    Synopsis

    3:10 to Yuma
Desperate for money, frontier rancher Van Heflin holds outlaw Glenn Ford at gunpoint, intending to collect the $200 reward. While both men await the train to Yuma that will escort Ford to prison, the cagey outlaw offers Heflin $10,000 if he'll set Ford free. The rest of the film is a sweat-inducing cat-and-mouse game between captive and captor, interrupted with bursts of violence from both Ford's gang (commandeered by Richard Jaeckel) and the vacillating townsfolk. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a must own classic for Western fans that chronicles the struggle of a Rancher driven into financial ruin by drought which forces him to take on a dangerous job for a bit of cash. He must escort a dangerous outlaw by the name of Ben Wade to a train bound for Yuma while being hunted and persued by the rest of Wade's gang. It's a suspenseful tale and this original film adaptation of Elmore Leonard's story is devoid of the action set pieces and superfluous drama that the 2007 remake featured. Criterion presents 3:10 to Yuma with one of it's most stunning transfers--perfectly showcasing the beauty of black and white photography. It also features a nice even grain that keeps the picture looking natural and provides a nice texture. A lossless mono soundtrack is available for purists and a 5.1 audio option is also available. The package is rounded off with several interviews an essay and beautiful cover art. It's a bit pricy, but Criterion's films are always a cut above.

Based on a story by Elmore Leonard (who had yet to become the major figure of popular fiction that he is today), this western from Delmer Daves is a crackling countdown to flying lead as rancher Van Heflin tries to get outlaw Glenn Ford on the eponymous train to Yuma, Arizona. Criterion's video transfer, made from a 4K scan of the original camera negative, is a knockout, as is the audio presentation. Extras are limited to a couple of 15-minute interviews and the usual Criterion booklet, but both interviews (with Elmore Leonard and Peter Ford) are illuminating, and well worth a watch.

I enjoyed this movie mainly because of the two great actors. If I had not watched the newer version I would have enjoyed it much more. The two plots are very close but with different endings.
