Customers are saying

Customers value the Pro Stylus for its ease of use, long battery life, and affordable price. Many appreciate its compatibility with iPads and the convenient magnetic attachment, while some found the weight and overall feel to be positive attributes. However, concerns were raised regarding the durability of the tip and the lack of pressure sensitivity for certain tasks. A few users also experienced lag in specific applications.

This is difficult to pair with my device. If it is pairing it isn't showing device name. Unfortunately, I wish it would be easier to pair.

A good, less expensive alternative to Apple Pencil

I have an iPad Pro from 2019 that I use for all of my work-related tasks at home. I have paired it with the Zagg Rugged Book Go keyboard case, which has worked flawlessly since I've had the iPad, as well as the second generation Apple Pencil. Apple products carry a premium price tag, and the Apple Pencil, as I am sure you know, is no different at $130. When I received the opportunity to review the Zagg Pro Stylus, a possible alternative to the Apple Pencil, I jumped on the opportunity. I utilized the Zagg Pro Stylus with the idea of comparing it to the venerable old Apple Pencil. My Zagg Pro Stylus came in a gray color, and just holding it demonstrates a key difference between it and the Apple Pencil. The Pro Stylus is lightweight and feels like it is made from some kind of aluminum. The second-generation Apple Pencil is the same weight, but feels like it is made entirely from plastic. The ends of the Pro Stylus are terminated in a plastic writing tip and a rubber capacitance tip, while the second-generation Apple Pencil just has the writing tip. The instructions say the Pro Stylus's capacitance tip is made for scrolling and selecting items on the iPad, and the writing tip is for, well, you know, writing. However, I was able to use the writing tip to scroll and select items on the iPad also, so I am assuming Zagg is giving users the ability to decide whether they would rather use the soft capacitance tip for browsing around on the iPad or the harder, plastic tip. The Pro Stylus does not charge like the second-generation Apple Pencil does. You can't just magnetically attach it to the side of the iPad and it won't charge itself (although it will magnetically attach, it just won't charge in that position). Instead, the top of the pencil that holds the rubber capacitance tip pulls up and there is a USB-C charging port there. The Pro Stylus comes with a short USB-C cable (no power supply) for charging it. The directions say that the Pro Stylus is already charged, just push the button located near the top and start using it. The Apple Pencil uses Bluetooth to connect to the iPad, but the Pro Stylus does not. At first, I went into the Bluetooth screen of the iPad, thinking I would have to go through the connection process, but the Pro Stylus does not show up there. No Bluetooth connection is needed. A cool function of the second-generation Apple Pencil is the ability to double-tap the barrel of it while writing, and it will switch to erase mode. Due to its lack of Bluetooth connection, the Pro Stylus doesn't have that function. However, as a writing/drawing device, it worked perfectly. Palm rejection on my iPad Pro was excellent, and tilting the Pro Stylus as different angles resulted in different writing thickness. When using the Apple Notes app, writing with the Pro Stylus at no angle resulted in a small, compact stroke. Tilting the Pro Stylus at varying angles resulted in broader, thicker strokes. Drawing within the Evernotes app was quite pleasant. My daughter, who is an accomplished artist, felt like the Pro Stylus held a slight edge over the second-generation Apple Pencil when it came to control during sketching. If I can give the greatest compliment possible to the Pro Stylus, it would be to say, "It just works." That may be oversimplified, but I love components that require nothing more than to turn them on and they do their job. The Pro Stylus is that way. I've had the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil lose connection at times, I've had the Apple Pencil not charge for whatever reason while attached to the iPad, but I didn't have any moments during my review period of the Pro Stylus where I thought, "Now, why isn't that working?" If you don't feel like dropping $130 on the second-generation Apple Pencil, the Zagg Pro Stylus is a less expensive alternative that will still give you the ability to write on the iPad and have a capacitance tip for scrolling. Highly recommended.

    Nice Apple Pencil substitute

Though I haven’t had owned or had hands on experience with an Apple Pencil 1 or 2, this is good enough without the expense of an Apple stylus. I have used it on drawing on the 6th/last generation ipad in the 9.7” size (2018 model), and it works well. Charging port easily revealed by pushing and pulling near the top of the eraser. My ipad didn’t have a screen protector so though I’m sure it can be screen protector friendly, just haven’t had the experience. Is does magnetically attract to a side of the ipad but it’s more beneficial to have this ipad in a case that has the accompanying space for a stylus pen as it doesn’t stay aligned on edge. Overall, it’s a good Apple Pencil substitute without breaking much of your wallet.

