I fell in love with this thing immediately out of the box. It's really beautiful although the brushed aluminum front actually appears more of a dark grey in light, rather than black. The silver model is so gorgeous I almost wish I'd chosen it, but I have no other silver components. More importantly, sound quality: Superb. You know how some audiophiles claim they can hear detail they never heard before on the same old discs? Well in this case it's 100% true. I'm using the coax digital out, as I compared that with the analog RCA outs and found that my old receiver's DAC was a bit nicer sounding than the on-board DAC. However, I will say it was incredibly close and required a lot of back and forth. I must have played over 100 discs by now, both factory made and homemade CD-R, spotless discs and discs with some light marks, and have not heard a single skip, not had a single disc be unable to be read. I'm confident in this player's ability to read discs without a problem. I did check the firmware, and it shipped with the latest available. I can't see any need for it to ever be updated since everything I own is playing fine on it. There are some nice features, such as the ability to reduce the brightness of both the display and the power button. When in stand-by mode, you can turn the unit on by hitting the eject button on the unit itself, and hitting a 2nd time to eject. This comes in handy for loading discs without needing the remote to turn it on. I guess my only complaint would be the remote buttons being a bit small and I did have one button which got stuck in the plastic while trying to program a disc, but that only happened once. There's a >10 button which doesn't function as far as I can tell. To program a track above 10, you still enter the individual numbers separately. Perhaps that's something they changed with an update. Folks like me who used DVD and blu-ray players for their CDs for years will be happy to know that this player has a proper time display, including the countdown time between tracks. (if the disc happens to have it) I like having that for some reason. And yes, to answer a question I keep seeing everywhere on various players, this does play continuous/crossfaded tracks seamlessly, no gap between tracks. Back to the looks, I was surprised to see that the top and sides have a textured, 'cottage cheese' style paint with little bumps in it. It looks great though, just seems an odd choice. I highly recommend this player.
