Slow
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Normally I read the negative reviews first, but because this wasn't 1 of the 3 we were intending to purchase so I only did a quick scan while in the store. Big mistake. This computer, purchased as a gift for my hubby who only surfs, emails and uses Facebook, ran slow immediately out of the box. After setting up the computer he upgraded to Windows 10, second mistake. It took just over 36 hrs for the upgrade process to complete which is utterly ridiculous. (This could also be as a result of the well documented loss of WiFi issue.) It seems there just isn't sufficient RAM for the upgrade because the computer runs so slow that it is annoying. He has yet to save anything to the hard drive and it is running slower than his 2007 Satellite running Vista. Once documents are transferred will this even be usable? (Ex. Opening an Edge web page from the bottom menu-9 seconds to open the page and another 3 before the cursor could be placed. Opening an email from the start menu- 10 seconds to open just the program.) Boot up is excessively long for a computer that doesn't have any personal data stored on it. For those who care the cheap feeling case is a fingerprint magnet. As a power user, I did not expect this to be a lightning fast computer, nor did I expect for it to hold a tremendous amount of data; I do, however believe that it should be quite capable for the light duty that he expects from it. It is not. I have never had to return a computer in the 30 yrs that I have owned PC/laptop/tablets, but this will be going back today, the 4th day of ownership.

Posted .Thank you for the review, Neetz, and sorry that you've been disappointed with the initial performance of your Satellite C55-B5101.
This model is equipped with an Intel Celeron processor and 4GB of RAM which, as you expected, would normally be considered to be fully capable of handling any typical day-to-day computing needs.
The Windows 10 download process is intended to run in the background so can take a considerable amount of time, no doubt due to some degree to a very heavy demand on the update CDN servers but also due to the intent to not allocate full system resources to the process so that it can be used for other things at the same time.
If the Windows 10 upgrade process is now completed, I wonder if Windows Update might be busy still downloading & installing updates for Windows 10. When all of the updating is complete (as it probably is by now if the system has been left on and connected to the Internet) then performance should be significantly better than when Windows was busy updating itself.
Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

If they allowed NO starts....that's what I'd pick
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is by far....and I'm talking at least 10 years..the WORST computer for anyone to buy. It's a pc of junk and for the money! You DO get what you pay for. I returned it the next day. Don't even bother to try and work with it. You can hit the bar on a button and it'll take at least a minute for the computer to even make a move. I hit the dang thing so many times and nothing. It's sloooooooooow. and the plays just online games even worse. The HP touch screen with Intel chip is by far much munch better....and worth the extra money. Wait for holiday sales and grab it...399

Posted .Thank you for the review, Lexus, and sorry that about the apparent performance issue with your Satellite C55 laptop.
I understand that you already returned the product but for the benefit of others who may experience a similar issue with brand new Windows PCs, Windows Update may have been busy downloading & preparing updates for installation. That's often the case on brand new systems, and if so it will tax initial performance for a period of time until Windows is finished updating itself. You may want to run the Windows Update app to see what it's up to. If it has critical updates to install, I recommend having it complete that process ASAP and reboot when it's finished (even if not required) to see if performance has improved once that process is completed.
I don't recommend letting Windows Update install any "optional" updates since those can overwrite drivers & utilities that are optimized for or by Toshiba. Optional updates should only be installed via the Toshiba Service Station app or by visiting support.toshiba.com.
Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Getting Better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Since my last review, the laptop has finally updated. I never choose "optional" updates unless they have something to do with what I use. It is however, aggravating to keep getting the ads popping up everywhere but hopefully if I say "no" enough they will stop. It's not a bad laptop. Just very frustrating for a few days because it was so slow. It is getting better and I do not regret the purchase.

A great purchase. Returned refurbed computer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. From the start I fell in love with Toshibas Satellite series. And the C55 really hit a grand slam. The keys type smooth. The back spaces and delete keys are hands down better than HP. I returned an HP from a competitor near Baltimore. This was the best move I ever made. I highly recommend the Toshiba Satellite C55 with Intel. You can't go wrong.

