The Turtle Beach Recon Controller is a great customizable controller for gaming on Windows 10 PCs. It has noticeably better ergonomics than the default controller that comes packaged with Xboxes and is also durable. In particular, the rubber grips on the controller are very comfortable and the whole shell of the controller seems to be scratch and oil resistant. It requires no extra software downloads on Windows 10 to plug-and-play, and it also comes with the unique feature of being able to map button layouts between 2 profiles. However, the actual process for changing the button mapping can be confusing and requires the instruction manual that came packaged with the controller to understand how to do it. You are also able to plug in a headset directly into the controller and get crisp sound quality. There are 4 different modes to cycle through on the controller to adjust headset volume levels, different forms of sound boosting, and joystick aiming sensitivity. These settings are more straightforward to cycle through than the button mapping assignments, though the default settings will likely fit most gaming needs.

Good Reliable controller for your money

got this controller for $30 buck on sale. Ive had this controller for 3 days and its done only good for me. The extra features on top definitely has some good use for your xbox like the mute button and volume buttons. The grips on the bumpers and triggers are a bit too “grippy” and if you play with claw grip, its kinda rough on your fingers. Also, the bumpers and triggers feel like you have to use more force than usual to push them which is why i give this controller 4 stars

Gaming is a way of life, a hobby, or a means of escape for a lot of us. Whether you’re playing for 30-minute increments or playing for several hours, it’s important to have the proper tools to extend your gaming enjoyment. Let me state that this is a WIRED controller. I announce this because sometimes buyers might be looking for a pure wireless experience. Design: The Turtle Beach Recon is lightweight. It’s not exhausting to hold or grip for long periods. The cushioned grips allow airflow, preventing your hands from getting sweaty during any period of a gaming session. While the face buttons are not mechanical, they are solidly responsive. There’s no need to press hard to make sure that button action has connected upon pressing. The triggers and the bumpers have a raised, tactile grip design along with the rear action buttons. Fingers won’t be slipping off, costing the player precious reaction time. Speaking of reaction time, the triggers are smooth are react accordingly. I didn’t have to compensate for ‘dead zone’ trigger areas that you might find with 3rd party controllers. When it comes to the analog sticks, I had no issue with frustrating dead zones. The crosshairs always landed on where I pointed the sticks towards. Interface & Sound: The Recon interface is really easy once you’ve quickly read the included instructions. Cycling through the controller features is a breeze. The button remapping is another welcomed and easy feature for the Recon. When it comes to First Person Shooters, I need to have the crouch button easily accessible for those drop shots but that usually requires me to lift my finger off the analog stick to press the button. With remapping, I can still have my thumb on the stick and pull off a drop shot because I reassigned the B button to the rear button. This will prove to be useful for all sorts of players. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the sound options that Turtle Beach is known for, then you are in for an audio treat. Mic monitoring is a must for any gamer. Whether you’re chatting in an online squad or recording gameplay commentary, you mustn’t be talking LOUD all because you cannot hear yourself. Having the mic monitoring built into the Recon controller allows you to use any headset (with a 3.5mm jack) with the Recon controller. What’s better is that if you already own a Turtle Beach headset that uses a Super Amp controller dial, you can bypass that and simply plug your headset into the Recon and still enjoy the great sound features. No multiple wires are getting in the way. One headset plugs into the controller. Simple. I mentioned the Mic monitoring but I need to mention the sound options that the Recon controller offers. The Recon offers the audio benefits that Turtle Beach has renowned for. The notched bar displays the choices for the player: Mic Monitoring, EQ Setting, Feature Level, Button Mapping, Mic Mute, and Superhuman Hearing. The EQ setting offers four different sound options for the player: Signature Sound, Bass Boost, Bass and Treble Boost, and Vocal Boost. Select the sound option that is best suited for the kind of game you enjoy. I prefer the bass and treble boost for the ‘action movie’ sound experience. You can change the EQ settings easily while playing so if you went from playing Halo and switch to Warzone and want to listen for opposing player’s footsteps then you can change the EQ setting. Select what your playstyle is. The Pro Aim Focus Mode is a feature that I haven’t seen offered before in a controller right out of the box. I have seen a similar feature offered with more expensive ‘pro’ controllers that required me to plug the controller into a PC and calibrate that feature. The Recon controller simply had me holding down on the rear action button to activate the Pro Aim Focus. Some might wonder what benefit does the Pro Aim Focus offer? Well, let’s say you’re playing Apex Legends or Call of Duty and you see an upcoming opportunity for a sweet sniper shot but you need to ‘slow’ down your otherwise high sensitivity analog stick settings. The Pro Aim allots you that moment to calibrate your shot and connect it. The Pro Aim feature sets will vary from player to player. Once you read the instructions, accessing the options will be second nature. I should also mention that the Recon controller can be plugged into your PC if desired. The controller is ready to go without needing to download any software or configuring app. Game On: I am pretty impressed with the Recon controller considering this is Turtle Beach’s first foray into the controller market. I have a feeling that the Recon will be the first of many great controllers we can expect in the future. If you’re looking to buy an affordable controller for yourself or someone you know and are wanting to have the audio benefits that Turtle Beach is known for, then I believe that you will be very pleased with the Recon controller.

