Customers are saying

Customers frequently mention the high-quality build, ease of use, and satisfying feel of the Recon controller, particularly praising its remappable buttons and comfortable grip. However, some users reported issues with stick drift and occasional connection problems, especially when used with PCs. A few also noted that the controller is wired and that some users found the bumpers and triggers to be less responsive than expected. Overall, the positive feedback on the controller's design and features outweighs the negative comments regarding functionality.

Excellent wired controller for PC gamers

The Turtle Beach Recon wired controller works great for PC gaming. It’s about the same size as the Xbox series X and 360 controllers, with a similar shape and ergonomics, but a few features that help it stand out. It comes with a braided 10’ USB-C cable, and because it’s wired there’s no lag or battery life to worry about throwing your game off. It’s also completely plug and play for Windows 10 (I’m fully updated), with no drivers or anything else to install. I just plugged it in and everything was working within seconds, no firmware update or anything needed. In some ways, I like it better than the series X controller, because the Recon has 2 mappable rear buttons, the D pad feels precise without being too clicky (if that makes sense), I can save up to 4 different setup profiles, and there’s audio and chat control buttons right in front of me. In terms of game response and comfort, all the buttons and triggers feel solid and don’t miss a beat. Grip seems to be a big design priority. The texture around the joysticks catch my thumbs well and give a great sense of where they’re pointing. Playing high paced games like Doom Eternal and Forza 7, my thumbs never slipped and they were a real confidence builder keeping my car steady around some of the long, fast bends in Forza. The shoulder, trigger, and rear buttons are also nicely textured, and while I don’t suffer from sweaty hands, the “cooling grips” on the handles felt great in my hands without being too padded or sticky. Coming from mainly using a DS4 controller, I experienced “impulse triggers” for the first time and totally love them. Playing Forza 7, the trigger vibrations when braking were a lovely, immersive feature, and I think even helped improve game play, because it gave a sense of feedback about my brakes and when my traction was about to slip. What helps the Recon controller stand out are the 2 mappable rear buttons, 4 profile modes, 4 audio EQ presets, a “Superhuman Hearing” mode, and a Pro-Aim Focus mode. Programming everything is done right on the controller, with no extra apps to download and configure, so you can quickly change things up on the fly. The EQ modes were ok, but I liked the Superhuman Hearing mode best and stuck to that. It’s supposed to help you hear footsteps and reloads, but it also sounded the cleanest to me. The Pro-Aim Focus sounds neat, but I honestly haven’t tried it yet. From the sound of it, it has a similar effect to a high DPI mouse when playing shooters. It decreases the sensitivity of the joystick so you aim with more precision and ease while being zoomed in. This is mapped to one of the rear buttons when the mode is active, making it practical to use and deadly in tournament play if you like sniping. If there’s anything I’m disappointed with, I was hoping the 2 mappable rear buttons could handle macro functions, but that’s not the case. Not a killer for me, but something to keep in mind. If you’re looking for a solid PC game controller, or need one for your Xbox, the Turtle Beach Recon controller is an excellent one to check out. It’s comfortable, responsive, accurate, and offers a few custom options right at your fingertips. PROS - Joystick textured grip work well - Handle cushioning grips - About same size as Xbox series X and 360 controller - True plug and play with Windows 10 - Headphone audio and mic control buttons right on controller - Superhuman Hearing mode works great - Pro-Aim Focus mode is kind of like using a high dpi mouse to aim - Responsive buttons and triggers - Two programmable back buttons - Relatively light - Good fit and finish - 3.5mm headphone jack CONS - Wired - Cannot program macro functions - No fancy gaming lights

