Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the P40 Game Drive's performance, storage capacity, and ease of use, frequently praising its fast load times and compact size. Many appreciate the RGB lighting and compatibility with multiple gaming platforms. While some mention the drive can get warm during use and that the price point is a bit high, the positive feedback on its speed and functionality outweighs these concerns.

The Western Digital Black P40 is an NVMe drive packaged up in a rugged aluminum case. It sits at about 4.25 inches long, just over 2 inches wide and just over 1/2 inch thick. It comes with a 2 foot USB-C to USB-C cord and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. The USB-C port on the drive is a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. This gives it up to 20 Gbps of transfer speed. The NVMe drive is rated at 2000 MBps of read at 1950 MBps of write. The small instruction booklet includes basic instructions to connect it to a PC, PS5 or an Xbox Series X/S. I connected it to my Xbox and it recognized the additional storage and asked me some questions as to how I wanted to use the drive. I wanted it for game storage and let my Xbox reformat the drive for this purpose. I was able to transfer about 200 GB of games to the drive to free up my internal storage and it was pretty peppy. This worked great for games that I don't play often. So it is a good archive solution, but I could not play my games directly from this external storage device. The games I was playing had to be installed on the internal storage of the Xbox. This P40 has two RGB bars on the underside at the two long edges. What I wasn't expecting is that the lights come on regularly while my Xbox is sleeping. I set my Xbox in sleep mode so that I can start it up easily as most people typically do. But that means that the USB port switches on and off periodically and it was a distraction while I'm in the same room. I was slightly concerned that since my Xbox formatted the drive, I wouldn't be able to change the RGB settings. I went looking for the WD_Black Dashboard. I couldn't find it but I did find the Western Digital Dashboard (no Black in the name). Once I had that installed, the drive was recognized and I had access to a few utilities including one to disable the RGB. Since I had already transferred everything back to my Xbox's internal storage, I used the Windows Disk Management tool to format the drive to NTFS. That happened way quicker than I was expecting and I tested with the USB-A adapter and achieved a 280 MBps write speed. Without the adapter, I was getting closer to 450 MBps on a USB-C port. With all of those quirks now understood, I am more likely to use this WD_Black P40 drive as a PC Gaming drive or just as a general media storage device as opposed to a console gaming drive.

The WD-Black P40 Game Drive that can be used for Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X includes 1 Terabyte of storage. In addition to this, it is a Solid State Drive. The processing times are quick. This portable drive uses a type C-to-A cable, includes a quick install guide, and can store images, videos, and various files. You are able to plug this into a PC, Playstation or an Xbox. I own them all and the drive worked great on each one. This drive is high performing even under high stress downloads from Steam. Temperature never went over 38 Celcius when multi tasking. The loading time of the portable drive is faster than the speed of hard disc drive. It's nice to a see a portable drive that is a solid state. This would make a nice gift for the traveling college student, business professional, and or gamer in your life. Pros: Solid State Uploading speeds Compact Travel Friendly Stores 1 Terabyte Cable included Quick Start Guide Light weight Fast speed away from home

Fast To Read, Fast To Write, Ready To Play!

This is exactly what I needed to pair with my PC that has an internal HDD where I store and run all my PC games. It's advertised as having read & write speeds up to 2000 mb/s which during tests gets up there closer to 1800 mb/s for read and up to 1600 mb/s for write but it doesn't achieve that during play so not to be mislead I installed a few games on it and reached speeds a little over 100 mb/s for installing my games and then close to 400 mb/s for loading my games which is already a giant leap up from the dedicated HDD on my PC where if I'm lucky get up to 50 MB/s. I didn't notice a huge difference when loading up Planet Coaster but immediately but I saved at least a minute on load time which is still huge for me. Speed isn't the only great thing about this drive though. It also has its own dedicated control panel to customize RGB and connects with third party RGB control panels which is awesome because I have Razer accessories I use so I can connect to Razer Chroma and have all my devices in sync. The control panel can also tell you the life of the SSD by percentage so if you write to it very often you can visualize how quickly those cells are degenerating. The SSD does use USB type C but it comes with a USB A adapter in case your PC doesn't have an input for type C. I didn't try the SSD on my PS5 but it would require formatting and the instructions for connecting to next gen console did come in the box albeit very minimal instructions. Overall, it's a great external SSD to store and play games from with fast read and write times.

