Great replacement for my old Yamaha

I got this to replace my old Yamaha HTR-5550, which has to be more than 15 years old and still worked fine. This receiver is pretty close to perfect for my setup and has some great features that I didn't know existed in A/V Receivers. I love the wireless connectivity to my network, five HDMI's, the multi-zone capabilities and setup. I can stream Pandora, SiriusXM and Spotify directly through my receiver and it displays the artist and song title. It also has Net Listening which streams various music from internet sites. Im still playing around with that feature, but i found some nice jazz channels through it. It has Dolby Atmos, AirPlay and Bluetooth connections. Setup couldn't be easier if you are a beginner or more experienced with connecting your system. Download the app, answer some questions about your setup and then the app walks you through the rest of the installation. It has on-screen setup if you connect the receiver to your TV with an HDMI cable and has an ARC (HDMI) connection that can control other devices with the Yamaha remote. You can also download the MusicCast app and control your receiver using your phone or tablet. I deducted one star because unlike my old Yamaha, it doesn't have a switched AC input that powers on an additional device when the receiver powers on. I have a wireless setup that I had plugged into that outlet to turn on my rear wireless speakers, so now i have to manually power it on each time. I guess once they release the MusicCast speakers, I can use that as opposed to the Bose speakers I use now. All in all, this is a fantastic setup and would have gotten five stars if it had the AC input that I need. That might not be a big deal to some, but it was a necessary feature for me. Pros: - AirPlay, Bluetooth, Wifi connections - Can connect to SiriusXM, Pandora and Spotify, among others - Easy setup with onscreen programming - Dolby Atmos - MusicCast app Just to name a few pros Cons - Need an AC outlet to power additional components

This is a great receiver, with lots of features, for a great price. Whats in the box: not much, but you don't need much. The receiver, remote, manuals, microphone for auto-calibration, AM/FM antennae. Setup: As easy as any other receiver. Plug in your TV, speakers and any input devices that you have. Once you power on the receiver, setup is easy, the graphic interface makes using the menu a breeze. I used the auto-calibration with the microphone, and it works about as well as any other receiver does. It works well enough, but isn't perfect by any means and a manual calibration with a DB microphone is still the best. Features: Pretty jam packed. Able to use Atmos sound if you have a room that can set up for it. Many network type inputs available as well, such as airplay. Programmable buttons on the front, or the remote, for frequently used settings. Such as a game system, watching a movie, listening to music. You can change your audio/visual settings and save them as a type of quick recall setting. Sound quality: For what you pay, excellent. Once you spend the time to manually calibrate it, the sound gets that much better. Overall: nice A/V receiver with lots of features, for a nice price.

I am not an Audiophile but this 7.2 Channel receiver is awesome. I did find enough speakers just to hear what it would be like and I was absolutely blown away with its superb sound. I have had several receivers in the past but this one by far is the best. Some of its features include: Wifi connectivity Bluetooth Conectivity Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Full 4K Ultra HD HDMI support YPAO (Room Sound Optimizer) Voice control device enabled (ie. Echo or Echo Dot) HDMI with HDCP 2.2 (5 in/ 2 out) 2 Audio Optical inputs/ 1 Coaxial/ 2 RCA 1 AV Component Video Input 1 AV RCA Video Input Wireless Speaker connectivity App Control Phono input 1 USB Input 1 AUX Audio out It took me a day or 2 to get the speaker configuration right or the way I wanted it to sound. But I'm happy I got this receiver.

Yamaha has always been my go to receiver. From the power to the clean lines and sleek software, you can't go wrong. I won't go over the specs since a quick click gives you all the detailed info you need. From the clean poer to multizone audio this is a fantastic whole home audio system that gets you up to speed with the current 4k UHD Atmos system. 630w will shake the walls and remind the neighbors how much you love clean and crisp sound. Menu and OS is easy to operate, even for the novice. Set-up mic makes installation a breeze and the simple remote takes out all the guess work. This is a excellent mid entry receiver for that rockin home theater you have been looking for. Hoenstly you can never go wrong with Yamahas receivers.