I'm developing a newfound appreciation for devices that simply work as intended without some kind of convoluted setup. Out of the box, the Zagg stylus works brilliantly. It has decent heft and length (about the size of an sharpened No.2 pencil), so wielding it with precision is trivially easy. The hard rubber or silicone tip has just the right amount of "give", meaning the screen will effortlessly register your presses strokes without having to apply excess force. The fixed nubs on the end of cheaper models usually take a considerable degree of pressure to register touch input, to the point where I've looked like I was trying to stab my iPad. The Zagg stylus, though, registers my strokes just like a pen would. The stylus can accommodate some really granular, fine settings, too, so you don't need to be worried about being limited to thick, messy lines when trying to write. There's also clearly some well-intentioned software tinkering designed to rectify wayward strokes, but I will say if you write lowercase sigma like I do, the stylus (or the iPad) will stubbornly keep attempting to fix your "mistake" by making the symbol a lowercase "o"! In most cases, though, especially with handwriting, the smoothing feature comes in handy. The stylus is magnetic, too, so you can just park it on your iPad if you need to quickly type out something with both hands. I teach statistics, and have tried to use the Whiteboard feature on Zoom and my iPad with varying degrees of success. Statistical formulae can get quite complicated, and it helps to write them out by hand if you're trying to study how all the parts for together and what each variable should represent. Most styli I've used haven't been up to the task. Lines are too thick to be useful, the tips don't accurately record input, or a too-short length makes your hand keep hitting the screen. The Zagg stylus has fixed all those problems. A student confirmed this for me yesterday. He couldn't read what I would write formerly, but didn't want to say anything because he was afraid I had an injured hand! He was amazed that in a few days, as he put it, I "learned to write". Kids. Anyway, strongly recommended for anyone who must write by hand while using an iPad. Worth the price.

Having never really used a stylus aside from my phone, I was happy to get one to use with my iPad. It feels just like a number 2 pencil. I do a little bit of photos hop in my spare time and I found that this stylus is really easy to use. It's great for editing pictures as well. All around good product.

    Average Stylus

The Zagg Pro Stylus is an average stylus. It’s got good weight and feels comfortable to “write” with on my Ipad Pro. I could not tell the difference using different tips. About 7 out 10 times it worked to reject my palm when writing. I’m not sure if it’s my palm hitting the Ipad first or it’s just not working. One thing that gave me a headache was understanding if the stylus was turned on. (It wont write on the Ipad if the stylus wasn’t turned on). Zagg should have the stylus LED turn green for on and red for off. But the lights just turn on and off not very clear. Hard to recommend this stylus to others with these issues.

I was excited when I realized the Zagg Pro Sytlus didn't require bluetooth to connect to the device...I know...I really should have known better but still I was impressed. The soft end works great for scrolling and that type of thing. When it comes to using the pencil, it works well for drawing but the good ends there. I tried using it to write on the screen and create a reminder. The experience was inconsistent at best. If you are trying to write out something, it may or may not actually result in your words being accurately captured as intended. I tried to write down my son's name and the iPad displayed 3 different versions, none of which were anywhere close to what I had actually written. I had high expectations and this didn't come anywhere close. If you are just using it for drawing, it might meet your needs. If you're writing words...you might want to try something else.

This pen works GREAT and at a fraction of the cost of the "Apple" brand. It has an extra tip and is very responsive on my IPad 6. I can't believe I waited so long to purchase one.

    Won't work... Help?

I was looking for an active stylus that was an alternative to the Apple Pencil to use with my teacher iPad so I don't need a document camera anymore. I didn't want the Apple Pencil because of the price tag and because the 2nd gen only charges when connected to the side of the iPad and my Otterbox case does not have a slot that opens so I can use the charge point (terrible design feature). Therefore, I did some research and was trying to decide between this stylus and the Logitech Crayon. The shape, color, and features of this one appealed to me more, and the supposed easy nature of turning on the stylus and using it seemed like the better deal. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it work. I looked at the instruction manual, I googled it, I watched tutorial/review videos, I made sure it was fully charged, there are no other styli connected, I even turned the Bluetooth off once to see if that was causing a problem, the light turned white when I click the power button indicating it was on, and I even let my husband try to do it and nothing worked. I can use the capacitive end just fine, obviously, but I need the active end so I can actually write on my documents. I don't like the flat design of the Crayon, but I feel like I may need to go exchange if I can't get it to work...
