Posted by: Wildernessnut from Yorktown on 05/18/2013This is a good device for keeping track of location when traveling in areas that are away from civilization such as some parts of the Appalachian Trail. The device is easy to use and portable. Just clip on a backpack or jacket. I suppose there could be many applications for this product.

Has worked great for me

Posted by: NMBill from New Mexico on 04/04/2013Be aware. This device requires an annual fee, which is charged to your credit card automatically. One can cancel the service. Read the fine print.
I don't understand reviewers who have found the signal intermittent, unless they are in heavily obstructed areas, or have defective units. I can't speak for them, so won't guess what their issue might be. My unit consistently sends updates. I am in the big sky, desert Southwest, so this may be a factor.
I use the tracking feature all the time and send occasional "I'm OK" messages. In my experience, the signal always gets through. I like the tracking feature, because I often hike or motorcycle #on and off road# alone. Should I ever be injured and unable to send an SOS signal, my family can easily see where I am, should I fail to check in or return home.
I often save my tracks, when I return home from a new area, so I can refer to them later. I'll store many of them in Google Earth -- very simple. This device is fairly simple and one needs to understand its limitations. It can't send messages composed on the spot #see SPOT Connect for that#, only pre-composed messages to those you pre-designate should receive them.
The unit is rugged -- it rides on the handlebars of my dual sport bike and is subject to a fair amount of heat, dust and vibration. I put it inside the luggage of my road motorcycle and the signal always gets through. As I use it a few hours at a time, then turn it off on reaching destinations, the batteries never seem to wear out. I carry extras, but never seem to need them on trips.
I don't go out in the desert alone any more -- my SPOT is always along.

Next to worthless product

Posted by: outdoorplay from Portland on 11/27/2012Don't buy if you expect this will send a message to save you in an emergency. It's a toy that will update your location via satellite maybe a quarter of the time; the rest of the signals will never make it though. This is what I found using it on several mountaineering and backpacking trips.
Also, if you want to buy this toy (which I don't recommend), VERY CAREFULLY read their full Terms and Conditions which is hidden deep in their web site. You'll find pages and pages of legal contract terms that gives them right to bill you for many additional charges to you fail to follow their terms to the letter.
Stay away from this operation!

Messages don't go through and I dont know it.

Posted by: Bonefisher from New Orleans, LA on 10/21/2012As an avid outdoor enthusiast in Louisiana, I hunt and saltwater fish in a lot of areas where there is no cell phone service. I was hoping that this SPOT unit was going to give me good communications in these remote areas I go to [some parts of Louisiana and out in the gulf fishing.]
The biggest problem with the SPOT is that it "misses" a lot of the check-in messages I send to my wife back home. On a number of occaisons, I would come home and she would say "why didn't you check in with me on your unit?" I know I sent the check in messages numerous times during the day but she did not get them. My SPOT doesn't tell me if the message got through. So I'm doing my part, trying to stay in touch, she's not getting my messages, and in the end the SPOT is just plain confusing [not to mention testing my relationship with my wife!].
What if I had a similar situation when I need SOS life saving support? I just can't bank on this SPOT for that situation, so I returned it. Not going to risk my life on a unit that doesn't tell me even if help is on the way. I'm supposed to guess and hope the message got out?
The last straw was that after my device was getting only intermittent messages through at best, I called SPOT customer care to have them solve this problem. Here's what happened:
1. The front line person told me a technicial specialist would call me back to troubleshoot. They called back 5 days later.
2. The technicial was curt with me, expressed no real spirit of making it right with, and said he just cant help out after going through some "basic checks" on the unit.
If the customer care doesn't care, and the product does not work as advertised, why bother with all the trouble? I wish SPOT would be more forthcoming about their shortcomings, and wish they would stand beind thier customers when the unit does not work well at all.
What a mess.

Great way to track your path on vacations

Posted by: wood1234 from Atlanta, Georgia on 07/19/2012The spot is a great addition to our vacations. It provides piece of mind knowing that you can get help at the touch of a button. It is also fun for family and friends to follow you on your trip. On our recent trip hiking out west, we were able to download all the points to a map and see exactly where we were hiking. A definite "must buy" ...