Bought the controller for a Windows 8.1 PC (I refuse to 'upgrade' to 10 or 11) and can't find drivers for it. It is STRICTLY for Xbox One(X) and a PC running Windows 10. Nice job of hamfisting upgrades and required consoles to use a WIRED controller. Returning and getting a 360 controller that works fine.

The Turtle Beach Recon controller caught my eye mostly for the chat buttons up on top. It's nice having these easily accessible rather than having to jump into any menus on the Xbox itself. The controller itself was feels a little less chuncky on the grips, compared to the official controller, however they have a wonderful grip with it's ergonomic cooling, I was questioning how they would feel but after hours of gameplay between battle royale, action/adventure and other games my palms didn't get sweaty and I've noticed that in the past when using other controllers. Through the long sessions I didn't feel any soreness in my hands, I don't know if they truly are, but they fill ever so slightly thinner and thinking I would be gripping them a little tighter may have been an issue. This wasn't the case, the grip was really comfortable and I like how the programmable rear buttons sat directly under my finger. The triggers, bumpers and rear buttons all head a texture to it, they feel like a sturdy plastic, I found this nice for the rear quick action buttons since you can easily find them. The face buttons all felt responsive, I never really had an issue with one getting sticking or not responding. Sticks were great, didn't have any sort of drifting. D-Pad I didn't use much, but any time I needed to swing anything I was hitting the intended direction without error even with it being a circular D-pad. The mic communication buttons are well placed up top on the controller, the volume and chat buttons are easy to reach, as they are closest to where your thumbs rest, the others I look at since the lights indicate your selection but you really only need to select your preset and not think about it again unless you want to change. The Audio has several presets depending on where you want the audio to focus, I typically had the superhuman hearing off, it did make things louder, however it also made me feel like things where closer than they actually are, which can help you react before hand, but made it feel like I was getting flanked in the middle of another firefight. I felt the standard audio while changing the EQ was best personally, but may differ for others. The programmable quick action buttons are pretty awesome, you can configure multiple presets depending on what you're playing, A and B was a preferred for me since I can crouch or jump easily without having to take my hands off the thumbsticks. I did play with the Pro-Aim focus and I did notice a difference in feel when aiming down sight, it's a little hard for me to pinpoint what but I did leave this setting on for sometime. I did however find if you have the Pro-Aim on highest setting and hold the quick-action button behind your right thumb stick it did significantly slow down my turning speed. I had it set to my crouch, so I would hold the button to slide and try to turn around but I would turn very very slowly. I switched crouch to the button behind my left hand and this wasn't an issue anymore, plus you do not run into the same thing when using the face buttons, so something with the quick action back right. Other than that the only thing that was off to me was the position of the change view and menu button, have to reach a little lower with my thumb than I am used to so I would look down for that, but would get used to that over time. Overall the build is great, sturdy controller and braided wire, I'm happy! Definitely going to use this for any controller based PC games while using it for the Series X when my batteries arent' charged. The controller being updated to include the share button is a nice touch! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wired controller, the audio controls alone through this in front of any other wired controller for me since you get that quick volume adjustment without having to pop in a menu or purchase a stereo adapter for the controller!

