVD recorder for over 2 years. I use it mainly to record off my old tube-type TV, It makes very good quality DVDs. I also dub the occasional VCR tape to DVD disc. I plan on getting a HDTV and hope I can use it as well with it. I've played a few of my recorded DVDs on friend's HDTVs with mixed results. It is supposed to upconvert up to 1080p with an HDMI cable. So we'll see how it works to record new DVDs and play my older ones on HDTV. I've used component cables with my CRT TV.

    Don't buy this recorder.

I purchased the Toshiba DVD620KU hoping to transfer VHS tapes to DVD and record movies from TV. Transfering VHS tapes to DVD was easy but it also produced noticable background noise when playing back the DVD. Recording TV movies to DVD was easy but a grey horizontal shadow moving from left to right on my tv screen during the entire length of the recording was apparent when playing back the DVD. Toshiba says my DVD/VCR recorder is defective but I couldn't return it for a replacement because they don't have any replacements. The model must be discontinued. My only other option was to get a coupon from Toshiba to purchase another product. Toshiba wouldn't give me a refund. I don't want a coupon from Toshiba. Since I didn't return the recorder to Best Buy within 15 days of my purchase, Best Buy couldn't offer me a refund. I am out $219.99 plus $15.40 sales tax. If you purchase a Toshiba DVD620KU it might be defective.

This product is so timely, it won't be long until the VHS disappears. It is the answer to preserving all of my cherished home video's. The manual is a little complicated but do able. The only thing I noticed is the exposed screws are sharp and did scratch my cabinet so take care, lift it, don't slide it to avoid scratches.

    Not a Problem in Sight

I bought my DVR 620 on 04/17/2013. It was up and running from that day to now with no problems in operation, in fact my current cable channel choices are so poor at the present time that this unit has always had a DVD or a VHS media in it since the above date. All of the functions that this unit claims to possess, it does! I researched this buy very meticulously and my final decision turned out to be one of my better ones. Thank you, Best Buy and Toshiba....... DJC

    Great quality for dvd recording/playback

After using a standard DVD recorder, the upconvert capability of this machine yields a high quality video reproduction. It records home VHS and DVR with faithful quality and great audio. I had a little trouble using the S-Video input, but no trouble with the other input/outputs. For folks wanting to utilize a cable input, you need to realize that is only possible with VHS recorders; not VHS player only and DVD recorders. In fact, I don't see this feature on ANY VHS/DVD combo. The video quality would not be "up to par", even if it was capable, which is why I'm sure it wasn't included as an input/output option. My suggestion is to spend a little time learning the features and experimenting. I've had my machine for about 3.5 years with no problems at all.

I've had many combo unit's, though this Toshiba is the first that enables a person to record or playback in the VHS or DVD modes. I've only had it a month, so I'm certainly in the initial learning stages. It's a CLEAN well designed unit that I'm looking forward to many year's of happiness using. To one & all, I say buy it and have an exciting expierence!

Recorder functions & records VCR Tapes To DVD Discs, But I Cannot No Way Possible; figure out how to Finalize the DVDs where they will play on another DVD Player.. Toshiba does not have a Customer Service Contact # you can call to get any help. This is why I give this product only 2 Stars.

We bought this product to transfer our library of VHS tapes to DVD. The product we bought was easy to set up and very easy to use. We can watch our VHS tapes or watch DVDs and we can transfer fron Tape to DVD or TV to DVD. It's a great device. We have even converted some VHS movies and home movies to DVD and sent them to friends and relatives.

    Good dvd/recorder combo for price

The look of the product is modern enough and fits right into my entertainment console. However, I think the actual operation of the player/remote is way more complicated than it should be. In all honesty I am still learning how to use it with my other components. Hopefully it will work out great. By the way Best Buy was able to do a price match on this item so I believe I got the best price possible.

Absolutely the worst dvd recorder that I have ever tried to use. Set-up and connection went fine, user manual easy to follow, but could not get it to record on disk. Kept getting disk error "cannot record on this disk". It says it is a multi-format player, recorder...but that is absolutely not true. I tried both +R and -R disks, a variety of name brands including the ones recommended in the manual, and disk speeds from 4x to 16x without any success. The only disk I could get to record a movie on was a -RW, which even after finalizing would not play in any other dvd player. I returned it after 2 weeks of frustration. Very dissatisfied with this machine! Best Buy was wonderful about the return, however. After the return further research online turned up lots of people having this same issue with this machine, so I would definitely say to steer clear of this one.

Thank you for the review, Katluvr, and sorry to hear about the recording problem with your DVR620.

I understand that you already returned the unit but for the benefit of other DVR620 users reading this review who might need help with their unit, Toshiba Support is available at 888-592-0944 and the 'Video Players & Recorders' message board of the Toshiba Forums community at http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Players-Recorders/bd-p/b_blu-ray_troubleshooting is a great resource for 'how-to' type questions.

Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba

    Adequate, but with caveats!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Short answer- the unit does what I need- I record a LOT from TV to DVD. BUT, I had to return the first unit the SAME DAY since the DVD disc tray wouldn't open! Another reviewer had the same problem. The second one works like a charm, tho' picture quality noticeably lessens in EP mode. The MAIN reason I bought this is DVR/VCR combos are getting hard to find. The ONLY other model I could find was a Magnavox at K Mart. Same price, BUT it only uses DVD+R discs. This model uses both.

This machine is good for those who do not want a subscription DVR service and want to still watch VCR tapes and hopefully record them on to the DVD recorder. This machine has 1080 HDMI output which makes it great for those with HDTV. It will work with analog devices too. There will be a learning curve to using this machine but it will be worth it. We have had this device for 2 years with no problems. You will need a tuner if you want to watch broadcast stations. Someday these probably wont be available. Buy one while you can!
