bought this drive to be an emergency backup, but..
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this drive to use on my windows 10 workstation to backup my video files from my home server (freenas). I had backed up several folders to the windows 10 computers local drive just fine, but I needed more capacity to backup all the files. So I bought this drive, and found that even though it is USB 3.0, I could only get a sustained throughput of less than 7 MB/s.. Subsequent web searched showed this to be a common problem. I will find another use for this drive, but it is not workable for the task I bought it to perform. Bottom line: This drive is simple to use, and lots of reliable storage, but for bulk transfers it is very, VERY slow!

Crashed lost data and got a refurb unit to replace
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this unit as my 4th WD external drive. All the others are still going strong. This model, however, died after 8 months. I ran all the WD diagnostics and prayed, but it is dead. So now I have the fun task of returning to WD, which I have never had to do. Did you know there is no number to talk to anyone listed on their Contact Us page? And if you write an email requesting assistance from that same Contact Us page, no one responds? Oh and that they charge YOU to return a defective product they sold you? I am starting to hate these guys. If you are considering buying this unit, better buy 2. All the 5 star reviews are true, easy setup, fast file transfer, etc, until it dies an early death. Then all the 1 star reviews are true. I didn't see anyone mention the poor customer service from WD yet so I thought I would mention it. UPDATE: After being provided a phone # by WD, I called and got them to give me a RMA label that was postage paid. In return they sent me a REFURBISHED UNIT, not a new one. I am in negotiations to try and get a new one so I stand a better chance of not losing my data again to drive failure.

The Sweet Spot
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drive represents the point where price and capacity converge to meet my needs without being a big hit to my wallet. I consolidated several smaller storage devices and consumed 80% of this drive day 1 and no issues to report so far.

Meh!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Inconsistent. Nearly every morning I have to restart my iMac or the WD to get it to back up. It seems to turn off when my IMAC is in sleep mode. Usually overnight. When it works it works fine. I’ve had a couple of good days. Who knows what holds for tomorrow?

Just don't
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I will from now on never buy a WD external hard drive again. On vacation with a buddy's laptop. Bought the drive to store all my stuff in. Worked fine...on his PC. Get back home and attach it to my desktop...nothing, no self install, no recognition by the pc, . So I go to the WD website and download the discovery and security app for it. So I get the password all in and it now recognizes there is a drive there. But hold the phone it's now write protected and I can't save anything onto it. Tells me to format the disk for this (my) pc and proceeds to give me instructions on how to do it. But of course they don't work. There is no way to initialize or format the disk. I try to do a quick format with the WD erase app, this fails every time I try, I've been around the block and back with disk management and whatever other "fixes" I can find on the internet but not one has so far worked. So I totally power down, restart the pc, lets give it one more try eh? Now I put the password in and it's been sitting there showing the little "working on it clock" for 10 minutes. This should be so simple, plug it in, let it install, put in the password and your off to the races. SO what good is a hard drive you can't even get into let alone save anything to? It's worthless. So I'll goof with it for the rest of the evening here. If I get things squared away, I will edit this review. If not, it means a month old hard drive has been deposited into the trash.

Awesome until it died
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to use with my Xbox One X and it was working amazing! Unfortunately after using it for almost 4 months it’s no longer working. It tries to boot up for a quick second but then dies. Really disappointed with this hard drive. $99.99 down the drain.

Failed after 1 day
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What a waste of money. I needed extra storage for myself and I looked around for the best product and based off the reviews and my experience with WD I purchased this. Hooked it up, went through installation, copying and putting it into production it failed. The drive would not spin up. Having data on it, I could not return it with the drive in it so I had to eat the cost so I could destroy that hard drive. Do not waste your time with hard drives, upgrade to SSD's. Yes they can fail to but less moving parts.

Does Not Work With Mac
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After reading reviews, I purchased this item for use with an iMac. Right out of the box, this item struggled to communicate with the iMac. After trying to find a fix on the internet, it was more trouble than it was worth. Files were unable to write to the drive when the iMac would recognize the drive. Also, the drive would constantly spin when the computer was not in use. I took the hard drive back after two weeks of struggles and bought a Segarte Backup Plus. Right out of the box the drive was recognized and has worked flawlessly with the iMac. The drive even sleeps when the computer is not in use.

Dead out of the box
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have always trusted WD hard drives, rarely having a problem over the years but I cannot recommend this item. It was dead on arrival. Plugged it in, nothing. After a couple of hours of trouble shooting, I decided to return it for a full refund. (See similar reviews on WD website.)

Worst Connection Ever
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love the MyBook product line and have never had issue before this. But Google it... this Type 3 MicroUSB stinks. It's intermittent, it's flawed, it disconnects randomly. NEVER again.

Unreliable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed to clear the data from my NAS drives because I'm building a new one. The transfer FROM the NAS to MyBook went without a hitch, but when it came time to move the files back it took 2 days because of the device dropping the USB connection. If the drive isn't reliable then it's useless. I'm returning it to BB for a refund.
