This dumbbell is great, is heavy-duty, functional, and with an excellent grip. I prefer these rubber coated over vinyl since it is a lot softer on surfaces. There is enough space to grip and not all uncomfortable. The gripping bar is 5 inches long, and the entire dumbbell length is 12 inches. I like hex shade over plate dumbbells because they don’t roll around on the floor. It does have some smell, which is familiar with this type of rubber, but that goes away within a few days. Overall, I am delighted with the high quality, looks and feels great. I like them so much that I will get more with different lbs to improve my workout routine.

I read a lot of reviews before taking the risk and buying this. The big question from the reviews is, does it smell so bad that it is not usable? Here is the answer. The dumbells are well packaged in plastic. Yes they smell a little like new tires at the beginning. But the smell dissipates after a few days. I took the plastic off and they don't smell any more. Yes, obviously if you put your nose on top of it, you can smell the rubber. But it's nothing at all like room filling odor. You cannot smell it at all in the room where the dumbells are sitting. And these are high quality, well made dumbbells. I highly recommend them.

Good value. Gets the job done. No rubber odor. Grip can be a bit rough, but throwing on a pair of gloves works well.

Nothing too crazy about this product. It's a dumbbell. It is overpriced compared to Target (cough price match) However, shipping this thing was a challenge. On one instant, the item broke out of it's packaging in shipping and was entirely lost, and the other time also broke out of packaging but was only delayed by one day. Also some people complain about a strong odor, but it's nothing you wouldn't expect from a rubber coated dumbbell.

This is a convenient little hand weight to have around to do some arm exercises at your desk or around the house, but it does have a strong, kind of smokey smell. The smell may be due to the rubber coating, so we might return this one and try the other "Elite" version that doesn't say it is out of stock. Hopefully that one won't have any odor.

Great for home workouts. It has a strong rubber smell when it came, but the smell goes away if you leave it by the window for a few days.

These dumbbells are really well constructed. The hexagon shape doesn't roll around on the floor, the rubberized ends don't scuff up the floor or generate a ton of noise when setting them down, and there are no moving parts jostling around as you life and lower the weight. In short, these are excellent weights. The only complaint I have is that they stank something awful when I first unboxed them. It was a very strong, chemical odor. It took a good four days for the odor to fade. Aside from that though, these have been terrific.

It's hard to think of things to say about a device whose only real requirement is to be both heavy and symmetrical, so I'll be brief: these are very good dumbbells. The knurled grips provide plenty of purchase for potentially sweaty hands without being obnoxious. The rubber coating does an admirable job of preventing them from creating too much noise when you set them down on the floor. And they did an admirable job of surviving what looks to have been a tremendously challenging trip through the postal service which left the box they arrived in all but destroyed, so I'm sure they'll be able to stand up to anything they might get being stored underneath a desk or in a home gym. There is a bit of a strong chemical smell produced by the rubber that I noticed right out of the box, but it grew fainter with some time. All in all it's a great set of gear to have on hand for a quick workout!

Like many others out there, I've been struggling to build an at-home gym to substitute for the actual gym. I've been having a hard time finding available and affordable dumbbells until I came across these. I got the 20lb set and I'm very impressed by them! The hex shape helps them not roll away as I'm quickly switching between exercises and I don't feel like I slam them on my floor because of their rubber coating. I can't believe the quality of them for the price. Very reasonable. I think they'll hold up well through prolonged use. My only complaint is the odor that they gave off when I took them out of the box. It's a very strong new rubber smell. It's gone away mostly, but I still catch a wiff of it when I'm using them.

Rubber coating smells hard, I can feel the smell while using these for a short 5 minutes work out.

The Tru Grit 20-LB Hex dumbbell is a great dumbbell and comes at a perfect time when I try to stay at home as much as possible these days. It fits well in my hand and the grip on the handle is just right. I love the hex shape and it keeps the dumbbell right where I put it down. I only have one right now, but I plan on getting another 20-lb to even things out and a couple of 10-lb versions for my wife to use. The rubber does have a funny smell though, but I hope it will go away with time.
