Brilliant. A+ Value. You need this in your kit

I used the EF-S 24mm f2.3 today. Excellent. A wide angle prime for $150 convinces me that canon is paying attention to what we want.
The build quality is excellent. It has a solid metal mount.
The image quality is very good. There's a little bit of chromatic aberration with the aperture wide open (to be expected). But, it produces nice images with a lovely bokeh. the focusing is a little weak at infinity. But, otherwise nicely sharp. It's a spectacular lens for the price and will take up only a small corner of your camera bag and budget.
STM drive is noiseless and fast focusing.
I'm thrilled. Canon... if you are reading this. Please continue to make affordable prime lenses of this build quality. You build em... I will buy them.
Still... This is an excellent lens for not a lot of money. This is an A+ value.

Great lens for the price!

I love this lens! I use it on my Canon 70D. It's a perfect walking around lens. It actually hasn't left my camera since I purchased it 6 weeks ago. I mainly take photos of my children and I love the look this lens gives my photos!

Almost makes the SL1 into a pocket camera

BLUF: Light, compact, well-built and a solid optical performer.
The EF-S 24mm is the third STM prime in Canon's lineup (following the EF-M 22mm F2.0 and the EF 40mm F2.8), and shouldn't be the last. The compact pancake design makes for a great experience on smaller Canon bodies like the SL1 (100D). (I'd like to see folding optics like the Nikon D3300's kit lens too!) The barrel is plastic, but it's nicely textured and feels solid. The front optics look lost in a sea of plastic, but this was probably done to get a 52mm filter ring to match the 40mm STM lens, the 50mm F1.8, and other inexpensive Canon lenses. (The size of the EF mount also precludes making a lens with a diameter much smaller than this.)
It features solid optical performance, with no obvious flaws in color rendering, distortion sharpness.
Autofocus is not as quick as ring USM, but it's about as fast as the micromotor version you'd find on lenses like Canon's 28mm f1.8 USM. Manual focus is...odd - like there's a slight delay - due to the focus-by-wire system (this also plagues most micro 4/3 lenses). Autofocus continues to be accurate in relatively poor light.
For the money, this lens is very tough to beat! If you have a Canon crop body, this is a much better buy than the 50mm F1.8 lens for a number of reasons (smaller, better built, faster and more accurate autofocus).

Nice, Crisp Photos

I've been wanting a wide angle lens but couldn't fork over the money for a really nice one so I opted for this one. I took it to Iceland with me to break it in. It works great for close-up shots.

Great all around lens

Great for capturing a full frame picture that others lenses couldn't, easy to carry also for getting everyone in the picture in group photos.

Light and versatile.

This is a very light and versatile lens. I use it on my Canon 70D and with it being a crop sensor, at 24mm it made it very handy to take pictures of my family, friends, and everything in between (i.e. having to back up a lot like you would with a 50mm f1.8 on a crop sensor).

Since purchasing this lens, I've basically ditched my 18-55mm kit lens in favor of the 24mm pancake. It's just wide enough for everyday practical use on my Canon T3i without having to spend extra on one of the higher-end wide angle lenses, and the f/2.8 aperture has come in very handy versus the limited aperture of the kit lens. The quality of images is excellent, and the bokeh, while not quite as dreamy as the 50mm 1.8, is still very nice. Focusing has been quick and accurate, and is much quieter than on my other lenses, which is also nice.
It might be a little lacking for pros or very experienced amateur photographers, but if you're still a relatively casual photographer like myself, this is a huge step up from the kit lens, and combined with the 50mm 1.8 and a decent zoom lens, it's a great option to get a nice range of focal lengths covered. It's built really well, and seems like it should last for plenty long enough for to get good use of it and lots more practice before feeling the desire to upgrade.

worth the money

I have a Canon 70D that has the APS-C sensor. I bought a "Nifty Fifty" 50mm 1.8F Canon lens and LOVED it. I shoot pics of my family almost exclusively and with kids its hard to get quick shots let alone crisp focus because they are always moving. I liked the more natural view of the fixed lens but needed a closer focal range than the 50 on an APS-C.
Its quick and accurate and switches to Video perfectly because its also an STM. The lens has quality construction. The glass is quite small and gives the impression of cheap but I can't complain about focus, field of view or sharpness. It does what I need without spending $1500 for the L-Series lens.

Great for traveling

I love how light and small this lens is. This a good everyday carry around lens. I like it a little better then the 40mm stem lens. The colors are very nice from a 70D.

Nice affordable lens

I was looking for a lens that would blur my background but not my wallet and I'm happy I went with this one. My current use for it is filming beauty videos.