This is a great centerpiece for my home theater. That not only works, but works well. Set up can be a little timely with running wires and trying to hide them, adjusting sound settings to your likings. Yamaha helps out with this one with auto room correction YPAO microphone. It has 5 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs and I use them all. I do wish it had one HDMI in on the front. But it dose have an USB port on the front. My favorite option is the dual-zone. So with the 2 HDMI out puts every thing I can do on my main TV I can just as easily do on my out side TV. So one apple TV can now be seen on two TV's in different rooms at the same time. The included FM/AM antenna works very well. I'm picking up more stations than my last receiver. The new remote design helps keep liquids and dirt out of the button crevices. But is super long. And I wish it have each input as a button. You have to cycle through all the inputs till you find the one you want. Not that big of a deal but it is nice to just jump to the you need. The on screen menu is very easy to navigate. I didn't have any trouble finding the options I needed. All in all if you care about sound this RV receiver with surround sound will beat out any sound bar any day of the week. I am very happy with this unit.

Yamaha Receiver with almost all that 2018 offers!

This receiver replaced a 2001 (!!!) RCA 5.1 home theater receiver in my main living space. Needless to say, I had that piece of kit for a long time and it was very familiar with it. So far I'm loving the new one. The remote included with the Yamaha is a little unwieldy and the buttons don't press easily, but there are a number of things you definitely need the remote for. I'm hoping now that things are all set up my family can switch to using a Logi universal remote to control everything. Setup was relatively easy, like others I had a 30 minute pause to download new firmware and then I ended up running the microphone based speaker setup 3 times before things were all adjusted correctly, since each time it seemed to tweak things closer. Other nice surprises were the immediate recognition of the ARC (audio return channel) from my TV when using the tuner and then amplifying those sounds. Built-in Spotify and airplay/Bluetooth are also things I would expect from a receiver in this price range that works well here. Slightly offputting was the omission of an actual manual. With a piece of equipment like this I'm likely to sit down and read the manual cover to cover to see what it can do, and that's not an option here, I had to download a PDF and read it on my iPad. Things I love: Build quality is excellent Speaker and rear connections are outstanding 630 watts is plenty of power for almost any space A/B zones for more speakers and a secondary display output for another tv/projector All types of modern surround modes and then some Yamaha goes overboard with the ability to tweak and customize your sound and speaker levels. Factory included option for wireless rear speakers Multicast audio for multiple brands Things I didn't love: No manual clunky remote limited front inputs no straightforward EQ Cannot detach ac cable could possibly use one more HDMI input Still need Yamaha remote for some functions as opposed to universal included remote isn't touchscreen/smart Overall this is a GREAT home theater receiver and I love it as the new center of my living room entertainment. This receiver highlighted how poor my existing speakers were that I had to go out and buy new ones just to justify the sound coming from this receiver! I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

    Upgraded from older Yamaha

I upgraded my old 5.1 Yamaha receiver to this 7.1 4K HDR version. I'm loving it! I've had a decent amount of luck with Yamaha receivers and this was a good upgrade. The 4K HDR passthrough works great. I spent longer than I should have trying to figure out why HDR wasn't working but it ended up being that I just didn't have HDR enabled on the HDMI port I plugged the receiver into. After that was switched it worked like gangbusters with my AppleTV 4K and my PS4 Pro. Everything sounds great. The newer onscreen menus are great. My old Yamaha had a really basic menu screen. The auto speaker adjustment microphone worked really well the first time I used it. I intend to buy new speakers to get the most out of this system but the old speakers I was using with my 5.1 system worked great. There was 1 setting that was mentioned in the setup guide for using 6 ohm speakers. It told me to refer to the manual for how to change this setting but I couldn't find a manual. I ended up needing to download the mobile app that gives you setup instructions and got a digital version of the manual from there. That was my only real issue with the setup process. Everything still sounds good with the older speakers. I assume, spending some money on a decent set of speakers will be even better. I'd recommend this receiver. It works well with my 4K HDR TV and devices. It sounds good. Setup was somewhat easy.

