I've owned several WD portable hard drives. This one too is good, I thought it was going to be a USB c connection, but just regular USB. That was my fault for not checking the specs more thoroughly

Great for those that don’t need reliable drives!

I’ve gone through 2 of these in 4 months. First one lasted 2 months and stopped working. I thought it may have just been faulty so I returned it for a new one. Second one worked phenomenally until I plugged it in one day and, like it’s predecessor, the drive decided it was no longer interested in connecting to my computer. Thought it might be because I have to “unlock it”. By the time I tried it said I already have 5 failed password attempts (I don’t even remember setting a password to begin with). The only option after that was erasing the hard drive. I then went through the erasing process, only to have a window saying even my hard drive erase failed. For the sake of your sanity never buy this.

We really needed some extra storage & bought this so we could use it for different devices and holding games. I was able to install ESO on it and after playing for 30 minutes the next day, it kept saying "fatal hardware error" Don't buy this. You get what you pay for. Shell out more money for something better that doesn't die in 24 hours.

This is a good drive to use for backups, but not fast enough to use for gaming. Bought it to use with a PS4 and it takes forever to write data to.

Setup not intuitive. No support from the manufacturer- only the advice to “get help from the online community”. WHAT !! Also, setup online info includes a pitch to SELL an added product. Made it appear that it was part of the setup. Bad (and dishonest) customer service. I returned the product to Best Buy.

It would continually show that files were being copied to the external drive, however, though even their completion appeared from the progress statuses, no files were ever saved to the drive. As a result, I lost two years worth of work and data. I tried to copy files after I learned this to see if it had somehow been user error, but it wasn’t. I would definitely never recommend and chance receiving a defective item as I must have. The worst part is Best Buy then refused to accept the return.

Do NOT buy a Western Digital Drive for a Mac!

I have bought dozens of external drives for business. I bought this to use with a. Mac and was told in-store it is compatible. It is not. To run it on a Mac you have to install a program. I did this and learned that it wanted full permissions for system, security, other storage, cloud storage etc. It was so bad that I returned the item - complained to Best Buy and bought a Seagate that already had both file systems installed at Staples. (For less $$.). You do not want an external hard drive that requires the permissions this software was asking for.

I’m sure this works fine with a PC, and maybe it was just my problem-but I couldn’t get this to work with my Mac and had to return it. It’s too bad because it looks really nice and I love the color

I rate it five stars for suiting the purpose for which it was purchased. I rate it three stars for the review because I expect it will fail fairly quickly based on my past experience with My Passport drives.

Came with almost zero instructions. Took a long time to do a backup directly from my computer. Love the compact design. Intend to put it in safe deposit box.

The drive works but the auto backup feature doesn’t. I just copy things by dragging and dropping and then it works. I purchased it because of the price when it was on sale.

Bought this for my PS4 but when trying to format, it says this hard drive is not supported. Managed to switch with a different external drive I already had just had to move everything over.

If you need slower but higher capacity external drive then these units that are not SSD are acceptable but don't compare the transfer speed to an SSD or NvME drive.

I tried to return a faulty hard drive in store, after chatting with Best Buy. I have been told that I must take my laptop to erase the hard drive or leave it there if I want to change it for another one. But I can't leave my hard drive with personal information and the technical team can't erase it without my computer. The hard drive is corrupted but they must erase it in the store before I changed it for another one, my privacy is at stake. And I do not have to carry my laptop, the store must have the means to analyze the failure and, if necessary, delete the private information. The strange situation is that some of the information is accessible but it is impossible to erase or format the hard disk. I am not required to trust Best Buy by changing my faulty hard drive if it has not been erased before. And explaining that it is inaccessible and impossible to erase by ordinary means is something that they do not understand in the store. It would be better for them to work with engineers when they don't understand this. I must keep an unusable hard disk to preserve the possible information there, but my trust with Best Buy has disappeared.
