Its small, not loud or annoying in any way. It also has decently fast speeds. For the price it is definitely worth it being an SSD.

Bought it for use on my PS5. Found out quickly it works on it, but only allows you to save PS4 games on it. I decided to use it for my gaming laptop instead. Fast load times on PC but would not recommend for PlayStation 5.

Great Storage for Console or on the go

The P40 1tb ssd is the perfect extension of your Xbox or Playstation console. It's also compatible just as an external drive on your PC depending on how you format the storage. It's nice that you can use the drive with either console or PC without having to buy a separate model. This thing is lightning quick with a nvme drive inside. I ran a few tests on PC and it was as fast as can be expected. It comes with a usb c connection which you want to use for the best transfer speeds but it also comes with a handy usb c to usb a converter if you have a laptop or pc that doesn't have a usb c port. Note that your speeds with going through usb a are going to be limited by the throughput of that port. Size wise its very small and could easily fit in your pocket for storage on the go. The cord seems be a respectable length I wasn't put off by it or excited by it, its the length I was expecting. Really all you will need to do is plug in the drive to your console of choice or PC and format it to be used with that system and off you go. 1tb storage on a nvme ssd over usb-c this is about as good as it gets as far as external storage without replacing the actual ssd inside your pc or gaming console.

This is the fastest external SSD I've used to date, and also the smallest. This is basically a high performance WD black internal NVMe SSD in a really slick external case. The drive feels light, but still rugged in the hand. RGB lighting on the case is a nice touch as well. The size makes it easy to carry in a pants pocket, or small pocket in a backpack. Includes both USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables, so you are covered for older and newer ports. Benchmarks on my PC show ~1000 MB/s read/write, but my PC doesn't support the latest USB 3.2 2x2 that this drive supports, so I expect speeds on a newer machine to be even faster. That being said, the ~1000 MB/S is the fastest I have ever seen on my PC for any external device. I did try installing a game on the drive and played and did not experience any noticeable lag compared to when playing on on internal SSD. So this drive definitely performs the job it's advertised to. To top it all off, the drive comes with a 5-year warranty, this means WD has made these drives to last. Easy choice if you want as superfast external drive for games or anything else.

The WD Black P40 is fast and ultra slim portable drive with some added features. The P40 is not exactly a step up from the P50, but more of a smaller version with some added LED lights. The P40 features an NVMe USB 3.2 Gen 2X2 with speeds up to 2000MB/s, these speeds are definitely questionable considering I was never able to reach even half that, but more on that later. The casing is much smaller this time around, which makes it easier to carry with you. The case is made of a shock proof housing that can protect it from certain drops. This drive no longer has air vents built in, which hasn’t been an issue because this drive doesn’t get anywhere near as hot as the P50 does. The box also includes a USB-C to USB-C cable, which is more than double the length of the P50’s cable. There is also a USB-C to USB-B adapter included as well. The P40 has a few new features this time around, including 2 built-in LED strips on the bottom of the drive. The lights can be customized, and they add a nice illuminating glow to the surface where its placed. The drive also comes with preinstalled software called “the dashboard”. With the software you are able to monitor your read/write speeds with a useful performance chart, as well as check the health of your drive, the current temperature, and customize the LED lights on the drive. While the drive is compatible with both PC and Mac, this part only works with PC. As for the performance of the drive, I am pleased with how well it performs. While it claims it can reach speeds of up to 2000MB/s, my speeds on my PC peaked at 642MB/s. Granted, this is mostly due to the fact that my motherboard doesn’t fully support the latest speeds. But when I plugged it into my MacBook pro with thunderbolt 4, I was able to see some major increase in speeds. I downloaded Overwatch 2 directly to the drive along with the program to run it...It performs flawlessly. The drive never gets that hot, not to mention I can switch over to my desktop on the fly. Overall, I am very pleased with the P40 drive. It’s not exactly an upgrade from the earlier model (the P50), but I don’t think WD was trying to make it one. It does have the potential to reach 2000MB/s, but keep in mind that’s only if you have a motherboard that supports the latest version. The small size makes it easy to carry around with you, and the LED lights give it a unique and satisfying look. The dashboard software gives you great insight on the performance of the drive, as well as customizing options. The one and only complaint I have, I wish they would’ve added some small rubber feet on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around on the desk. Other than that, I think this is a great drive and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new gaming drive.

