    Toshiba DVR620KU

Subject: Quality of Product and Lack of Technical assistance I purchased a Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VCR as a gift. As I was having difficulty in setting it up according to the instruction. I called the help line(s) that accompanied the product. Each help line telephone number identified on the “STOP RETURN’” was either disconnected or only referred the customer to a web site. As I was at an in-laws home without internet, this became a fruitless effort. After approximately one hour of attempting to get assistance I contacted the Toshiba Computer assistance help line. The individual informed me to hold the power button for 30 seconds then shut it down for 15 minutes and try again. After following those instructions it was apparent that this products was not properly responding and of course waiting 15 minutes for ?? was (to me) just an attempt to leave me to my frustration. I returned this $250.00 product to the store and presently in search of another brand. This has not been my first experience with a Toshiba product, but with the assistance (NOT) received this will be my last.

    Overall terrific product

I had the previous model (DVR610) for over five good years of recording off cable TV and making transfers from VHS to DVD and vice versa before it finally blew out. But the results were always great, so I'm thrilled they kept the product up in a new, improved version. I bought the DVR620 a few months ago, and the overall results are comparable. Would recommend it to friends (and have!).

Not enough information to hook up

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

After calling tech support from Toshiba and calling Best Buy store in forum neither one could help. Finally Toshiba tech stated it would not work on free digital tv . You must have cable or satellite tv hook up. It doesn't say this anywhere on paper work in box or on the box. Now I have to make a special trip back to store and stand in line to return this recorder. I had to wait for 45 minutes in store due to lack of salesmen just to ask questions about hooking it up to tv..

Thank you for the review, rosco5397 and sorry to hear that you had some sort of an issue getting your DVR620 to work with your TV.

The product specification sheet at support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=2812336 includes a footnote that reads “External tuner source required to record television programming.” An external TV tuner, such as that found on cable & satellite TV consoles and on TVs themselves can be used to send content to the DVR620 for recording. If your TV (or antenna/cable/satellite source) has audio & video outputs that can be matched to the inputs on the DVR620, then you would be able to record broadcast TV signals.

Please see page 19 of the User's Guide at support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=2842852 for more information about connecting to an external tuner.

Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba. Toshiba

    Not compatible with PAL VHS

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this to transfer some old tapes from the 90's to DVD. Not compatible with PAL VHS. PAL is the video standard used in Europe and other parts of the world. The United States used the NTSC. While playing a tape recorded in PAL format on this device you will experience a high-pitched shift in audio! And a distorted image.

Records fine, but DVDs won't copy

Our old DVR died and we needed to replace it. We are a dance company. We shoot rehearsals and performances with our DV camera and make DVDs with this unit and copy the DVDs for rehearsal purposes. The unit seems to burn the DVDs fine, but no DVD made with this unit has been copyable, which is the whole point for our purposes. We have a dubbing tower which rejects all DVDs from this new DVR. All other DVDs copy fine. Will have to return it.

    Dead after a week.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First off, I am NOT pleased at all that my DVR620 failed to turn on less than a week after purchasing it. Toshiba Tech Support has proved to be not any better than the product at this point. I called Toshiba, and after being put on hold for over 20 minutes, I was told an e-mail would be sent to me within 24 hours with further directions for my return. 48 hours later, and no e-mail, I called Tech Support again, and yet again was put on hold (Only 10 minutes this time - Still not impressed). I have given my information (name, product model number, serial number, phone number, e-mail address, etc...) at LEAST four different times. Isn't your customer database smarter than that? The amount of times that I had to repeat myself is beyond ridiculous. I just spent $39.75 to return my brand new DVR620 for an infant failure repair. I would have thought that a Pre-Paid service could have been provided for such a failure. I certainly hope that the machine works as expected upon its return. I also hope that the DVD (Captian America) that was stuck in the machine when it died is returned in usable condition as well.

    Poor customer support

Like other customers, felt that not enough info was given, i.e. no external coaxial connection, must use external cable box. Never was able to record anything from cable source. Bought unit on a Friday, tried to hook it up on Saturday, none of the listed phone numbers would allow me to talk to anyone, customer service only available on weekdays! Seemed to play factory dvds ok. Finally through Best Buy was able to get a valid Toshiba phone number & was informed it will not work without an external tuner or cable box. I am returning this asap, will steer clear of anything by Toshiba. As a footnote my tv manufacturer (Viso) & Geek Squad were excellent in helping me solve my problem.

    did not work

This product did not work for me. Tried several times. Recorded VHS to DVD and it did in its own format. Not sure what format it was. My good DVD player would not read the disks and my computer showed there was nothing on the disks. Directions in owners manual explained nothing. A product like this is useless and over priced. Returned next day.

Thank you for the review, Imon, and sorry to hear that you apparently didn't note the DVR620 manual's instructions titled "Playing the Discs in Other DVD Players."

That section of the User's Guide at support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=2842852 (beginning on page 31) explains how to "finalize" recorded discs in order to make them playable on other devices. This is a standard requirement of any DVD recorders and the DVR620 does not use a proprietary format.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba

Thank you for the review, auntraine, and sorry to hear that you're having trouble using your DVR620.

This unit can dub from VHS to DVD or from DVD to VHS, and can also record from any video source presented to its inputs, however it doesn't have a TV tuner so an external tuner (such as that on your TV) would be needed to record TV shows. However, no external drive is needed. The DVR620 includes drives for both DVD and VHS recording.

See page 37 of the User's Guide at http://support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=2842852 for further information on how to record.

Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba

    Not a good purchase

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is not a good purchase. The picture quality is only fair. It is difficult to set up, even with directions. The absence of a tuner makes it less than desirable, and you have to be directly in line with it to use the remote (no slouching comfortably on the couch). Seems to skip a lot. Certainly not worth what I paid for it!
