I'll echo the experience of some of the other reviewers here. There are many great things about the V6A, but overall it feels like it's only 75% finished - it demonstrates a lot of glitchy behaviors that make it very hard to live with. This may be fixed in future firmware releases, but if you're using this for more than one device, it's probably a bit too early to buy this one.
The good parts - the sound and surround processors are really great. There was a very noticeable increase in the quality of sound imaging after changing from my previous AVR (an earlier Yamama model). The new physical design is nice - the status display is smaller than on previous models which is actually better in reducing the light from the receiver in the viewing room. When you change inputs, the name pops up briefly in larger print, then drops to a small size. I like it.
The bad parts - there is support for many HDMI formats, but switching between them is haphazard and slow - it can lose sync for 20 sec, which is long enough that my TV (a new LG OLED 65") thinks that there's no input. Video switching and HDMI support in general seems to be good for consoles (I have XBOX Series X and PS/4 Pro), but my Xfinity X1 box (the newest one with no antenna connection) basically does not cooperate - if switching from any other source, it's dead unless you physically pull the HDMI connector, then plug it back in. AppleTV4K has always been a poor HDMI neighbor (it often feels like the Settings are more like recommendations than constraints on what the box does) - even if you set it NOT to output in Dolby Vision, certain sources (like The Mandalorian) cause a DV prompt to show up on the screen. If you're using this just for gaming, I think that works, but trying to get Xfinity video AND sound working can take 5 minutes of dinking around and unplugging things. Not acceptable.
Worse yet, I was only able to get to this sorry state by turning off CEC everywhere possible. Without doing so, the receiver will occasionally flip to other inputs, particularly the XBox. Probably triggered by the same problem that's causing the long mode switches. With CEC on, the Apple TV tries to engage Dolby Vision and then all the other inputs are scrambled.
I expect this will all be remedied with a future FW rev. I received the unit with FW 1.13 which was much worse than FW 1.23. I purchased this unit during the holiday season, so had I had more time to play with this than the normal return period, and another 6 weeks for additional updates.
But the frustration of having to run with no CEC and still have many problem is just too much of a risk, so I returned this unit tonight. My previous system with earlier Yamaha AVR and 1080P Sony generally needed only the receiver remote for one-touch functionality. I may experiment with taking the sources to the TV and handling sound via ARC. In that model, the new features of the V6A are not really useful. This unit will be worth checking out again when the interoperability issues are better.

Poor HDMI Connectivity Make this Not Recommended

Needs a firmware update to address issues with hdmi/earc switching and audio dropouts. Very frustrating. Audio quality and adjustments are numerous, and if you are just using this for that or maybe a phono player you are set, but try adding a DVD player or a streamer like a Nvidia Shield and you are bound for trouble. Maybe Yamaha will address these problems maybe not, Google for more info. Also know that most controls are only easily accessible via the app. That's not a slam, but just know that the front panel has almost no controls & the remote interface even on a TV is very cryptic with abbreviations -it all works, just takes more brain power to figure out than it should. Could be a very good unit if the hdmi connectivity is corrected, but if you have a lot of peripherals you will have trouble.

I've been waiting for these 8K AVR's to ship from Yamaha and Denon this year. So far the releases have been all over the place in terms of being able to find them; but finally Yamaha's first 2020 receiver's are here and they don't disappoint. The amount of features this thing has is awesome being able to manually being able to assign different HDMI ports to different to HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 and later this winter to 2.1 is a game changer for me, I have a lot of video game systems and gear that doesn't always work with the auto feature that most amps have so this is great hassle free way to completely be in control of my entertainment. Also one of the biggest disappointments of Denon's 2020 amps is it didn't support 1440p 120hz for Xbox One X/PC playback, I'm happy to report that the RX-V6A does support it and it looks and plays great. The sound and picture is amazing out of this thing, really impressed and glad I waited for Yamaha, I can't wait to see the HDMI 2.1 features when they deliver the update later this year for PS5/XboxSX.