Setup is super easy if you have set up a stereo system before. If you haven’t, the instructions are well written and very easy to understand and simple. This has FIVE HDMI inputs!! You can hook up all kinds of gadgets, DVD, BlueRay Gaming systems, etc. Has 2 HDMI outputs, one of which is an ARC and the other is regular. This is great for newer (ARC) and older (regular) televisions, or set it up to have two televisions hooked up to it and watch the same content on both. Works great in my large family room! It has built in WiFi so that you can stream music from compatible apps like Spotify and Pandora. Bluetooth input and output so that you can hook up your phone or computer to listen to music and can use wireless speakers, which makes it much neater without all the wires. Compatible with 4K Ultra HD televisions for a sharp clear picture. I haven't set up my Home Theater projector yet, but it has all the capabilities for me to hook it up.

I recently installed this unit to replace our existing 4K receiver (Pioneer VSX-70). My main interest was in having a proper AV receiver through which I could run all of our video inputs while taking advantage of the latest features like Atmos. This Yamaha unit has not disappointed. There is no apparent video degradation when pushing all of the video sources through the unit (an issue that I had with my prior unit) and the interfaces are easy to use. I did take advantage of the YPAO setup process - and it did seem to do a good job of adjusting the outputs to our living room's acoustics. Most notably, our ceiling-mounted rear speakers never seemed to be quite balanced in the prior system. That is no longer an issue with this unit. In all, this system exceeds my expectations...

This Yamaha receiver is a great addition to anyone's home theater system. Very easy to setup and has most of the bells and whistles your average user needs. Apple Airplay is a great feature allowing you to easily stream from any iOS device. The sound quality is very clear and crisp and sound great in 5.1 or 7.2. If you are looking for a solid receiver for your home theater setup, look no further.

    Another Solid Yamaha Receiver

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

What can I say. It's a Yamaha. This is my third Yamaha receiver over the past 20 or so years, and every one has performed flawlessly. When it's time to upgrade, I sometimes think of trying another brand, but I like the Yamaha sound and the solid reliability. This receiver is another winner, in my view. It has basically everything you would want in a mid-priced receiver, and the setup was quite easy (and fun). I found the setup menu relatively easy to navigate and I really like how easy it is to change the names of inputs and the set up "scenes" for various sources (e.g., blu-ray player, satellite box, etc.) The other thing i like is that in my experience the Yamaha receivers do not run too hot, temperature wise, You can run them for several hours and put your hand on the top and they are still only lukewarm. My one beef would be the YPAO that sets up the speakers and subwoofer for your room configuration. It gave me some weird results (setting some of my speakers to "large" when they are clearly "small" and setting the subwoofer too low), and I probably could have remedied this if I tried running it again, but instead I just did it manually with a sound meter. But frankly, I tend to trust my ears anyway when all is said and done. I have had the receiver now for about two weeks and the sound is a definite upgrade from my previous Yamaha receiver, which is probably a model a two below this range. I would definitely recommend this product to others looking for a solid receiver at a reasonable price.

    Out of Date

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am getting Roku error messages that say my HDMI cables need to be changed. So I bought new cables but it didn't help. It turns out that my old Pioneer SC-71 won't pass through at the same speed as the components that I have hooked up to it can do. So I started shopping for a new receiver and pretty much decided on the Yamaha RX-V685. This is a great receiver, however, I decided not to buy a receiver that is already out of date. The HDMI standard that most available components comply with is HDMI 2.0 which can handle speeds up to 18gbps for 4K and 4K UHD. The new standard, which is fast approaching is HDMI 2.1 which can handle speeds up to 48gbps in order to handle the new resolutions of 8K and more. According to my research, this receiver will never be fully compliant with the 2.1 HDMI standard although it will have some of the enhancements that come with HDMI 2.1 standard such as eARC. As fast as new components are adopting the new HDMI standard this receiver will be out of date by the end of this year or certainly by next year. It doesn't make much sense to have HDMI components on both sides of the receiver that are HDMI 2.1 compliant and have the receiver be a bottleneck. Therefore I decided to limp along with what I have until the new fully HDMI 2.1 compliant model comes along. There should be one within a year. I don't want to be in the same situation that I am now in a year. This will impact your use of media such as BluRay, streaming from sites such as Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon that are working on streaming higher resolution media, and especially gaming. And for some it already is.