Enhanced audio and aim, at an affordable price

The Turtle Beach Recon controller for Xbox is a step in right direction for third party Xbox controllers. It’s compatible with the Xbox One, Series X/S and PC. Because it’s designed primarily with the Xbox in mind, the chat mix doesn’t work on PC, but all other functions are compatible. So what’s different about this controller? The best features are the enhanced audio settings and the Pro-Aim focus mode. The audio presets offer four different EQ enhancements, boosting bass and treble frequencies. I preferred the first setting, which is their signature setting. You can also turn this off. In addition, there’s a Superhuman Hearing mode, that’s basically a mid-range boost, so that you hear enemy footsteps and weapon reloads better. It sounds a little boxy, so I prefer using the EQ boost. I can see myself using it in a competitive game mode, when I’m the only one left on my team and I need to hear everything. The nice thing is that it’s just a click away. Another neat feature is the mic monitoring. I’ve always had this complaint about the regular controller, including the Elite controller. Not being able to hear myself talk makes me want to speak louder, so hearing my voice back in the headphones is wonderful. There are four volume levels, in addition to turning it off. The controller has two mappable quick-action buttons. I typically map these to A and B, and that works nicely and it’s easy to change to any button you want. This controller also has the Pro-Aim focus mode. This is a new feature for me and I actually like it a lot. Simply explained, it slows down the aim dramatically when you push the right mappable button. It’s best to reset the button when using this feature, but you can use both at the same time if you’d like. There are four levels, but level 1 already makes a big difference. 3 and 4 practically locks the aim in place, but I’m using a medium/high setting, so you might find these useful, if you use really high aim settings. The controller feels comfortable in my hands. The textured surfaces feel nice, although it’s an adjustment for me, since I’m used to the smooth surfaces of the first Elite controller. It’s more noticeable on the triggers, because I’m constantly pushing them in. I might prefer less texture there, because they feel just a tiny bit rough on my finger tips. This controller requires a cable. It’s 10 feet long, so hopefully that’s enough for most people. My Xbox is pretty close to my chair, so the length is perfect. I use a cable anyway, so it doesn’t change anything for me. I’ve used this on my Xbox One X and Windows 10 PC without any problems. I don’t have an Xbox Series X yet, but I will certainly use this controller when I get it, because it is fully compatible with it. If you’re looking for better audio and more accurate aim for the same price as a regular controller, the Turtle Beach Recon controller is the one for you!

SO GOOD - Turtle Beach came out swinging!

The Recon Controller from Turtle Beach should be on your short list if the features are right. I’ll keep this review short but for $60 there are some amazing features worth mentioning. FEATURES – 10’ USB-C detachable cable is included, but not proprietary. If your cable ever fails you can use any USB-C cable you want. The included one is braided and feels of very high quality. You also get two mappable buttons on the back that are easier to use and more durable feeling than the paddles you typically get with other controllers. I wish there were four buttons, but for $60, this isn’t too bad. You also get a precision aim mode, which when activated, allows you to reduce the sensitivity of your right thumbs stick to make sniping and long shots easier. This is activated by enable precision mode, then holding the right rear button down while you aim. It’s adjustable to four levels of sensitivity. AUDIO – One of the biggest selling points of this controller is the audio experience you get with a wired headset. The basics are this – this controller gives you 4 EQ presets, Super Human Hearing, Game volume, Chat volume, mic side tone (mic monitoring/hear your own voice), and mute. This works on ANY headset with a 3.5mm headphone cable which is huge. Getting this level of audio control on a high-quality wired headset is massive, and gives you a real benefit to any gaming experience. The EQs are not customizable but out of the box are great. Signature sound (preset 1) gives you very nice clarity without killing your bass. Then you have a bass boost, bass and treble boost, and vocal boost. Depending on the sonic signature if your headset, one will likely sound better than the others. I was surprised how good Super Human Hearing mode was, and it worked wonders on my Recon 500 headset which is a match made in heaven. AUDIO 2 - If you use this controller with an Antlion Y-Splitter and Antlion ModMic Uni, you can use any audiophile headphone you want. Whether it's a $3500 Hifiman HE1000se or an $80 Recon 500, the audio possibilities are truly endless with this controller. PERFORMANCE – The stick accuracy on this controller is incredible. I have about 8 different controller models and this was the second-best performing thumb stick pair regardless of price. No stick drift, a nice tight dead zone, and a great balance of stiffness. I came to this conclusion from game play and actual measurements of X & Y axis to back up what I felt. The only controller with better thumb sticks was the PowerA Fusion Pro controller which has four paddles @ $100 but lacks all audio controls. I felt immediately competitive in FPS games. Button presses feel great, and the triggers/bumpers were very reliable and consistent. INTERESTING TID-BITS – The thumb sticks work perfectly with KontrolFreak Thumbstick add-ons. So if you like a taller stick like I do, they snap on with no issues. Unfortunately, there are no trigger locks on this controller. This isn’t a deal breaker at $60, but honestly, it’s rarely implemented correctly anyway. The Elite 2 is the only one that does it correctly will output 100% trigger pull with the lock on. PowerA controllers have physical trigger locks which is fine for shooting but not for games like Warzone because the trigger output is capped at 33%. That means no driving cars with trigger locks on unless you have an Elite 2 controller. I have yet to test a Razer controller for this, but have tried many others. FINAL THOUGHTS – At $60 this is a no brainer controller. If you don’t need a wireless controller this is definitely better than the Xbox Series controllers that came out recently. It’s lighter, performs better, and gives you so many more options to work with it’s great. It also works with Windows 10 with no drivers needed. To me unless you need the features of the Elite 2, or need four rear buttons/paddles, this is an amazing option from Turtle Beach and I can’t recommend it enough.