I purchased this Yamaha receiver after my Onkyo had given up the ghost. First impressions were very good. I love the sleek modern and simplistic design that is lacking in pretty much all other receivers (especially in this price range). Feature wise, this thing is about average. It has many of the things you would come to expect from a receiver in 2020 (music streaming over wifi, bluetooth, 4K HDR, etc) but it is lacking in a few departments. Firstly, the amplifier section is average. At this price I was expecting it to perform a little better. My out going Onkyo had a slight advantage in sound even though it was only half the price of this unit. Secondly, there is no separate Subwoofer crossover control for the LFE channel. I always like to set my sub crossover around 80Hz as it blends nicely with my Klipsch towers. I believe the sub crossover is set depending on the crossover settings for your front speakers (but there is no way to tell and no way to see what it is set to by the unit). Finally, I have a lot of issues with ARC/eARC. The receiver has trouble with the HDMI handshake with my Samsung QLED TV. Sometime I can get the ARC to work and sometime it refuses to. I have to unplug both the TV and the Receiver a few times before it starts working again. I'm not sure if this is isolated to my TV/Receiver combination but I did not have this issue with my Onkyo. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase. Movies and Music sound great (although it could be better with a higher end Denon) and the design and features are adequate at this price. I'm hoping future firmware updates don't just bring HDMI 2.1 with 8K/4K@120Hz but also bring more features and overall improvements.

We liked it so much we bought two!Everything works great! Very easy to connect DVD player, Set Top Box, Tivo, Game Console! Music Cast is also GREAT and plays whatever you want anywhere you have speakers from just about any platform. These replaced the two Yamaha RX-2065s that were fried from a lightning strike at our home. Great sound and Quality for the money we paid $599.00 for the first one when we went back to BestBuy get a second one they were sold out and when they were available again they were $649.00 The only thing we don't like is the display is way too
small!!

Overall great receiver. I loved the sound from this receiver but I had to return it as most 2020's receivers have a faulty chipset and cannot manage the most recent HDMI format for next gen gaming consoles. I also needed to be able to display my content onto a TV and a videoprojector but this receiver comes with only one HDMI output. I tried all kind of HDMI splitters and switches... impossible to make it work. I switched for a Denon and the Yamaha add a way better sound. If you don't need 8k and you only need one HDMI output, this is a great receiver. Otherwise, you'll need something else or wait 2021's units if you can.

After spending some time with this unit i know i made the right choice. This is a feature packed unit at an excellent price point. Lots of reviewers are complaining about the menus and user interface but it is no more difficult to navigate than any other brand out there. If you want easy buy a soundbar! Coming from a mid 2000's era Onkyo unit the Yamaha interface is perfectly fine. If you want to be excited about watching movies again go this route, audition some speakers and get started in putting together a home entertainment system that'll have all your friends coming to your house for every event!

Quality seems great so far. Beautiful design and the audio is better to my previous Onkyo. Bought to use along with my 4K Samsung TV at 120hz when using the Xbox series X. Unfortunately, this is not yet available and it’s supposed to be available on a later date with an update.

I bought this to replace a 12-year-old Denon receiver that I was pretty happy with, but I wanted a receiver with a phono pre-amp and line in, which few receivers had 12 years ago. I didn't expect the dramatic improvement in sound that the Yamaha offers. I mainly use it to listen to classical and jazz recordings, some recent SACDs, but most are older CDs and LPs, plus a few mp3s and even old cassettes. This receiver has settings appropriate for any of these sources. I am especially impressed with the "enhancement" setting which dramatically improves mp3s and cassettes that had compressed frequency range. But it is also very impressive with high end recordings. With SACDs I use the "pure direct" setting which provides a highly accurate reproduction of the original recording. I don't use this receiver much for movies and videos, but it has done a wonderful job with streaming movies in 4k and 5.1 or 5.1.2 sound. As many online reviews have concluded, you have to pay a lot more to get anything better than this receiver. The only possible drawback I can think of is that this is a very complicated piece of equipment with so many options and settings that are not always easy to figure out. In order to fully understand them, you really need the complete manual, which is only available online. The brief quick-start guide that comes with the receiver hardly explains any of the options. That means that even a month after getting this receiver, I still refer to the nearly 400-page manual several times a week to refresh my memory as to what a given setting actually does.

