    Synopsis

    Army of Darkness
The third in director Sam Raimi's stylish, comic book-like horror trilogy that began with The Evil Dead (1982), this tongue-in-cheek sequel offers equal parts sword-and-sorcery-style action, gore, and comedy. Bruce Campbell returns as the one-armed Ash, now a supermarket employee ("Shop Smart...Shop S-Mart") who is transported by the powers of a mysterious book back in time with his Oldsmobile '88 to the 14th century medieval era. Armed only with a shotgun, his high school chemistry textbook, and a chainsaw that mounts where his missing appendage once resided, the square-jawed, brutally competent Ash quickly establishes himself as a besieged kingdom's best hope against an "army of darkness" currently plaguing the land. Since the skeleton warriors have been resurrected with the aid of the Necronomicon (the same tome that can send Ash back to his own time) he agrees to face the enemy in battle. Ash also finds romance of a sort along the way with a beautiful damsel in distress, Sheila (Embeth Davidtz), and contends with his own doppelganger after mangling an important incantation. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I knew for years that there were many versions of this movie made and released over the years but I was happy with my Anchor Bay Special Edition and planned to stick with it. Well, that was before I learned that none of the previous releases were from Master Prints and that the TV version included some extended scenes as well. Learning that this new Blu-Ray release did included 1 version from scans of the Master (The International Cut) as well as the fact that it also includes a copy of the TV version was enough to get me to open my wallet once again and I'm glad I did. The Windmill Scene in the TV version is awesome and should have stayed in all versions of the film. Anyways, I would certainly recommend this 3 Disc Collector's Blu-Ray edition to any serious fan of the film. I only wish Best Buy would pack their shipments better as once again I received a smashed up case and it's a special case that can't easily be replaced. If possible, get your copy at a store location and do not rely on the postal service as Best Buy's packing for shipments leaves a lot to be desired.

If you're reading reviews for this movie, you're not interested in hearing about the film. You've seen the movie, and you've likely seen the three other versions included in this three-disc set. No, you're here to get a fan's opinion on the supplemental features. Well, to answer your question, you won't be disappointed. The Criterion Collection raised the stakes for special features on their releases and fortunately for fans of movies that aren't so serious, several boutique companies have followed suit and started jam-packing our favorite films with archival-worthy features. As I stated before, there are FOUR version of the film, which you've no doubt already seen, but the pride and joy is the director's cut on blu ray for the first time. There are also new interviews with Bruce Campbell and a slew of other goodies ready to prepare you for a Deadite invasion in your home theater. Overall, highly recommended as the definitive release for Army of Darkness. Now go give Ash some sugar, baby.

I've been an Evil Dead fan for as long as I can remember. If you're a fan and haven't purchased this movie yet then this is the copy to pick up. This is the ultimate collection of this film. I don't think they can cram anymore bonus footage/ additional footage unless there's an additional commentary track but I don't think that'll happen. Frankly I have 4 different mediums of this film and many other franchises. This collection has 4 versions of the film; Theatrical 81 minutes (1.85:1) Director's Cut 96 minutes (1.78:1) International Cut 88 minutes (1.78:55) and the Television Version 90 minutes with additional footage (1.33:1). I have only managed to watch the theatrical and the directors cut. It's somewhat refreshing to watch and something new has popped up from the added footage. Great collector's set for die hard fans but if you already own the screwhead edition and don't really care for picture quality, additional footage and enjoy the film for what it is save your money when the entire trilogy to be released with all the bells and whistles.

A tribute to the Sinbad movies

4 of 5 stars for the ah ah sci-fi? action? fantasy movie Army of Darkness. I first looked at the cover art and read the liner notes and thought "here we go with a real-B movie, sigh". I started watching and it was funny and interesting. Watching the Blu-Ray I was really impressed with the image quality--super sharp and clear, it looked almost like video rather than film. So early-on, I'm thinking this is a spoof movie, but no, it was a straight fantasy/comedy movie. Then it hit me! This is a tribute to the Ray Harryhousen movie (Sinbad). Then I noticed this movie has everything from stop-action creatures, alot of rubber suits and alot of real models of creatures. Yeah, some CG, but not much. It really has the look and feel of the old Sinbad movies. The plot is of a "S-mart" sales guy getting transported to the 1300's to fight against Deadites and recover an artifact book. Bruce Campbell did an outstanding job in the lead role. This movie was a pleasure to watch. Stupid comedy in places, old-style effects, silly quest and it is all fun fun fun! This is on my watch-it-again list.

I've had the opportunity to watch all versions of the movie included in this collection. The Theatrical Cut looks great but pretty much identical to the "Screwhead" edition. Some footage that is inter-cut into the Director's Cut definitely has some very noticeable excessive grain and film scratches. These added shots are very obvious and tend to be only a few seconds in length. It's a bit disappointing but, it doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the movie. The Director's Cut is also the only film that contains a commentary track. The International Cut looks the nicest out of the three HD versions. Vivid colors and crisp clarity. The TV cut is tacked on to the disc like an afterthought, looks poor and is in standard definition full-frame as expected. It has no chapter options so you must fast forward and rewind manually, which isn't the greatest but a welcome bonus.

What can I say about Army Of Darkness, well it is part 3 of the Evil Dead franchise. Bruce Campbell gives the best or one the best fun performances of his career. Director Sam Raimi delivers another fantastic fun film. Please note you don’t need to watch Evil Dead 1 or 2 to enjoy this film, this film is pretty self-explanatory. It takes a man from our time who is fighting demonic possessed beings to medieval times. It’s a wild ride. Shout! Factory went all out on producing new features for the fans as well as bring all the old ones. This set does contain 4 versions of the film. The Theatrical Cut, The Director's cut, The International cut and the TV cut (in SD). The only drawbacks is that both the Theatrical Cut & The Director's cut are missing seconds of footage. The film was co-financed by Dino De Laurentiis in 1992 and released by Universal Pictures theatrically in 1993.

      Great movie, average package

This is one of my favorite crazy films of all time, so judging by the pure fun and enjoyment I get out of watching it I could rate this as Excellent. However, the disk has almost no extras. Also I prefer the Director's Cut which should have been the version released on Blu-ray. The picture is fantastic though, practically leaping off the screen at times, which is good and bad in that sometimes you can see clearly that the backgrounds (for instance) are matte paintings, etc. which isn't the fault of the makers of the disc. Overall it's a so-so package for a great, fun movie, even if it's not the best version of it. If it eventually comes out on Blu-ray, purchase the Director's Cut! If you don't the deadites will swallow your soul!

Whether this is your favorite or least favorite entry in the Evil Dead franchise, Bruce Campbell / Sam Raimi fans should rejoice! If you haven't picked this film up yet on Blu-ray, make no mistake - this is the definitive release and likely will be for a long time! Three versions of the film, all with gorgeous transfers, the discs are loaded with insightful special features, and it features gorgeous new artwork on the slipcover and reversible sleeve (original theatrical art is on the back side). Scream Factory knocked it out of the park on this one! If only the other films in this franchise were treated with so much love!