i am literally in love with this

BEAUTIFUL piece of equipment. I bought this about a month ago so that I could put "heavy" games on it while still using my laptop for school, and it works like a charm. For context, I installed BG3 directly onto my laptop and even on the lowest graphic settings there was enough lag that I couldn't play reliably. I moved it to the SSD and there was an immediate difference - I was even able to increase graphic settings without affecting performance, which rocks. I also have at least 60 GB worth of pictures, videos, and documents on the SSD in addition to another CPU-intensive game and a few lighter games, and I've had no problems so far. I have a USB C port in my computer, so in terms of read speed, there haven't been any issues there either. Aside from how the SSD works, physically it is lovely. It's just as small and light as advertised, actually fits into my pocket, AND has RGB lighting that can be customized or turned off. The SSD can get pretty hot when being used, but you can monitor the temperature using the app/dashboard. I personally use a laptop cooling pad to keep it (and my laptop) cool, but that's more of a precautionary measure and not one that's necessary. It is also incredibly quiet - the cooling pad is louder. All in all, 10/10 would recommend to literally anyone, as it is well worth the price and delivers exactly what promises.

    Great SSD Game Drive!

The Western Digital 1TB Portable SSD WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive is a great external storage drive if you’re looking for some extra storage space which you can actually play your games off of without any sort of loss of quality or extended load times. I was previously using a more standard external hard drive with my laptop because the internal drive was not big enough for some of the bigger games like Call of Duty. After plugging the drive in for the first time (I opted to use the USB adapter that was included to plug into a standard USB port on my laptop since I am using my USB-C port for a separate USB hub), the drive was immediately recognized by my Windows-based system and I noticed the dashboard software installer was included on the drive. I went ahead and installed it and I must say I really like the layout. The device’s RGB lighting can be controlled through the dashboard software and they even include a link there to easily download Acronis True Image software in case you need to clone another drive onto the new game drive. Unfortunately for me, the drive I was previously using was also being used as a general storage drive and all I wanted to transfer to the new drive was my game files. After unsuccessfully trying to transfer them over, I finally decided to simply download and install them directly to the drive but this was not the fault of the drive itself or even the software that is included. After installing my games to this new drive and testing them out, I was very impressed and happy with the performance. Great load times, no lagging, basically everything I expected from a dedicated game drive. Overall, the Western Digital 1TB Portable SSD WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive is a great external storage game drive and I highly recommend it!

Very Fast External SSD Drive but...

The Western Digital Black P40 external ssd retails for $149.99 usd. This ssd drive is very fast. It says on the box that its read and write speeds are up to 2000 mb/s. But during my bench mark tests, I got half that with the usb cables that came with it. Thats still plenty fast though compared to most external ssd's on the market. I hooked it up to my Macbook pro and did some tests by editing some videos with Final Cut Pro X and I had no problems with it lagging and it had very short rendering times. I also hooked it up to my Xbox Series X and the big game file transfers only took a couple of minutes. But unfortunately, you can not play games from this external drive. So, in my honest opinion, it's pretty much useless unless you want to just store games on it. For Xbox, you have to purchase one of the Card drives they recommend. The casing for this drive is very nice looking and very sturdy. The shock resistance is rated to take a drop just over 6 ft. I'm not going to test this. The LED light on the out side are pretty cool. And with it hooked up to a PC, you can change the lights and patterns. Overall, this is a great SSD drive with very fast transfers. But I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to use it on the Xbox Series X/S or the PS 5 for playing games unless you just want to store games on it.