I've had this for awhile so I wanted to get a few miles on it before reviewing. I'll start with the negatives and some of them may be my misunderstanding of the online manual. When using eArc with my Sony TV I do get some audio cutting out when using Sony's onboard apps. I don't know if it's the tv or the receiver. I will be hooking up an optical audio cable soon but I usually use my Firestick over the tv's apps. I have added Atmos speakers to my ceiling and they sound awesome but since adding the Atmos speakers I have not been able to bi-amp my front speakers properly. When I do the sound level is almost half on the bi-amped speakers. Again, could be a setting issue on my part but I tried several ( I guess I need to get with Yamaha support). I hate the remote. The old style remote was much more user friendly. Even programming this remote is more of a pain then the one on the less expensive Yamaha receiver I returned for this one. To confirm I am getting an Atmos signal I have to go into the options button on the remote ( which does report accurately) but Atmos never shows up on the receivers front display. Now the good. I have a middle of the road system. I think it sounds amazing when watching movies or a live football game. Love it! There is plenty of power to drive my speakers and I like the appearance of the receiver. Take your time with the settings because this thing has way more control settings then what I even really know what to do with. It can be a bit intimidating for some people. I mess with the settings a little each weekend and still discover new options. I don't have a game console connected to it but I do have Bluray and a Fire Stick and they play well with the receiver. You do have to use your Spotify phone app to play it on the receiver. It works great but I would have rather had the app built in. I have not had any major issues as some of the other reviewers have noted. I did have to do a firmware update via USB but it went smoothly.

It's not perfect but its a pretty decent AV receiver. It was time to replace my old Yamaha audio receiver which finally gave up the ghost, the power section had issues and kept turning off. So I wanted to get a replacement that handled HDMI switching which my old one did not do and settled on this one. First thing I noticed out of the box was how much lighter in weight this one was compared to my old receiver. I don't view this as a plus though . I see that as lesser power driving capabilities but I'm going to assume all the brands are lightening up in this area unless you want to go real high end of the scale. I'd consider this one in the mid range of the Yamaha line. It seems plenty loud enough but all the sound fields seem a little flat and tinny to me but I haven't adjusted any of the built in eq settings yet. I'm hoping I can tweak them a little more to my liking yet. It only has one optical digital input which is a con for me but I made it work. I'd like to see at least one more. I used that 1 optical input as the sound feed from my TV for the rare times I use the antenna signal from the TV tuner or for anything I would input directly to the TV inputs. By doing this I was forced to use an analog audio input from my 400 disc CD jukebox, yes I still occasionally listen to Cd's,so a second optical input would have been very nice for that. The setup menus I felt were ok, nothing pretty to look at but functional. A few settings are not very clear in what they do unless you dig into the manual so a note on the screen would be helpful on a few of these settings. The full manual has to be downloaded online, no paper copy, not a surprise these days. My biggest issue ,which caused a few days of hair pulling is related to the HDMI inputs 1-3 on the receiver. My ATT Uverse DVR set-top box was initially connected to HDMI input 1. EVERY time the system was powered up the uverse box would soft reset itself and you had to wait for it several minutes to come back up again. I tried changing cables, forcing a hard reset of the Uverse stb so it reloaded its firmware. I tried turning off the HDMI control and ARC functions of the Yamaha receiver ,all were no help. I was thinking it was just a coincidence and maybe the box had just failed and was about to call ATT for a replacement. I tried one last thing. I moved the cable to HDMI input 4 on the Yamaha and voila , it worked normally. I'm not sure what is different about the HDMI inputs 1-3 on the receiver, I have to dig into the manual to see what it says, but those 3 inputs are grouped separately on the back of the receiver. But one thing is certain, ATT Uverse boxes do not play nice with them. For now I don't have anything connected to those 3 inputs.

I got this because I wanted something future proof and not super expensive. This seemed to check those boxes. I was coming from an old sony receiver and wanted something with atmos and hdmi 2.1. overall this has been a good receiver. As soon as you connect to internet you have a update. Setting up was easy enough. Sounds has been real good. The remote is just alright. A couple hiccups I had were it was playing atmos fine and then it just stopped. The source it was playing from support atmos. I ended up resetting the receiver and it took care of that issue. I also had an issue when using one of the scene buttons when you click it the device to that hdmi would just go blank. Again after a reset it fixed that. I am just waiting on the new update to unlock all the hdmi 2.1 features. Overall though this is a really solid receiver under 700 dollars.
