Q: Would I need trend or another anti virus program.?

A: No this is not normal. I would suggest after it is fully charged, to use it until it is fully drained of power and charge it again. If you have the same results, I would return it to Best Buy for an exchange
Q: is this a new laptop or renewed ...
A: I bought it new. I don't know that I would recommend it. It totally locked up once (cursor would not move - like Windows 98b), and on 3 occasions (so far) the screen has gone black. When that happens you need to hold the power button for 2-3 minutes to get it to power back up. I've rebooted a few times because it got so slow.