I’m using this Recon controller with a matching Turtle Beach Recon headset connected via the 3.5mm plug. Although I’m using the Recon headset, the controller works with any compatible 3.5mm headset. Sound is excellent coming through the controller to the headset and sounds just as good as if the headset were connected directly to the console or PC. The controller can adjust headset volume, mic level and also has EQ and Superhuman hearing features which significantly enhance sound quality when active. The Superhuman hearing amplifies overall sound while placing a heavier emphasis on ambient sounds. The EQ works with presets and offers four sound profiles that place emphasis on bass boost, bass and treble boost, vocal boost and signature sound. The others are self-explanatory but signature sound is more neutral and evenly balanced all around. It’s similar to an EQ with everything zeroed. The mic level controls how loud the mic projects the speaker’s voice. Gaming and music both sound terrific and it is nice to have volume and mic controls with visual indicators conveniently available right on the handset. The controller looks and functions almost identically to an Xbox controller. Aside from a few minor visual differences, the only significant functional differences are the addition of the sound features, button mapping options and two additional “quick action” buttons on the bottom of the remote. The quick action buttons are mappable and although they may be useful to some users, I personally find them annoying. I have no use for the buttons but constantly find myself accidentally hitting them due to their location and the way I grip the controller. They aren’t currently mapped on this controller, so they’re not functional at the moment and don’t affect gaming but it’s still annoying because they are practically unavoidable. Quick action button issues aside, the controller has a comfortable ergonomic feel similar to the Xbox controller. The grips, triggers and buttons are a little more textured than the Xbox controller which makes them easier to identify during intense gaming. The buttons and analog sticks have good accuracy and responsiveness. The sensitivity of the right stick can be tweaked through the Pro-Aim Focus feature. The controller rumble/vibration also works well when activated. The only thing that some may consider a con with this controller is that there is no wireless version available at the moment. With the controller wired to the console or PC and the headset wired to the controller, it can get somewhat cumbersome having two cables heading in opposite directions. Thankfully, the cables for both the Recon controller and headphones are lengthy and constructed of durable, tear resistant braided fabric. The detachable USB-C to USB-A controller cable is ten-feet long, which should be adequate length for most stationary usage scenarios. A wired controller may sacrifice some freedom but this particular controller offers added convenience in return. It facilitates headset sound control, mic gain control and on-the-fly button mapping all through the controller rather than being forced to use separate software and hardware for these tasks.

