I only got 2 years from this device before it died. It was expensive and it never really worked that well. I am very sorry I bought it and will never buy another my cloud drive again. When I called the company they would not stand by their product.

I don't know if it good yet. It was bought as new. Was open box when it got here. Don't know if it was returned or not. you can see where someone used a box cutter and opened the box. It had no tamper proof seal.

Currently doing a 750GB time machine backup, while remotely uploading 60GB of data and remotely streaming a 14GB Hd movie, with no buffering. I can mount the drive remotely and even setup users to share data with. The web interface is awesome and so are the apps. the setup was simple. Make sure you have a good ISP with a good router and know what you're doing. by far one of the best NAS setups I've ever used. 20 years in the tech world

My wife and I bought this drive to connect via the router so she could store millions of photos without loading her SP3 completely full. I started using it to back up large files that I need but not necessarily on my local drive. I can quickly access the mycloud data through the network and from my phone and from any computer with internet access, it is so helpful to have access to all the random files I need in my business at anytime from practically anywhere. Not to mention it has a media server and options for credentials for each folder if you want to keep people/kids/visitors out of private data, etc. And I am in control of all of it, which is great. (bc im obviously a control freak) The Dashboard is very user friendly and is clear with what functions do what for the data. Overall I love this thing and am buying another 3Tb to go next to the 1 TB and other 3TB that I already have!

    Disappointing & Waste of Time

BOTTOM LINE FIRST: Does not truly provide cloud functionality. Use free cloud services for remote access, and cheaper alternatives for expanding your LAN storage. You CANNOT connect remotely without using the WD software. This is because this drive (and apparently all the rest of WD's products) uses AFT protocol to locate the local drive on the local network. This does not work over the internet! I bought this to connect to my iTunes library remotely and to do remote Time Machine backups. But again, the only way to access this drive remotely (outside of your local network) is by using the WD application. This renders this drive useless for what I needed it for. The benefits of this drive are storing your data on your own drive rather than using a cloud service, or having a storage device on your local area network that can be used by devices on that network, or sharing the data with remote users using the provided WD software. But those are no big benefits over the existing free cloud solutions. For storing, accessing and sharing files remotely you can use Google Drive or Dropbox for free. For having extra storage on your local area network you can buy a drive at half the price that will do the same (I was using a 2TB portable USB drive plugged into the back of my router and it worked fine). About WD technical service: I spoke to them several times. Tech service suggested I speak to Sales to see what other products might work for me. The Sales rep said that doing what I want should be possible and told me to call back and ask for a Level 2 tech support, but that didn't solve the issue either. Turn out that the entire WD product line is NOT MAC FRIENDLY and will not work using anything else but the WD software.

I have used my WD 6TB unit for about a year now. I put it on an UPS since I noticed it was very sensitive to power fluctuations. Since doing so, I have had perfect performance. I intend to purchase another.

Use Caution, when using this product

Very fast, when it's connected to the gigabyte Ethernet. very quiet slim and very portable as well. CONS: User Interface, requires major overhaul. UI is designed by Techie peoples for extremely Techie customers. UI looks very simple, but little complicated. I backed up almost 5tb worth's of my ten years old data's to this drive, hoping I will be able to access it on my Local Area Network, with my tablets, mobile phones, laptops and other pc's. I was exploring their share features and a simple click on one of the buttons, without any notice or cautions, WIPED out my entire drive, all 5tb worths of data was gone in a blink of eye in front of me. I called WD tech support, and they wanted me to speak to the Level 2 tech support, took me almost 24 hours of wait and sleepless night to reach Level 2. after speaking to a very nice and knowledgeable tech support PAUL, he determined, nothing can be done or recovered data with the help of data recovery software, since this drive uses Linux operating system, I might have to send it to the data recovery specialist, and recovering 5tb worth of data would be cost prohibitive. Being a techie person myself, if this drive can wipe out my data's, I highly suggest to take extreme caution while playing with their "BUGGY" interface, Please make sure to keep backups of data that you are planning to dump on this drive. A simple External USB drive will be lot easier to operate, manage and play with it, then this Network Drive.

This NAS died completely in 3 years. It was also difficult to manage with the software on it. Shortest lifespan for a HDD. I'll stick to portable HDDs.

    Boy, is this thing slow

And I'm not even trying to use it over WiFi. I have it connected directly to my laptop, and copying files to it is agonizingly slow. The MyBooks I have are much faster, and I was foolish enough to think that I would be getting that speed plus additional benefits. Not the case at all. If you need something fast, buy a MyBook and back up to that.

Despite some reviews claiming this unit was difficult to set up and just as difficult to use, my experience has been the complete opposite. Then again I also have over 20 years of IT support, including desktop and hardware support, so this was a breeze for me. If I did have a question, the web-based help function quickly answered my questions. I purchased the 6Tb version and moved all my files from a 1Tb external drive to the MyCloud drive in under 30 minutes. Not had any problems since day one.

    Bad choice for SmartWare backups

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My main purpose for buying this was to have a backup target for my desktop and laptops. One of the features Western Digital lists on their website is fast backups. "My Cloud is on your own network, so backing up is much faster." So I installed their SmartWare software which handles backups. Horrible, horrible interface. And it's not fast at all. My desktop has been working on its 1.2tb of data for nearly 2 full days and only about 20% of the data has actually been stored on the device. I'm watching the network I/O and it's fluctuating between 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps with occasional bursts into double digits. If I copy a file directly to or from the device using Windows Explorer, it cruises along around 500 Mbps reading and 300 Mbps writing. If I turn off the backup, the speed nearly doubles. Clearly the device is capable of moving data quickly but something is very, very wrong with the backup software. I'm tempted to try third party software but I'm curious to see just how long this initial backup will take.
