Posted .Shirl - it is likely the AC adapter cord and/or telephone line cord is not sitting in the corresponding channels on the underside of the base, causing it to not lie flat on your desktop. Your symptoms are not common.

Excellent Phone & Answering Machine for Elderly

To my surprise, VTech still made a model almost exactly like her old one. What a relief. After reading the reviews, we were thrilled to have a phone that was still easy to set up and easy to operate. Outstanding purchase.