Turtle Beach's Recon controller really is a all in one gaming controller that should fit just about everyone's needs perfectly. What makes the controller so nice is the fact that you have access to all control necessary for gaming all within fingers reach. The fact that this is a Xbox controller means it fits perfectly for console and PC gaming. Out of the box its pretty basic, you get the controller and usb-c cable to run the controller. Keep in mind this is a wired controller and is not wireless at least as of writing this review. The controller is well designed fitting comfortably in hand with side cooling grips which act to keep your hands free from sweat while the ridges add for extra grip. The backside of the controller offers two additional paddles which can be used to map your other buttons for quick access. While the front of the controller houses your standard Xbox set up with your X,Y,B,A buttons Turtle beach took it a step further by implementing a volume/chat button, super hearing button, mic mute button, equalizer button and mode select button. One thing to keep in mind is the equalizer is pre-set to four different settings and can not be adjusted, at least not that i could find that is. On the bottom of the controller you will find your 3.5 mm jack which serves as your access port for your audio/chat headset. Once a headset is connected you can then adjust volume and chat controls all via your controller. The volume button will raise or lower in game audio while the chat button will allow you to raise and lower your chat audio allowing you to find that perfect balance between the two. The super hearing button is perfect for those of you in to competitive gaming such as COD, battle royales or other such games. Once activated the audio will change allowing more emphasis on your mids and highs which makes footsteps more distinct. Believe me when i say it is definitely easier to pick up on foot steps or engine noises allowing you to not only tell when someone is coming but also pick up on the direction and distance on which they are closing in on you. The mode button allows you to switch between four different pre set profiles which all change your audio, equalizer and aim settings. Speaking of aim modes Turtle beach implemented a feature called Pro Aim Focus mode. When activated the little crosshair icon will light up on the controller letting you know that pro aim is on. What this does is adjust the sensitivity level on the right joystick based on your play or shooting style. Profile 1 will set the stick to the lowest settings allowing snipers to get a more precise shot while profile 4 will max out your sensitivity allowing run and gunners to get the advantage on the quick draw. One thing i want to touch on that i may of passed up is audio and chat quality. One thing i was worried about with using the controller as a piggyback for your headset was loss of quality. Surprisingly audio quality was very good during my play throughs of cutscenes on solo RPGs. All my mids and lows hit crisp and clean allowing me to feel every bass drop as explosions went off. While playing FPS (first person shooters) i was able to pick up on every footstep and noise near me allowing me to get the upper hand on my enemies. Chat was clean and clear allowing myself to be heard easily as well as allowing my team mates to be heard with no drop outs. Obliviously keep in mind all of this is gonna vary depending on your headset. Here's my take away from this headset. This is a very nice unit to have, especially at the price point that this unit is coming in at. What sucks is i personally own units that are double and triple the price of this controller and yet this controller performs just as good if not even slightly better in some areas. The controls are very precise and almost no lag exist. Audio is crisp and clear with not a single drop out or latency issue. My only real gripe with the controller (its a small gripe) is the fact that there appears to be no customizable options for this controller. Meaning the joystick tops can not be removed to allow for wider cushions for larger hands. Basically the whole unit appears to be modular making customizable parts almost impossible to achieve on this controller. But that is a minor complaint and one just simply worth noting. Overall if i had this controller before hand then i can promise you i definitely would of never have bought a more expensive controller as this one performs so beautifully. Do yourself a favor and stop looking around and pick yourself up one.

As my title states, this well-built controller is plug and play. I figured out that I can use it with any USB-C to USB-A cable to plug into my PC, but it does include a long, nicely-braided USB-C to USB-A cable. The controller is amazingly well built. It has a quality heft to it and the buttons and triggers are texturized to help with those of you who are like me that suffer from "sweaty palms" syndrome. I will admit that I am a fairly weak-sauce gamer, I and on some games like Skyrim and Witcher 3, I just can't shake my love of playing those games with controllers and controller vibrations to really punctuate those hits and blocks. I think for the price this controller is fantastic. Not to mention, with the ability to use any USB-C to USB-A controller, you don't have to be concerned with where to store it or the cable bending and wearing out (like my last few PC controllers did). I highly recommend this controller for PC gaming use!

