is a good device but missing a power switch and don't use it for anything more than a backup device, it is slow to mount and retrieve data. am unable to install the embedded application.

It does what it’s suppose to do. The only thing I don’t like is the vibration sound. My older WD perhaps had a better base.

Just simply went completely silent while transferring tons of photos. Mac Disk Repair & WD Utilities useless -the thing is dead. If you're not aware: Mac's and external hard drives (can't speak for other brands than WD) are a living hell to deal with anymore. Click all the options you want in Finder Prefs & System Prefs, the icon is supposed to be on screen but it's a trauma one day and perfect the next day. System recognizes the hard drives, not the finder. Repeat 1000 times.

    Annoying noise, vibration, and thud

I am very disappointed in this hard drive because it makes an incredibly annoying hum sound and "thud" as it's internal components apparently spin. As a photographer I've had several high capacity external drives over the years from various manufacturers, including WD. But this is the first one that has ever had such an annoying presence. (It's kind of like being in the room with a co-worker who is constantly clearing their throat.) Normally I would keep a HD on the desk next to my laptop. But with this one constantly being annoying I have to keep it on the floor, where I'm concerned it will get knocked over. I would exchange it but unfortunately I'm outside the 30 day window. No major issues with the data storage and retrieval (it may be slightly slower than what I expected, but I'm not sure if that is the fault of the drive or my laptop which is 3 years old). But the noise and vibration is a deal breaker. Lesson learned: I should have returned it while I had the chance.

    WD - Black External - 8 TB

Overall significantly disappointing, processes slow, loads slow, and seems to be loaded down already being brand new. I'm usually a firm believer in WD and their externals, but after this being my 5th one and each of them slow down quickly, and this one being new and the worst, I'm not happy. It's a good price and a good amount of storage, but it's almost not worth it due to the slow/sluggy-ness.

The setup was easy but not setting up backups

Besides not being able to setup automatic backups, I also find it slow, which may not be the brand but it is the reality of backing up to it.

Noisy, vibrates, will not allow Win7 boot to run

I have a Win7 computer that I have tried to use this device with. If I plug in the USB connection before applying power, the computer will not boot up. WD claims this is a Windows problem, but I also have an external Seagate drive that allows the computer to boot without any problems. Additionally, the drive is noisy and vibrates the whole desk when running.

Wonderful product just very sensitive to movement. If you shake table or touch the drive it turns off.

WD My Book bad, Best Buy good!!!!

The WD 8tb My Book cord from unit to USB was sketchy, working sometimes and not sometimes for the first couple of times I struggled with this unit. Downloaded the software from WD however, only 2 of the 3 functions worked. The backup (the most critical) would not work. Contacted WD tech, got a link to answers that apparently occasionally works as a fix for this very common issue. WD chat dude hung up on me as soon as he sent me the link. The link to the fix did not resolve the issue. On the bright side - Best Buy was great! I told Best Buy what the issue was and got a full refund. Thank you Best Buy!!!

I purchased this Oct. 16, 2019. It is now Oct 11, 2020 and the drive will not boot. It never worked properly to begin with. I constantly had to restart my computer just so that this disk would be readable. It had to be reformatted at least twice. I was using it with macOS.

    Not for Xbox one

I bought this external hard drive for my Xbox One X. I thought I would be getting what I paid for it, basically I thought I would get 8 terabytes of space for all my games and more but it kept on showing 1.8 of 1.8 terabytes which is kind of screwed up because I paid about $200 for an item that doesn't even work on a console. But a lot of reviews said that works for Xbox one yet it doesn't.

I purchased this hard drive as backup for photos. It set on my shelf for about six months before being mounted to the my Mac. After one week, the drive has crashed. Bummer!! I'm so disappointed. Now, all it does it make annoying humming noises.

Slight bump to this caused it to freeze and now I can’t access my data. Best Buy would not fix it or even try. No solution readily available to resolve this catastrophic loss. Thank goodness I had a secondary partial back up. But still lost important data. Just know that this is very fragile.

Not sure why, but the back up to this drive fails every night. I have to unplug the drive and replug it back in so it can do another backup. It back ups all day okay, just stops backups by the end of the day. I've never experienced this before. I have another My Book drive that doesn't have this problem.

I've had this hard drive for about a year now and it's served me well for my basic needs. The other side to this coin is that it is slow when I first start it up if it doesn't stay plugged up into the wall. The build is not durable at all so keep it in a steady location as well. Nonetheless it performs fine other than that.

I just read a review where one user only turns it on to back up. Maybe I'll try that - rushed into purchase greedy for the size, but it's going to end up a deep backup tool rather than a system player.
