Crashed in less than a month

I purchased two of these identical 4gb models for photography back up. One crashed hard and will not mount or show up on disk utilities and the other is now making clicking noises and I'm hoping I can get that one backed up before it crashes. Very upset and cannot return as I have valuable personal data on the drives that could possibly be recovered. So Sad.

HORRIBLE DRIVE. IT LASTED ONLY ONE MONTH! I NEVER HAD ONE LAST SUCH A SHORT TIME! I AM NOW KICKING MYSELF FOR NOT RETURNING THE DRIVE TO THE COLLEGEVILLE, PA STORE AFTER NOTICING THAT THE SEAL ON THE BOX HAD ALREADY BEEN CUT AFTER GETTING HOME. I AM VERY CAREFUL WITH MY DRIVES. I ALWAYS USE THE WINDOWS "SAFELY REMOVE DRIVES" FUNCTION BEFORE DISCONNECTING THEM. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. LUCKILY I HAVE ANOTHER BACK UP OF EVERYTHING< BUT SO MUCH WASTED TIME ORGANIZING AND BACKING FILES UP ON THIS PIECE OF JUNK. TIME I'LL NEVER GET BACK.

Still going strong 6 years later

Bought this in 2017, and it's now almost 6 years old. While it's limited by its speed, it has proved to be a very robust little external hard drive. I use it to store movies, TV shows, old family photos and videos, and computer games. It's never failed or been corrupted or required any kind of repair. It stays connected to a hub that's connected to my MacBook Pro and while there have been a few occasions where it has unexpectedly unmounted, I believe that's more to do with the hub than the disk itself. WD makes some reliable hard drives.

The product must be good. However, the one I got, while it was working fine in the beginning, it broke down. Now, I lost my data and cannot access the HDisk by any PC or OS.

Very first time I downloaded all of my photos, the next time I went to use it the drive showed it was not there. Cannot access these lifetime of photos. Has been a brick since. I am being told I disconnected it wrong and noone would help. If anyone knows how to fix this, I would be forever grateful!

I have been using WD products since long for my personal use and have various of these drives with different capacities however this 4TB one was most unreliable. The read/write failed over an year of use. Luckily my warranty is valid, I registered my case with WD, now looking forward for their response.

Once it held all of my laptop/desktop backups, and now it still does just as great as additional storage for my Xbox Series X. Super fast with USB 3.0 and has never given me any problems.

Could not automatic back up my computer. And the tech from the manufacturer's web site was clueless. After 2 hours on the phone and computer, he did not know how to make it work. Threw away the box by mistake, I just lost $110.00.

Significant issues trying to work with MacOS

    Posted .

I purchased this hard drive because I had heard so many good things about it - it apparently performs well in terms of reliability, longevity and price. This may all be true and I might update my review in the future, but out of the box I had significant issues trying to get it to work with my computer. For reference I'm running a MacBook Air on macOS Sierra. On plugging it in, the drive was immediately recognized but needed to be reformatted for use, which was fine by me. However, I have both Mac and Windows computers, so I wanted to format it to a FAT32 system to be used by both. Immediately after doing this, the drive became (1) impossible to normally dismount from my computer without Force Ejecting, (2) eventually could not be written to, and (3) stopped being recognized by Disk Utility. This was within 2 weeks of purchase! After a few hard resets and an unplug-replug, I was able to recognize it with Disk Utility and reformat it into MacOS-Journaled, but of course this comes at the expense of loss of compatibility with Windows computers. It has since worked fairly well and I have no issues with it, but I need to mention the significant growing pains involved, not to mention the sheer panic I felt when it was suddenly...unrecognizable...by my computer. I'll keep using it but I have significant concern about suddenly (and permanently) losing access to all my important files. This is definitely not the Western Digital I'm used to.

Do not buy this for your game system. I have it installed as my PS4 external storage. It was working fine for 6 months until it suddenly stopped working. Extremely frustrating. It is not being recognized by the computer as well so I cannot even reformat it. Not reliable as any gaming system storage.
