    Synopsis

    Wrong Turn
A turn down an uncharted dirt road leads six young people into a night of pure terror in this horror story. Chris (Desmond Harrington) is driving through West Virginia on his way to a job interview when an auto accident slows highway traffic to a near standstill. Afraid he'll be late, Chris takes a detour down an old dirt road; a distracted Chris doesn't see an SUV stuck in the middle of the road before it's too late, and he plows into the back after his tires suddenly blow. The driver of the SUV, Jessie (Eliza Dushku), was out on a camping trip with four of her friends -- Evan (Kevin Zegers), Francine (Lindy Booth), Carly (Emmanuelle Chriqui), and Scott (Jeremy Sisto) -- when their tires went out, and as Jessie and Chris compare notes on their accidents, they discover that the road has been sabotaged with barbed wire. With both parties in need of a telephone, Evan and Francine are left to look after the cars while the other four set out to find help. However, Evan and Francine soon discover they've been led into a horrible trap, and as Chris, Jessie, and their friends search for help, they find that they've fallen victim not to local pranksters, but a gang of inbred backwoods killers with a taste for blood. Wrong Turn was produced in part by Stan Winston, a legendary special-effects artist whose work has appeared in such films as Jurassic Park, Aliens, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Best of the old school horror throwbacks

I can't believe it took me so long to see this movie. Out of all the recent horror throwbacks/remakes such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Cabin Fever, and House of 1000 Corpses, Wrong Turn is easily my favorite of the bunch. In fact, I would argue that Wrong Turn is much more akin to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre than the remake actually was. The film runs at a brisk 82 minutes, with no downtime whatsoever. Although the plot is lacking in originality, there were many things that caught me by surprise in this film. For one, the characters in this film are actually somewhat endearing and not walking cliches. Well, two of the characters are pretty cliche, but they're the first two killed off, so they don't make much of an impression. But the rest of the ensemble are actually smart and intelligent people proactively trying to escape the horrible situation they find themselves in, rather than doing stupid things that cause the audience to yell at the screen. There are very few "don't go in there stupid!" moments in this film, and as much as those genre conventions can be fun, it provided a nice change of pace. Also, the film sets up many suspenseful setpieces that put the audienceon the edge of their seats. For the first time in a long time, I actually felt tense watching a horror movie. As much as I love horror films, they so often entail waiting for the bad guy to jump out. You know it's a going to happen, but rather it's just a question of when. In Wrong Turn there is a lot more variety when it comes to the suspense, and I always found myself in some new tense situation, rather than retreading the same familiar ground. Another fun element was the use of location in this film. It takes place in the forests of West Virginia, where the characters are surrounded by lush greens and gorgeous scenery. It provided a nice contrast to the horror, and a good change of pace to the usual dark and sand locations that often permeate horror films. Lastly, Wrong Turn was a horror movie in the way they used to make them back in the day. The film thankfully steared clear of two elements: it wasn't ironic, and it wasn't completely devoid of any light. The current trend in horror films seems to either be ironic and wink at the audience every fifteen seconds self referrentially, or to be so dark and depressing that you want to take a shower when the film is over. Wrong Turj isn't either of these things. It's simply a good old fashioned horror flick in the best way possible. Wrong Turn does a whole lot of things right, and the only glaring place I can think of where it faulters is that it's simply not an original film by any stretch of the imagination. We've seen this same story tons of times before, and although Wrong Turn has a unique execution to the storytelling, the barebones story itself is a carbon copy of all those we've already seen. All in all, Wrong Turn may not be the most original horror movie in the world, but it does what it does extremely well, and much better than we've seen it done in a really long time.

Produced by creature-maker extraordinaire Stan Winston, WRONG TURN was among the vital horror flicks of the early 21st century that brought horror back to mainstream cinema. Alongside CABIN FEVER, SAW & HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, this film reminded audiences (and more importantly, Hollywood execs) how much fun it was to be scared at the movies (and not just "thrilled", as the 90s had folks believing). With a mutated, degenerate cannibal family laying traps & hunting human flesh as the premise, WT has great pacing, great effects & a true horror flick feel. A cheap & lovely addition to the hi-def collection!

Great horror movie, my wife and I love it! This is one of those 'it could happen to you' movies. We live in NC, but in the city. We have been to the Appalachian mountains at the NC and WV border, where movies like this and Deliverance were filmed. People think it's just a hokey story that makes good movies. It's not! There are things that go on there away from civilization that people don't know about, disturbing things! Maybe not to the extent in the film, but pretty close. That's what I think makes this movie more intriguing. If you haven't seen it, you should. This is a great horror movie that could pass for a true story. I highly recommend it!

The pace for which everything starts happening here is its biggest asset. This has little down time, and gets to the slashing quickly. The bond between the family of killers is well illustrated, the acting is good- especially from lead Eliza Dushku- and director Rob Schmidt gives the proceedings a very down n dirty 1970s horror movie feel- in the best possible way.

Wrong Turn is my favorite movie of all time. Sure the sequels wrecked its good name, but I cannot stray away from the fact that I love this film to death, no pun intended. Some people might say that horror movies like this one are too simplistic, but simplicity, in its finest form, is brilliance.
