Good lap top great price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had several different laptops from a Small Asus tablet to a small touch screen gateway. And an older 13in MacBook. For the price this is a great computer. Has features and power of some of the more expensive computers. I needed a new computer and order it online and picked up instore. Which is really convience if you need it right away. I'm on a budget so that why I got this computer but It is a great laptop and worth every penny and more. Fast performs well and does everything I need it to do and more

Linux/Lubuntu friendly
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Handled Linux beautifully with no issues!! The quality of the machine, for the price, is excellent. The only issue is the type of CPU. This is not a gaming machine. However, for software development is more than adequate...is perfect. All the hardware was compatible with Lubuntu. The wireless card, sound and video worked right out of the box, without the need of any special configuration.

Excellent for what I need
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop for the price I paid online ( $200 ) was a steal. Window 8.1 is fast and has everything you could need! Also comes with word package for 1 yr at 50! I love the larger screen and for Internet, e-mail, word, and windows it's a easy choice to buy!

Gets the Job done
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What's there to say it doesn't do anything groundbreaking but it does get the job done if you're in need of a laptop that does all the basics this is your guy. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs an affordable laptop to do the bare minimum for their kids or for everyday use.

Good for the price but sound is not good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For $200 it is a good laptop, if you skype a lot like I do, expect low volume on the internal speaker. It's differcult to hear the other person. You say I should plug in a speaker? Well there is only one plug which was made only for a headset so if you plug in a speaker the microphone is shut off. My other toshiba c855-s5115 has a plug for speakers and a separate plug for microphone so no problem.

Slow but Sturdy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Slow, (It's Celeron) But good for Browsing, Office and emailing Only thing I do NOT like is that the touch pad is not centered on the wrist rest. Causes me to tap on the rest instead of the pad.

Works good.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good inexpensive laptop. I've only had one issue - sometime when I'm online, just brushing a key would make the size of text change. But it's still a good, cheap, and decent purchase in my opinion, when you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Great Entry Level Laptop!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought mine for $200 on sale this weekend. For the $, it's performance is good enough for me to surf the internet, and watch netflix with ease, and use Microsoft Office 2013, with no issues. The laptop will not win any awards for processing speed and/or fastest boot time, but it works for what I need it to do without having to break the bank or having to buy a tablet and/or chromebook. I back up my data frequently, so if it stops working, I just do a data transfer, and buy another cheap laptop...probably a toshiba...and I'm good to go.

PIECE OF GARBAGE
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wanted to purchase a low cost system for internet use downstairs. I have had luck with Toshiba computers in the past and thought I would buy this one. I expected it to be slow, but I also expected it to work. Slow is an overstatement for this snail. Not only did it take forever to do anything, it would consistently lose internet connection and then tell me that my modem was not working (when it was working just fine with any other device in the house). Downloaded all of the updates from Microsoft as well as the updates from Toshiba, but nothing helped. This thiing just does not perform. Even when hard wired to the modem it could not connect. I had to reboot a couple of times before it finally picked it up. I understand this is a cheap system, but it should work and this one does not. You will be deeply disappointed by this computer.

Posted .Thank you for the review, spd57, and sorry to hear that you are experiencing performance issues with your Satellite C55.
Though this is an entry-level laptop, you're right to expect it to work well for casual web browsing, email, social media, and similar low-demand applications. I think it's fair to say that the average star rating of 4.0 would be much lower if there were many customers sharing your experience.
Unfortuately, you seem to have received a defective system so I recommend either returning the unit to your retailer for replacement or contacting Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for further diagnosis and, if needed, to make warranty repair arrangements.
Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Great value!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me begin by saying that I give this 5-stars because for the PRICE, it cannot be beat! So a bit about our computing habits and why I chose this computer: I regularly buy new computers so my wife, three daughters, and I have fresh computers for work, school, and pleasure. My experience is that computers in this price range start slowing down significantly after about a year, and are just plain frustrating after two years. Because of that, I try to buy new computers once every two years, especially since we are not very computer savvy people that can constantly update computer hardware. I'm reaching two years on my wife's Toshiba computer, and it still works incredible! So far, I have bought three of these over the past few years. I am so satisfied, that I am about to buy a 4th (as we speak) to replace my daughter's Dell laptop. I bought the Dell laptop about the same time as this Toshiba two years ago, and the Dell is on it's last leg, while the Toshiba is still running strong. It's about expectation management. If you are constantly replacing computers like I am for your family, and are looking for a value, this is IT! None of us play anything more than Facebook games, and the computers are primarily for work and school. I'll be buying only this computer for the foreseeable future.