It's a pretty good controller, it's light weight so be careful not to drop it, I dropped it too many times while watching YouTube and I ended up getting stick drift. The media controls on the controller work pretty well, the triggers are pretty stiff and it really depends on what type of playstyle I'm playing, the analog sticks are pretty clicky so I know when I'm pressing down the analog stick. Overall a pretty good controller, only downside for me is the stick drift so don't drop your controller.

    Love The Audio Enhancement Options!

Right out of the box, the Turtle Beach Recon looks very cool. The included fabric-covered USB C cable is a flexible material and easily straightens out to its 10’ length. It appears to be of excellent quality. The audio controls across the top are logically placed. While it takes a little getting used to, the layout is easy enough to learn. The excellent audio enhancements (Super-Human hearing and EQ settings) are the main selling points for the Turtle Beach Recon and might be enough of a plus to make this controller my daily driver; time will tell. I really appreciate the LED indicators at the top of the controller. With practice, the diamond pattern makes it easy to tell at a glance which audio/EQ mode is selected. The separate toggles for game and chat volume are within easy reach on the face of the controller, and I quickly came to appreciate the convenience of controller-based volume control. Much easier than in-game menu settings or fishing for a slider/dial on a headset cord or earcup. The Xbox, View, Menu, and Share buttons have been pushed down more toward the center of the controller face and accessing them isn’t as intuitive as a standard controller. I blame muscle memory more than anything. The controller is lighter (maybe because there are no onboard batteries?) and feels slightly smaller than the stock controller. It is very comfortable in the hands. The joysticks are accurate and have no drift. The position of the sticks, D-pad, and ABXY layout is immediately familiar to anyone who has previously used an Xbox controller. The texture and material of the grips is great, and I had no problems with my hands getting too warm or sweat causing grip issues, even in extended sessions. There are perfectly placed mappable rear buttons on the left and right. They are easily programmed to duplicate any of the standard controller buttons, and I giggled like a maniac the first few times I got to instantly melee an opponent without moving a thumb. It’s fun stuff! I’m not loving the D-pad shape. I find myself having to take an extra beat to be sure my thumb is placed correctly. There’s that muscle memory again! By far, my biggest issue is the shoulder buttons. They are closely contoured to the controller body, and I have a tough time getting reliable button pushes. For me, it’s pretty frustrating. The audio enhancements and mappable rear buttons are enough a plus that I will keep trying.

The controller is really nice. The controller is comfortable and has cool features. My favorite feature is the enhanced audio. The enhanced audio make your gameplay louder but specificly for better hearing. The triggers are nice a little stiff for my liking but still pretty nice.

Third-party controllers always felt... wrong. Either the grip was too different, the buttons were not the right shape, or they were just cheap and flimsy. Growing up, I and most of my friends had the ol' Player 2 controller on standby in case a buddy came over to play, and it was almost always a garbage third-party controller. Turtle Beach's Recon wired controller has shattered all perceptions I once held of non-first party controllers being lesser. The shape of the controller seems identical to the hand, but the feel of it compared to the one that came packaged in with my XBOX One X is much improved. The soft, grippy rubber around the palm rest have tiny microgrooves that improve air circulation to cool down hot hands. The button and trigger placement for the main buttons is the same, though the sticks have texturized edges to keep thumbs from slipping off. There are additional paddle buttons in the back that are programmable. The rumble is nice and strong, without being too aggressive. This is a wired controller, but the wire itself is detachable, which is a great idea if you're the type to store your controllers on the wall. It's also convenient since the cord is so long that doing the ol' wrap the cord around the controller bit would be unsightly. The sound quality when plugging in my headphones into the Turtle Beach controller is so much better than plugging into my stock controller, and not just due to wired vs bluetooth, as there is some additional processing going on. Different audio profiles are selectable, boosting the directionality of the sound for FPS's for that extra spatial awareness Buttons to control the overall volume and a separate set to control the chat volume are easily accessible, even if I do accidentally lower the volume every time I try to pause the game. Plugging the controller into my PC, Steam recognizes it as an XBOX Controller, which means pretty much every game from all the other stores do too. Maybe we'll get Steam Input API support in the future. The PC also recognizes the controller as an audio output device, so the same audio functionality applies here too. All in all, the Turtle Beach Recon controller is a worthy addition to my collection. The wired nature means I don't have to keep pairing the controller back and forth between my XBOX and my PC, and also saves money on batteries (or making sure there's always a freshly charged set). The feel of the original controller is maintained, with a few upgrades for comfort. I just have to learn to stop hitting the volume down button instead of what is now called the "view" button (it'll always be "select" to me). It's not even that the button is in a different place, my thumb would always just press whatever button is closest off the stick.

