Great buy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love the 2 in 1 features and it runs great. I'm not a gamer or anything so I don't have a review for that. But netflix, hulu, Facebook, etc is great.

Great Machine, But Loaded with Bloat/Mal-Ware
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First Impression Review: I recently purchased this to replace an Acer W500, which I hated from day one. I chose Toshiba this time because I had a Satellite Pro ages ago that lasted nearly 10 years, so I’m hoping for the same level of durability. I did not need a high performance laptop, so 4GB RAM and an entry-level CPU was just fine. I primarily use my laptop for word processing/writing and editing text documents (along with responding to emails and general social media). I have a PC I use for video/audio work and graphic rendering. If you need to do heavy graphic work or audio/video work, this is not the laptop for you. Out of the box, I noticed that it is a very attractive laptop. The gold tone isn’t yellow-gold, but more of a white-gold touch, which I prefer, but may not be relevant to some. It feels durable and stable to the touch. The plastic of the keyboard and cover doesn’t feel cheap. The weight of the unit is great. It isn’t so light I’m afraid of it, and it isn’t so heavy I don’t want to hold it when in tablet mode. One big question I had prior to my purchase was whether I could have the unit in my lap and use it (this was not possible with the Acer I previously had due to bad balance of keyboard/tablet). You can sit the laptop in your lap with the Toshiba and it is still usable. As one reviewer noted, it can be rather difficult to open the laptop. The “clam shell” is tight and there isn’t a space to grab between the keyboard and monitor when trying to open it. You must slide your finger between the two units. I haven’t figured out how to do this with it sitting on a table. I have to pick it up so I can hold both sides and pull them apart. Set up was typical of Windows 10. The process wasn’t difficult and everything synced nicely once I signed into my Microsoft Account. However, I did have a problem with installing Office 365 (which came free for a year with this unit). The first several times I tried to do so, I received an error message that my product could not be activated. I gave up and tried again the next day and it worked just fine. This may have been an issue on Microsoft’s end, or perhaps it takes some time for the codes to register as purchased. Upon setup, the machine runs smoothly, transitioning from PC to Tablet mode with ease. It provides an option for you to be asked each time whether to switch modes, or to remember your preference. The screen was bright and the colors seemed fine for my use. I don’t think the colors are fantastic and they do seem a bit low-end compared to other monitors I’ve seen. I’m sure if you were watching HD movies and the like, the colors would be noticeably dull. The viewing angle is extremely limited, which I didn’t think would be an issue as I usually have it directly in front of me. However, as a tablet, you can’t sit it down on the desk/table and see the screen well (which I sometimes do with my tablets). Another negative about the screen is that it fingerprints extremely easily. I find myself constantly wiping off fingerprints. They are obvious and distracting to me. When holding it as a tablet, the keyboard being exposed gives me fits. You will be pressing keys no matter how you try to hold it as you’ll likely adjust your grip periodically. The pressing doesn’t have any effect on the machine, as in tablet mode the keyboard is disabled, but it’s not exactly comfortable and I worry about damaging the keyboard. The bloatware many reviewers have complained about is actually much worse than I had anticipated. There are links to many third-party vendors pinned to the start menu and numerous “trial” software programs installed. I spent a lot of time going through to delete these items, and I’m still hunting for things to remove and finding them. There are at least 8 programs that are “Toshiba” something programs. I’m working on determining which ones I can remove and not negatively impact the performance of the unit. Sadly, it’s not just bloatware, but Toshiba has actually put MALWARE into these beautiful units. There is an application installed called “App Explorer” by SweetLabs, which may be useful, but….. the program recently updated. When the update notice popped up, there as a check box marked I almost missed that changes your browser homepage to Web Search. The print is very small and I imagine many have missed this browser hijacking. This is unacceptable on the part of Toshiba. I’m extremely disappointed they would allow software on their new machines that attempts to highjack your browser experience. To me, that is MAL-ware, so the program is getting uninstalled and Toshiba should immediately stop this practice. There is a serious enough security risk with having your information on your computer, without potential hijacking of your browser by companies you would assume would have been better vetted by Toshiba before allowing the installation. To be honest, this issue alone has made me consider returning the machine, but I do like it and I don’t think I could find better for the price. I have some time to consider it still. I had no issues with WiFi connectivity as some reviewers have noted. The hinges also seem tight and durable, but I have only had the unit for two days. I’m keeping a close watch on them. Creation of a recovery disk required at least 16GB of media. I used a thumb drive rather than CDs/DVDs and it took about 30 minutes. Some reviewers have indicated this machine is slow. I don’t disagree when compared with other machines available. At boot, it seems to take exceptionally long – however, I also have to consider how much is connecting to different services over the internet during the boot. Removing these should be helpful in the start-up speed. I recommend creating your recovery drive after removing all of the crapware Toshiba has installed on this thing.

still playing with, but may return it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just need a simple laptop, something under $400, to present PowerPoint presentations and movies (in those presentations), and maybe for occasional other projects for my job. I was looking over a few laptops, but decided to get this one mostly because of its size and weight, and it was faster than one of the quad-cord laptops I was also looking at. Understand, I've only had it a few hours so far. Also, all I've installed onto it are Chrome and Dropbox. Pros: -I uninstalled the junk that comes on them all, and upon trying to install MS Security Essentials (free anti-virus program), I was told that it's not needed, since the defender program already on the device does the same thing. So that's cool. -Very light weight. -Small size, but not annoyingly-small. -Keyboard was a little stiff when I first started it up, but works better now. -Keyboard disengages when flipped into tablet mode -Faster than some of the AMD quad-core displays at the store, in terms of opening programs. -Compact -Touch Screen is user-friendly (recognizes my finger just fine). -5+ hours of battery time -Mostly charged upon opening the box -HDMI, USB 3, USB 2, earphone jack -Seems pretty sturdy. The guy at the store said that Toshiba's researched and tested this style of flipping the screen for some time and it's a common style. On the downside: -It's frozen a few times. -I think a program on here has crashed once, also (I just got this thing today!) -It seems to have a slight identity crisis. For instance, while in laptop mode, It works like a laptop, but also has apps like what you'd expect from a tablet. (but that may just be the Win. 10). -I'll tap an app/program, and it won't immediately open. Sometimes I need to tap it a couple times, others I need to hold down for it to register. -No CD drive, no VGA port -Again, I'm not sure if it's Win 10 or the device itself, but the way things work takes some getting used to (for instance, emptying the recycle bin has some new options). -Yep, just as I'm typing this on my other computer, I tried to move the cursor on the new device and neither the cursor nor anything else on the screen will move. -It's a little awkward when in tablet mode (I'm used to using an iPad, so I may be comparing the experiences) -I don't know what I did, but for some reason, I was able to scroll up & down with the touchpad earlier, and suddenly now I can't. So it's a little disappointing, as it's only my first day (couple of hours, actually) that I've had it and even before I've had the chance to use it for the reason that I bought it, it's already not performing at its expected potential. I'll tinker with it a little more tonight, but I may return it tomorrow. I'll update this if I don't.

Has been a horrible purchase(s)
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First one I bought failed to charge after three days. Meanwhile, it was slow in operation compared to my four yr old Satellite that I broke the screen of. BB exchanged the new one for another brand new one. Slow, gets 'stuck', freezes (while other wifi devices in the same room rock n roll on same network). And lastly, if I don't sit in the same room of my house as my wifi router, this laptop doesn't gain enough wifi signal to load a page. All other wifi devices in my home work throughout the house.
