One of the major trends across this generation of consoles has been the steady expansion of game size—40GB is quite common, and it’s hardly unexpected to see a game install twice that size. The 500GB hard drives that are standard on the original Xbox One will quickly fill up with such games; even the 1TB drives of later models will be tested by burgeoning digital game libraries. Unlike Sony, which allows access to swap out its internal drive on the PS4, the Xbox’s storage expansion options are limited to external drives. The WD Black P10 Xbox game drive is an simple way to add plenty of room for expansive game libraries. (Of course, this drive can also be used externally with a PS4 or a PC.) The drive inside is a 2.5” mechanical hard drive with a capacity of 3TB. (Windows sees about 2.72TB total available.) The box claims a transfer speed of “up to 130/MB/s” over its USB 3.2 gen 1 transfer cable. A quick test in Windows using a Dell G3 gaming laptop found that claim holds up for sequential read speeds—I got just under that. The drive itself is ensconced in a case that is white plastic around the sides and bottom, but the top itself is black metal (for heat dissipation, I’m sure, as well as aesthetics), with the WD Black logo and an Xbox logo appearing on the metal. In the box you get the drive, the USB cable type A to micro B cable, and documentation. Also included is a free two-month subscription of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate service. Of course, this is intended mainly as an expansion drive for the Xbox, and connecting it couldn’t be easier: the install guide has literally 2 steps to follow. Simply plug in the USB cord between the two, and the Xbox will detect it and ask to set it up as external storage. If asked, you’ll want to make sure you choose the option to make it your game storage, otherwise it will be formatted only for media like music or movies. You can also choose to make it the default storage location, or continue to fill the internal drive first. Performance is similar to gaming off an internal mechanical hard drive—it’s not an SSD, and while SSDs have certainly come down in price, it hardly makes sense to buy an external SSD for game library storage that likely costs more than the console itself. So your gaming experience will be similar to what you experience with whatever size HDD you have in your console, only now you have much, much more room. In using it, I haven’t noticed any heat issues, and the drive itself is quiet. Bottom line: The WD P10 is an easy way to add 3TB of storage for your Xbox game library. While not an SSD, it is fast for an external mechanical drive, and its sturdy case keeps the drive protected, quiet, and cool with an aesthetic to match well to any Xbox One model. The Game Pass code is an added bonus as well.

It’s more or less just a drive but it’s aesthetically pleasing with the X or S and if it’s going to be out with the Xbox it might as well look good

Great for Xbox series X. Doesn't do the enhanced games but works quickly for the rest of the games.
