I use it for intermittent backups (about 10-20 minutes for data backups every 2 weeks and 45 min each for computer backups every other month) and long term storage, so it doesn't have a lot of hours of run time. The unit is truly "plug and play": you don't need to install any software to use the unit, and you don't need to install software on your computer to use the password encryption option. You will spend about 30-60" longer to access the hard drive if you choose the encryption option, but you have the option to set the device to recognize your computer so you don't need to use your password on that computer in the future. The encryption icon appears on File Explorer as a CD drive (even though it isn't), and you just click on that and enter your password to unlock, then click on the hard drive to access your data. When you eject/safely remove, it locks again. The unit looks good, runs quietly, stays less than 40 deg C even when running for 24+ hrs when I refresh the data on it.
