Main drives are SSD but we still use old motor HD's for archival purposes since cost/GB is still better with these.

I purchased the brown box version. It arrived quickly and well packed - includes just the bare drive, no cables or software. The drive installed easily in my desktop system and it is fast and quiet. All you could ask for from any drive.

Mac Instructions Quiet Great OEM Price & Packing

    • I replaced my 2006 Mac Pro original HDD. On that Mac there’s no cables nor software required. Just plug it in. So this OEM bare drive was just what I needed. • It’s pre-formatted for PC’s. If it’s installed in a Mac it alerts you that it’s not readable. Don’t be alarmed. It has to be formatted with the Disk Utility app that came with your Mac. It can also be partitioned and made bootable in any Mac OS X. Search Apple’s site for specific instructions as this bare drive doe not come with any. • The 7200rpm drive itself is very quiet. It’s WD’s “Blue” category. WD’s web site has model comparisons to “Green” and “Black”. • It doesn’t come in a fancy retail box with cables, manual or software which constitutes this as a “bare” drive. The product photo shows the insides of the drive. But it’s completely encased in metal so don’t get confused that is why it’s called a “bare” drive. I bring that up because my friend didn’t understand the terminology. I can see the potential confusion as people are used to buying in the retail packaging. • It was shipped quickly double-boxed in a heavy-duty kraft box with the standard thick plastic holders and sealed in it’s original antistatic bag. • BB price matched a competitor, I used a Rewards Certificate from my recent MacBook Pro Retina purchase, today I saw BB went on sale so they price matched. Very happy with the deal.

    Best 1TB HDD

In my experience, it is currently the best 1TB HDD on the market. Speed wise they are all the same, but for reliability - I'll stick with WD blue. I have used more than 100 discs this year and trust WD the most.

    $39.99 for 1tb? Deal!

Bought it on sale for $39.99 , not disappointed at all! It is a bit slow compared to an SSD drive but for $40 bucks I can't complain! I recommend this hard drive and even more if you get it for a steal like me. Unlike the seagate hardrives these don't die on you within 6 months. Worth every penny

My 1TB WD Black died fairly fast. Bought two 1TB WD Blues when they were on sale for $40. So far, I haven't noticed any performance difference.

i think every hard drive i have ever bought has comes with the date cable to hook it up, its probably 10 cents, so i could add it to my windows seven computer, this one came with nothing. also windows seven is not just plug and play, you have to initialize the drive and format it in the device manager. but i found some videos online on how to do it once i had the 10 cent cable. i put it in a refurbished dell optiplex 760.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about this WD 1TB Internal SATA Hard Drive for Desktops (OEM/Bare Drive). To clarify, a hard drive identified as bare or OEM (original equipment manufacturer) does not include a cable, manual or software — only the drive — which contributes to the low price. We apologize for the confusion and inconvenience, and we will revise the detail page of this model and other bare drives to ensure this aspect is more apparent in the future.

Got two of them, instead of one big hard drive as these are single platter (make less noise, less heat, etc).

    Lifespan from my experience

I purchased this HD October of 2015 for a build for my son. He used the PC on and off for the past 2 years and he started to complain the computer was getting slow. He removed the HD a week ago (Jan 2018) and I scanned it for any viruses using OS X and Windows and nothing showed up but it was reading slowly. The Mac and PC recognized the drive but it was not accessible. So I ran the Western Digital Data Life Guard software using Windows 7 and to do a simple Quick Test it was going to take 395 hours to complete. Just that made me think there was something wrong with the drive. So I removed it and reinstalled it. I told my son that anything on it may be lost. So I erased the drive and repartioned it to one fresh partition. I ran a drive sector test and it passed after a few hours but when I opened the WD software to run a quick test it was back to over 200+ hrs to run. Also note, the drive was still not accessible after partitioning it. The warranty expired October 2017, exactly 2 years after the purchase and here I am 2 months later after the warranty expired with a bad drive. Yes, for $50 it's a great deal! but having to know the drive won't last longer than 2 years makes me wonder if it was actually worth the expense even though my son did not have much data used on it. Me personally I have the same exact drive used as a back up drive and it sits most of the time so it's not used more than 2 times a month at most. But if I need to rely on it for data storage, I'm thinking of switching to something else.....