Fast light and rugged external drive

WD Black P40 gaming drive Very fast external drive. Was very simple to set up with my windows 11 laptop. Did a quick format read 1 TB in Dashboard utility. The lights only work with windows which does not bother me. You are able to turn it mostly off if you don't want it on. The software loaded very fast. It would be as fast as my laptop drive if it didn't have the newer gen 4 NVME drive The WD drive comes with cables to adapt to full size usb type A. but my Laptop had usb type C in which I saw the fast transfer speeds. To keep my laptop drive empty I moved all my files over. Big file sizes are no problem for this drive. I had Forza 6 switched over to the drive and loading the game from the drive was still really fast. Downloading most files that I use was very fast, almost all under 1 min. I did enable trim as recommended by windows but have not long term experience with drive problems. The only concern I saw was the potential to damage the USB type C connection. But other than that the drive is rugged, super fast and very portable without worry. Power draw while connected was nothing that made the laptop battery die any faster. I was happy to see the battery was not affected with excess power draw. Most new users will be happy with the speed increase for the external NON m.2 drive Hope everyone has trouble free usage from it. If not I like the 5 year warranty that WD provides with the drive. I have used WD before with zero drive failures so You may never Have to use it!

Speedy drive. Took about 10 minutes to transfer 110 Gb. Light up with colors on side. Decent price. Seems to be made well. Comes with a cord USB C to USB C, but does have an adapter to USB A

A Fast Drive with Thermal and Post-Prod Setbacks

The WD Black P40 Game Drive is essentially a portable NVME drive with a USB-C interface. If you know anything about NVME drives you'll know that they love to run HOT. Cooling of an NVME drive is very important for life cycle and performance. I immediately wanted to test the ability to edit videos off of this drive and decided to transfer 150GB of 4K footage to this, build an video timeline on it, and edit directly from it. Within 10 minutes of use this drive was running warm and at one point even hot to the touch. I am not sure how WD is cooling this NVME SSD but it isn't enough. I am concerned over time this drive will die or experience failures due to the heat. From a performance standpoint the drive responds fairly fast for an external SSD. Video recall within a non-linear editor is almost instant. I did experience some lag when really working with multiple timelines. When you load a game onto this and play it, you see almost no difference between the drive being installed in a PCIE slot or being USB-C which is good for this use case. Overall this drive has good potential for gaming and data storage however if you plan on doing any sort of multimedia large file recall and editing you should not be looking to use this drive. Also beware of the heat that this unit will produce if it is being heavily tasked.

I am using the WD_Black P40 Game drive on my Alienware m17 R5 laptop 6900HX as well as trying it on my AMD Ryzen 9 5900X personally built system. I cannot run a benchmark that will show the full speed of this drive as I have no computers with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 USB port on them, even though I thought I did. The best I can do is a consistent ~1000MBps CrystalDiskMark Read/Write benchmarks. I cannot show anything faster, so this would make it seem the same max speed as previous generations of around ~1050MBps. It is a great drive, but even with USB 4 port (USB C) on my Alienware laptop, it will not let me run the drive faster than 10Gbps, which throttles out around ~1000MBps. I have installed a few games that benefit from SSD speeds, like FS2020, some Assassin’s Creed titles and other large game installs (150GB+). I did do a raw file copy test from one of my externals SSDs to this one and was able to move about 250GB in under 10 minutes. This was by no means its top speed, but incredibly fast. Even though my internal SSD on my laptop is fast, I noticed no real difference in loading times or gameplay with anything I tried it on. I just wish I could get the full benefit of its 2000MBps speeds. It’s quick, reliable, and I’ve owned a number of WD drives throughout the years. They do not tend to die on me, the tech just ends up getting outdated before the drives fail.

Easy to use, plug and play device. Have it connected to my PS4 and it really boosts game play/loading speed. Downside.............. takes up a vital USB port but sacrifices have to be made.
