Drive overheats, re/dis-connects every 30 seconds

They both developed a habit of disconnecting and reconnecting every 30 seconds. I assume the drive gets hot when accessed too much and shuts down to protect the data. On my Mac "Spotlight" was indexing the drives like mad which caused them to shut down. Then when they came back up, Spotlight dutifully started re-indexing them. Which overworked the drives and the cycle continued. I disabled Spotlight for external drives. I then wrote my own shell script to copy the files one-by-one and wait 1 second between file copies. This is working. But I have over 750,000 files to transfer so I expect it will take over 8 days to complete. This is the THIRD time I've had Western Digital HDs fail on me. LESSON LEARNED: NEVER BUY WESTERN DIGITAL.
