ZVOX 670 performance convinces "the Boss"

We purchased the ZVOX 670 to replace an aged 5.1 system that had been built-up over time. Wife and commander never liked the 5.1 system, and it fell into disuse. And of course, you have the ongoing problems of calibration and miles of speaker wire. The major barrier to purchase was the skepticism by my wife, who managed to throw up every objection manageable! That became a good thing, cuz it caused me to do product research on both the TV and the 670 soundbase, so I could meet her questions with authority. For example, she was skeptical that the soundbase would support our TV (110 pounds). The 670 specs say 150 pounds, and when we got the system installed in our small living room, the 670 had no difficulty at all supporting the weight of the TV. I was quite sold on the 670 after listening to it at the store. I ended up disconnecting the store's subwoofer, because I wanted to hear the system 670 without what would be an added expense of spending on an additional subwoofer. Listening in a store is always a risk, since you don't have the system set up in your home viewing area. But, it was pretty obvious in the store that the system would have everything we needed for our home theater, including a solid oomph bass. After setting up in our living room, and solving the wiring mess, we were ready for the audition. We had replaced FIVE speakers and the wiring with this one 670. Yikes. Although you can run the 670 off one cable from the TV to the 670, setups to install your other gear can still be complicated. We are running our DirecTV satellite, our DVD and CD player, an AV receiver, a standalone over-the-air broadcast antenna, Apple TV, et al through the 670, so there are a number of HDMI, and optical cables snaking in the back of the TV and 670. Less than before, but still not a simple setup for that much media gear. As others have noted, the sound from the 670 is spectacular! Highly detailed, crisp but not artificial. Bass is highly adjustable and all that we needed, so no separate subwoofer needed. The lowest bass output comes from settings 0 to minus 6. We often are using minus 4. If we used settings plus 1 and higher, the boom factor would be overwhelming in our living room. I am impressed by the width of the soundstage. Sounds can be heard coming from the two side walls, which are about 15 feet apart, very impressive! I am very happy with the sound controls accessed via the remote. Every change in level of any of the settings makes a very distinct change in the sound. The three preset soundstages are also different from one another. We generally like #2. I have terrible hearing, and was surprised, for example that I was able to hear sports announcers pretty clearly on football telecasts, without the Accuvoice turned on. That was never the case before installing the 670. Big plus. Wife doesn't like the Accuvoice feature, and I will admit it changes the overall sound to something that seems strangely distorted. Usually, even with my hearing, I can adjust the sound levels, bass and treble to make dialogue pretty understandable. I would only use Accuvoice if desperate, as it takes a toll on the overall sound. The major test for our family is if the soundbase would be preferred and used for TV, DVD and CD use, and I am happy to report the answer is yes. We all like the sound, and the 670 is in near constant use with the TV. That is so much more an improvement over what we were doing before purchasing the 670! We don't mind the remote's size, about the same height and width as a deck of cards, though thinner. The shape makes the remote easy to spot with the rest of the remotes. I wish the remote had a backlight, but the controls make sense, are intelligently located, and are easy to use. Very happy after nearly a month of use. Now to see if the system has some staying power. Keep in mind that ZVOX is a USA company, so you can support some talented and innovative USA engineers. Also, customer support is USA based, and good response can be expected, which is what I have read in other reviews.

    Fine quality unit

Zvox 670 review Very happy with improvement of TV sound in sd-1 setting, and the much increased clarity of speech compared with TV's built in speakers. For bluetooth music listening of "aac" music files from my smartphone with aptX from PowerAmp, excellent transparency of sound is obtained in "accuvoice" setting - especially for fine voice singing, and very good in sd-1 setting. We don't use the other surround sound settings sd-2 & 3, because our priority is sound clarity, and increased surround sound effects come at the cost of reduced clarity. CAUTION: this unit can generate a strong bass sound, much of which radiates downwards before dispersing. The resonance of the surface that the unit rests upon will significantly affect the tightness of the bass you hear. In our case, the TV stand top was a 5/8" board spanning 36", and this resonated badly, muddying the bass sound. I greatly reduced this unwanted resonance and much improved the sound quality, by gluing a panel of 3/4" plywood to underside of the top of the TV stand, to stiffen it. Unit setup is simple and remote control operations straightforward and useful - most parameters can be adjusted from remote, e.g. bass, treble, surround sound, input source etc. Construction quality seems solid (wood cabinet) and good. The built-in amplifier is low noise, accurate and clean, power more than adequate for most listeners & rooms. In our case, the black Zvox 670 is an exact fit over our black tv stand, has no exposed cables and looks great. The soundbase unit readily doubles as a very good stereo system with blu-ray player and tv plugged in, and music also sourced via bluetooth from smartphone or computer. For half the price of one good loudspeaker you get a lot.

First one out of the box lasted a week. Exchanged it for a second, only got three years out of it, and I never abused it. Very big and takes up a lot of space. By new soundbar is 100x better and much smaller. Wouldn’t bother with this one.

I had somewhat high hopes for this setup after reading such great reviews. This was purchased to replace a 14 year old Bose 2 spkr/sub system I have in my 15x20 living space. Meh, I kind want to hook the old Bose back up, and move the Zvox to the bedroom. I'm giving it 3 stars and it probably sounds better in a bedroom. Lessen learned...save up for what's tried and true....multiple speakers that actually surround us! Now I'll probably have to wait two years to buy something nice since the Wife is not happy with the Zvox and me for not returning it within 15 days:-( I would have given it a 2 if it were any more expensive. And I'll re-review to a 1 star if the annoying speaker "thud" gets louder when it's first turned on...oh yeah, if you pause the tv for more than 10 minutes, you have to find the remote, and turn it back on. Btw, the remote probably cost Zvox 50 cents...seriously! cheap! Actually I am going to change to 2 stars right now. Sorry Zvox.