This Turtle Beach wired Recon controller is a difference maker when it comes to gaming. I own an Xbox, but maybe because I am older, I prefer to play most of my games on a PC, so that it was what I have primarily used this controller on. The only drawback to using this controller on a PC is that you can't utilize the chat mix feature, but it works perfectly fine on the Xbox. When you pull it out of the box, you will immediately feel how sturdy and well put together this controller is, so you know that you aren't getting some cheap knockoff. At the same time it isn't this heavy paperweight. Once it is out of the box, all you have to do is plug and get to gaming. A nice feature of this type of controller is that you don't have to worry about keeping it charged, since it is wired. As soon as you get a new controller, you always spend time getting adjusted for the feel of the controller. When you do that with this Recon controller, you immediately notice the cooling grips make this controller feel really comfortable in your hands. What really sets this Turtle Beach Recon controller apart is the Pro-aim focus feature and the superhuman hearing. The Pro-aim focus feaure is one of the two mappable buttons. This feature will give you an advantage with long-range accuracy. The other difference maker is the Superhuman hearing feature. This feature will give you an audio advantage when it comes to hearing quiet footsteps and even when an opponent reloads their weapon. Overall, you can't go wrong with going with this Turtle Beach wired Recon controller. If you are looking to purchase a new controller that will make a difference in your gaming I highly recommend this one.

First off, if you game on Xbox and PC, this controller is for you. Flawlessly connects to both with only one (minor) issue. That issue is the chat mix feature doesn't work for both setups. Not a big deal is you're only gaming on Xbox. Not enough of an issue to prevent me from using this controller on PC. It is a little larger than a standard Xbox controller, so if you have small hands, that may affect long gaming sessions. The grips are nice, and kept my hands resonable cool during gaming sessions. Response time, control functions are as expected. Button clicks are tactile, precise and satisfying. No controller drift as of yet. Seems to be sturdy built, so should last a long time. The eq presets are ok. Super-human hearing mode was neat to try, but I probably wont use it. For me, it makes the sound more "tunnel-y" and was weird to get used to. The mappable buttons are a great addition for customizing your controller. The pro-aim feature takes some getting used to. I like it, but it almost feels like cheating. The one real gripe I have, hence the title of the review, is that it's wired and only comes with a 10foot cord. I've had to change how/where I sit in order for it to reach my xbox. No issues on PC as I sit much closer to my PC. All in all, I would recommend this as a replacement controller. It would do well for competitive and casual gamers alike.

I got this mainly to use as a spare when I have a guest playing but it actually took over as my main controller for the time being. Sure, it’s not wireless but the 10 foot cord is plenty long for where I’ll be using it. This is a very comfortable controller with some really cool Turtle Beach bells and whistles. I love the illuminated controls right on the controller. It sure beats having to reach down a wire in the dark or try to remember which button is which on the headphones themselves. The EQ works great and helped me dial in my audio perfectly. Work’s perfect on my PC. Actually using it for Microsoft Flight sim and it controls everything just fine. I’m not a die hard flight sim guy so as long as I can fly around with this, I don’t really need anything more substantial. It’s hard to believe this is only 60 bucks. It just feels more expensive than that. This will be getting a lot of use when I start spending more time indoors after the summer. Great job Turtle Beach!!
