The day I got it I plugged it into all my computers and installed the onboard software. I started with a desktop(4 hard drives) No problem. Formatted all, installed Linux.
Then HP laptop #1, 250gb. Did a factory reset. Again no problem.
Then to HP laptop #2. 500gb.
Partitioned the drive, did another factory reset, and installed Android O.S. for dual boot.
I then wanted to transfer some XBOX games to it.
The day I went to do it, I plugged it in and the drive started clicking. I got sick to my stomach.
I unplugged it, let it sit a while , plugged it in my desktop and this time heard a howling sound and the clicking. I unplugged it and walked around the house getting more sick to my stomach.
I wanted to wrap my hands around someone's neck but the only one there was me. I sat there just thinking of all the movies, videos, pictures, documents, and the personal information I may have lost.
All together I only put about 800gb on it So I the next day I plugged it in and it was quiet. I quickly partioned it, cloned the operating system of the the 500 GB and because I had a few 160gb drives playing around so, I format those, used one in the HP, inplace of the 500. Took 2 160s and the 500 and transferred everything from this new one back into those.
So I backed up my backup.
Over the past month I have had no problems. No howling or clicking, though one time I plugged it in and an error came on the screen telling me the drive was corrupt . You guessed it, I got sick.
On screen pop up said unplug it and try again. Boy was I worried again.
But alls fine in tinseltown
My heart and my stomach has taken a beaten over this hard drive.
Makes me wonder if I should have bought a bunch of flash drives instead.
Maybe I should have saved my Polaroid camera and VCR.

I spent several hours working with Apple Care, trying to format it. In the end, I returned it for refund and purchased WD My Passport for Mac at Best Buy.

There is nothing intuitive about using this b/u drive. It comes with no printed instructions. I have had it for a month and still it is not working properly.

Great once you figure out how to reformat for Mac

I spent hours struggling trying to get the Mac Disk Utility to reformat this drive. No success. Neither were trips to Geek Squad successful. Finally, I called WD support; within 5 minutes, the drive was reformatted. NOWHERE online did I find this essential information - to view ALL devices (in Disk Utility) -- and then to do the reformat/erase on the drive that appears ABOVE your external drive. You can only view that by using the Disk Utility Menu controls in the upper left of your screen (in step #3 below). Here's the sequence:
1. Connect external drive
2. Click Initialize… (if it says this drive cannot be read by this Mac)
3. From Disk Utility menu (in upper left of screen), choose View > All Devices
4. Then choose the "Easystore" device listed one level above the disk2s1 (or whatever name appears for your WD external drive)
5. Click Erase (top middle choice of Disk Utility window)
6. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to use drive ONLY with Macs - and/or if you want to use this drive for Time Machine. (Note: If you are not using drive for Time Machine, and want files to be readable on Windows machines, too, choose exFAT format.)
7. Select GUID partition
That's it! SUCCESS at last!

Great compact device with tons of storage. Plug and play right out of the box. Great price for the quality.

I require a lot of storage space for use in video editing and for teaching classes on film and music. I've been very happy with the WD drives I've used in the past and this drive has worked quite well so far in quickly transferring data and allowing me to bring it with me for classes. I picked up a USB-C cable for faster transfers and more flexibility in connections and can recommend that as well if you need to interface with devices that use that connection.

I put one star for this product because it was not able to be formatted on my macbook and they were not able to do so in the store as well.

Curious being asked to review a new Ext. HD ... not sure why one would find it necessary. I only needed one because a needed an Ext. HD on which to store timely backups of my iMac. That was about 2 months ago. So far, in 2 months, it hasn't failed.... Not exactly a glowing endorsement but what do you expect......

It does everything I want it to. It has backup software on it that I haven't used. But, the amount of storage is great. It also doesn't take up much space at all. Smaller than a piece of toast.