An Excellent Buy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have long been a fan of Toshiba laptops and this one definitely did not disappoint. I have several laptops, each used for a specific purpose - I am a bit of a technology addict! I did not want to carry around my primary laptop which has all of my personal, financial, tax related documents and programs. But, I wanted a Windows OS laptop so I could run the programs I typically use, easily connect to printers, etc., have decent speed, storage space, and screen resolution. All at a low price point. This laptop, for me, has hit all of these marks perfectly. The specs would not support hard core gaming and I'm not sure how well it would handle advanced video editing (I might give that a try just for fun), but for standard business/student/personal use on a tight budget, I would strongly recommend giving this laptop a try!! I am 100% satisfied with my purchase of this laptop.

Adequate basic laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this machine as a backup for work. It performs adequately. I do not advise using it as a Windows 8 machine; I installed Linux and it works fine. Two notable flaws are the keyboard, which often sticks while typing, and the memory is only about 3GB, not 4GB as advertised.

It's my second and what a value!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just bought my second one of the same as a backup laptop. What I like most is its display quality, specifically the contrast. Also its speed. No it's not as fast as an i7 or and AMD-10, but for daily tasks, browsing, spreadsheets, no notable difference in speed. As to bootup, it takes exactly 4 more seconds to boot up than a top of the line AMD-10 7300 series. I can live with that for $199. Finally, this laptop offers bluetooth 4.0 which is not available even on many more expensive laptops AND a DVD burner (optical drive). Not to mention USB 3.0. Best value in laptops!

Terrible laptop - wish I could return it!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I despise this laptop! I got my first laptop in 1999 and that one was faster than this P.O.S. The laptop is incredibly slow, freezes all the time, and sometimes -like right now- won't turn on for any specific reason. Sometimes it will freeze and the screen looks weird with Asian characters. I used to be on my laptop several hours a day and now barely turn it on once a week and for the shortest time possible since I get so frustrated. Despite having a disability that makes my fingers shake and go numb and make it hard to type on my smartphone, I do most of my work on the phone now rather than deal with this laptop. I wish I could return it. Worst laptop ever! UPDATE: I have sent the laptop back to Toshiba to be repaired TWICE now and it still does not work properly. The first time dealing with getting it sent it was a nightmare. I was on the phone for over an hour and the woman only kept repeating how the laptop would not turn on despite me telling her repeatedly that the laptop had never worked properly. We had to pay the shipping of the laptop to be repaired which I found outrageous as it was a defective laptop. The product was shipped back right away. It turned on but could not connect to the internet. Furious, I called them back and at least the person I spoke to that time was more helpful. She arranged for me to be able to ship it back free of charge as the problem had not been resolved (still, this means me having to take it to Fedex with an unhappy 4 year old in tow). They kept it longer this time and I had hope they would realize the laptop was completely defective and would replace it, as I see not everyone has the same problem. Alas, it was just returned. I clicked to open an internet browser and waited...and waited... and waited... My husband bought this for me as it was cheap after a friend broke my laptop and I can't put into words how incredibly disappointed I am in this laptop and in Toshiba. It is so slow and freezes so often it is just faster for me to use my phone. I wish I could get a refund because this laptop is not acceptable.

Posted .Thank you for the review, Nessie, and sorry to hear about the performance issues with your Satellite C55.
If you haven't tried yet, I recommend performing a Windows Reset to restore the laptop to its factory settings. Make sure all of your files are backed up since this will eliminate all software changes and additions since it left the factory. The Toshiba Forums community knowledgebase article at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 has detailed instructions.
If the issue persists after a Windows Reset, please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for further assistance.

Worst and SLOWEST Ever Owned
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computer is the WORST I have ever owned. And the SLOWEST ! Ive had more problems with this computer in the first year than any other in years combined. The mouse constantly freezes. Usually daily. Internet loading is slow even with a super fast speed.Other random programs freeze up and many times I end up using my 7- year old Sony VAIO because it is FASTER and more RELIABLE. Detest Windows 8 - but that is the least of its issues. The rough mousepad is hard on fingertips and they feel numb after even. This computer had a cracked screen almost a year into warranty and Toshiba gave me nothing but problems in replacing it. In fact they refused. I couldn't believe they would treat a customer this way. Wanted to charge me $219 to replace the screen for this $279 computer. I wasted shipping money sending it to their warranty department and the supervisors, and reps were horribly rude and nasty. This is the LAST Toshiba of ANY product I will ever own because of this experience. There are many better computers for same price that are faster and have better customer service departments. Pick something else, people. Trust me, move on, you don't want this one. Keep walking by....