To get right to it, this is a great controller and a truly remarkable value at this price point. I’ve used Turtle Beach audio devices for decades and I’ve never been disappointed. I’m mostly a PC gamer but I have an Xbox One S as well and I love having a single controller that works easily and with almost exactly the same functionality on both platforms. The only thing that doesn’t work on both platforms is the “chat mix” which controls chat volume separately from game volume. Not a big deal to me personally but worth noting if chat is a big part of your gaming. Highlights: - Cross-platform compatibility. - The integrated audio controls were the standout feature to me. Having the volume controls, EQ settings, and mic-mute all handy was fantastic. - The 4 EQ presets were basic but adequate (Signature, Bass boost, Treble-boost, Bass+Treble boost), especially for quick on-the-fly adjustments. I found myself continually using the “Signature” EQ preset, it was easily the most balanced sound profile to my ears. - Superhuman audio -- So far as I can tell this is more of a 5th EQ setting that highlights frequencies in the typical footstep/reloading/creaking/door range to draw your attention to them over other ambient sounds, its effectiveness will vary game to game and I personally didn’t think it helped much. But it doesn’t hurt to have the option. - The programmable buttons were useful to map to specific controller actions. - On a PC, the Recon doesn’t show as an audio device until you plug in a headset. Plug in a headset though and it’ll show up as “Headphones (Xbox Controller)” in a few seconds, and will become a separate audio-out selectable device. Not surprisingly, all of the Recon audio controls (EQ, Volume, Mic-mute) work even on PC. As noted above, only “chat mix” doesn’t work in Windows 10, and that’s documented in the guide so it’s to be expected. The one thing: I loved almost everything about this controller except one thing, and this one thing is going to be pretty subjective so I consider it more an observation than a criticism. Although the controller is very similar physically to an original Xbox controller, there’s just enough of a difference that I found my hands starting to cramp during gaming sessions. I’ve compared it side-by-side with an original Xbox controller and the main difference to me seems to be that the original Xbox controller palm holds are slightly more meaty and simply fit into my palms better. It may well be something I’ll just get used to, and I hope that’s the case, because this is a powerful and affordable controller that packs a lot of additional convenient capabilities into the standard form factor and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone, especially cross-platform gamers.

Great controller, really good feel and button response. The select and start button are really low compared to other controllers so it might feel different when you first start using the controller but the added adjustment controls on top are helpful at times. Great game response and firm button feel make it a worth while purchase.

This controller rocks. It has a better build quality than all of the official ones, including the elites. The official one's issue is that the bumpers suck. They break really easily due to their flawed design. Turtle Beach's design is much better, and the bumpers don't feel like they're going to break. I haven't even bothered with the additional features since I just needed a replacement controller. This serves the purpose and then some. It loses a star for not being able to go wireless though. Even though it's listed as wired, being able to unplug the USB-C cable from it makes is seems like it can also be used wirelessly. That's my fault for not researching it better, but oh well.

Got this controller specifically for mimicking Xbox, but for PC games. Works great. Intuitive controls, customizable, ergonomic for comfortable game play for hours and so much better than keyboard and mouse. Totally brings the game console feel to PC games. I like the super human hearing mode, especially in games like Fortnight so you get a better sense of where your opponents are. Sounds passthrough on wired headset through the controller is excellent. 10’ USB cord. No batteries since you’re wired and gets all the way to my couch from the TV that I have hooked up to the gaming PC (see pic). No software to download or setup on a PC – works out of the box with just plugging in the USB cable. Lots of customization options – all done on the controller itself. Thumbs up.

This thing is awesome! I have a PowerA - Fusion Pro Wired Controller and it's nice except those back flipper button paddles. This Turtle Beach controller has proper buttons, all around. Easy to program, easy to use this unit. Good sticks too, robust. It's like an xbox 360 quality build..strong. Decent length for the usb cord and headphone jack. I've only used it with my win 10 pc, cannot comment on xbox use. There's many features it has that work only with xbox. With PC, it's a normal controller but you can map the extra back buttons (great for rutter control or emergency break).