Posted .Thank you for the review, Rita, and sorry to hear that you're happy with the performance of your Satellite C55-B5101.
This model is equipped with Intel's Celeron N2840 Processor and 4GB of RAM, which would normally be considered to be fully capable of handling most typical day-to-day computing needs. They're not a powerful as Intel's Core series which are also available in other Toshiba models, such as the Core i5 and i7 processors.
The perceived speed & responsiveness of any PC will depend somewhat on the number of programs and processes currently running on the unit at any point in time, and their respective demands on various components, subsystems, and networking resources. Rebooting Windows and then checking performance after loading each individual app is one way to determine when the resource load begins to impact performance, and which apps most impact performance.
Intermittent Wi-Fi connections can sometimes be caused by driver compatibility. You may want to update or reinstall your Wi-Fi driver with the software available at support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200009386 -- Click "Drivers and Updates" and select the "Windows 8.1" and "Wi-Fi" filters to see the relevant drivers and utilities.
If problems persist after acting on the info above, I recommend performing a Windows Reset (restoring the laptop to its factory settings) which will eliminate any issues caused by software or configuration changes made after the laptop left the factory. Make sure all of your files were backed up since it will remove all data that has been saved on the primary storage.
Please review the knowledge base article and video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Video-How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-and-Recovery-options/ta-p/342690 for more Windows Reset details.

6 years after purchase still works
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Still works after 6 years. Seems that cortana slowed things up after a while. Proud to say this computer was a best buy at the time. Would recommend for those who just needed the basics for a bit.

$230 headache !!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My wife bought this laptop for me as a Christmas gift. Right out of the box it randomly: crashes, loses internet connection, refuses to update, & is slow as a dog! Because it was a gift I don't have the heart to tell her it's junk. 7 months later I can't take it anymore and in the trash it goes... literally not worth $39.99 brand new.

Posted .Thank you for the review, NunyaAt78, and sorry to hear that you've had issues with your Satellite C55 laptop.
Considering the multiple symptoms you mention, I recommend performing a Windows Reset to restore the laptop to its factory settings. If any of the issues you described are caused by configuration or software changes, that will resolve them. Be sure to first back up any personal files since this process will remove all data added after the factory software installation.
The knowledge base article and video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Video-How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-and-Recovery-options/ta-p/342690 has more how-to details.

From one tech to the next
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First bought this laptop and thought it was outfitted great ! The specs were pretty great and it was delivered super fast. I should have returned it. I exclusively used this for schoolwork and not too soon after trying to customize and change everything, this is legitimately the slowest working laptop I have ever used. Think of using windows 98 on the windows 8 interface. Which by the way, windows 8 is the worst interface windows has decided to share with the world. If you can figure out how to downgrade to windows 7 (it's a cheap enough laptop where you can pay someone 100$ to do it, I just sold mine it wasn't worth the trouble), it may be a laptop worth keeping. But personally between the hard drive running so slow and issues I had connecting to the internet I skipped it. Save yourself the frustration if you have serious work to do in it. If it's for something simple like browsing the net (which at that point buy yourself a netbook) don't bother.

Posted .Thank you for the review, Sanspatham, and sorry to hear that soon after customizing your Satellite C55-B5101 the performance degraded significantly.
That timing was probably not coincidental so I recommend doing a Windows Reset to restore the laptop to its factory settings to see if that eliminates the symptoms you're experiencing. The Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article at toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 has more details and step-by-step instructions for that process.
Once the Windows Reset process is completed and Windows Update has installed all pending Important updates, I recommend upgrading to Windows 10, which will feel more familiar to Windows 7 and is available as a free upgrade through the Windows Store.
Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.

WORST LAPTOP I'VE EVER OWNED
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I owned a Toshiba Satellite before this one and had no problems. So I ignored the reviews that stated that this laptop was VERY SLOW...I shouldn't have. It often states that it's not connected or has a limited connection to the internet when everything else in the home is working fine (Smart TVs, Tablets etc.). I have been frustrated with this laptop from the time I took it out the box a month ago...HORRIBLE!!!