Posted .Thank you for the review, kissables, and sorry to hear that you had some issues with your Satellite C55 and also sorry to hear about the subpar customer service experience.
While it's true that the Standard Warranty doesn't cover damage such as broken screens, we would never want a customer to feel that they had been treated rudely by any of our agents or staff. My apologies for that.
Getting to the issues you mentioned, it's worth noting that the touchpad can be toggled OFF & ON by pressing the F5 key. So if the F5 key is inadvertently pressed one might get the impression that the cursor is frozen. If that's the case, pressing the F5 key again would re-enable the touchpad.
The perceived speed & responsiveness of any PC will depend somewhat on the number of programs and processes currently running on the unit at any point in time, and their respective demands on various components, subsystems, and networking resources. Rebooting Windows and then checking performance after loading each individual app is one way to determine when the resource load begins to impact performance, and which apps most impact performance.
Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Powerful, amazing, and quick!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an amazing laptop for anyone, as long as you are fine with a non-gaming laptop. Overall: It has a beautiful design, it has 2 nice genuine Intel CPUs clocked at 2.16Ghz minimum with turbo-boost up to 2.56Ghz, good enough to get the job done! This laptop has full out Windows 8.1 accompanied with 4gb of RAM, unlike the HP Stream, which has 2gb.

Total Waste of Money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. All I wanted was a basic PC that I could use to surf the web and maintain my Quicken software. What I got was a PC that can barely do either. Poor wireless card; when running on battery, I have to be practically next to the modem/router to get an Internet signal (using FIOS 50/50 - great signal, lousy PC). Machine is constantly crashing and needing to reboot. I'd suggest spending an extra $100 or so to get a Pentium; the Celeron savings are not worth it. Don't buy this computer - you will be sorry. It is truly a waste of money.

Posted .Thank you for the review, toshibadowner14, and sorry to hear about the crashes and connectivity issue on your Satellite C55.
I recommend performing a Windows Reset to restore the laptop to its factory settings, since frequent crashing can indicate corruption of Windows itself. Please make sure to have all personal files backed up before doing the Windows Reset process. The Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 has detailed instructions.
After completing the Windows Reset, when installing software that was not included with the system, always create a restore point prior to each individual program's installation and work with the new program for awhile to be sure it hasn't compromised the system integrity before installing another program. For more info about creating restore points in Windows 8, please review this EightForums.com article: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4690-restore-point-create-windows-8-a.html
Also, I recommend using Windows Update only to install "important updates" (not "optional updates") to ensure that you're not inadvertently letting Windows replace a Toshiba-certified driver with software that may render the system less reliable. That said, I do recommend installing what Windows Update refers to as "important updates" and staying on top of those updates on a regular basis.
All of the advice generally applies to any PC running the Windows OS, and is particularly worth noting when setting up a new system. Of course, doing all of these things won't solve a hardware failure, if that's what you've experienced. Please contact customer support at 800-457-7777 if performing the Windows Reset doesn't resolve the crashing problem.
If the crashing issue is resolved but you're still not happy with the Wi-Fi performance, you may want to update or reinstall the Wi-Fi driver to see if that will resolve the networking performance. To do so visit support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200009386 and click the "Drivers and Updates" tab for a list of software available for your model, then filter that list using "Windows 8.1" and "Wi-Fi" to see relevant drivers and utilities.
Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Great easy PC for beginners
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a great value. I don't honestly know how people can hate it, other than purchasing the wrongly suited laptop for their needs. This is great for people that don't want a lot of bells and whistles. I already own a rather impressive desktop and didn't want to sink a ton of money into something fancy - so I tried this. It's perfect for what I want it for, which is Netflix, AIM, playing DVDs, music, writing, portable internet access around the house [recipes when I cook, mainly], and photo storage of what I cook for my website. It's perfect for all that. If you want something for graphic design or to game on, I'd honestly recommend one of Toshiba's other models. It is simple to use, and not overly complicated to get settings how you want them personalized, the keys are large and easy to read and the set up is walk-through easy. Because of that, I think it would be a great computer for young teen, or honestly, and older person who just wants a simple, easy to use laptop. I very happy with this laptop. 5/5 would purchase again from Toshiba.
