My Old Convection Oven Wins
|Posted .Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.Features
Quality4 out of 5Value4 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5I really looked forward to trying this air fryer. First, I tried- Dehydrating: Took 8 hours for apples (and they’re still far from crisp), making loud fan noise as if it was frying (55db). Compared to convection oven (35 db). Afterwards, I read the note in the little (minimal) manual that said it can take 2-24 hours to dehydrate, although the default is two hours at 90 degrees, which might dehydrate paper - lol. 24 hours might have produced good results, but that’s just too long for a machine that makes that much noise. Also, one would think having two levels/baskets would mean more capacity. Well, yes, but……Only if you want to have to remember to switch the baskets several times throughout the operation. Oh – and stir and re-spread the contents. Pretty work intensive, due to the small cooking surfaces. Why not do it in my convection oven on one large shelf? My take – Failure as a dehydrator. Next, I tried- Frozen wings and sweet potato waffle fries (using both levels/frying racks): I quickly discovered the upper level cooks MUCH faster than the lower when both are being used. So much that I think I would need to use only one level in the future, rendering this machine half the advertised capacity. The sweet potato fries burned in places, setting off a smoke detector, before they were even close to being cooked through. Knowing that, I’d make adjustments next time, using only the lower level and turning the temp down. Also bear in mind sweet potatoes have more sugars in them, so will burn more easily than regular fries. The wings came out really good. Crispy and cooked through – with monitoring and adjustment. They did, however, take about 40 minutes, and I believe my countertop convection oven might do just as good a job in the same amount of time, with much greater capacity to spread out the food and cook it evenly. I will attach a photo of my first attempt at the sweet potato fries, showing the mix of burned and not-quite-cooked parts. Last, I tried- Frozen, breaded chicken tenders: Results were crispy, moist, and delicious. I’m not sure if my convention oven would cook them quite as quickly or as crispy, but probably not that much difference. I didn’t try the rotisserie feature. Maybe it would work for a small chicken or game hen, but my experience with a Ronco Showtime Rotisserie tells me that although it’s an awesome way to cook delicious food, the spattering fat quickly creates a clean-up issues. If I start Jonesing for a rotisserie chicken, I’ll get one take-out to avoid the cleanup. SOME PROS: One big plus with this fryer vs. some oven-types, is that the surfaces are cool to the touch. Hot air is exhausted out the back, so just keep it out about six inches from any walls. Other pluses are easy-to-figure-out controls, and the non-stick baskets/trays were VERY easy to clean. Notes: 1.Using the air fry function confirmed the fan is just as loud during air frying and dehydrating. Not really conducive to having a conversation in the same room. This unit badly needs a variable-speed fan to address that issue. 2. Using this fryer, I was reminded that although yes, air frying is healthier than deep-frying, those wings, fries, breaded tenders and fish, etc., are still pretty unhealthy. I would, however take advantage of having this unit for healthier, unbreaded/unbattered foods (chicken breasts, fish filets, etc.) I might otherwise bake or grill and possibly save some time (as long as I don’t need to cook in anything other than small-ish volumes). 3. Given my old countertop convection oven will bake two 12-inch pizzas (just to give an idea of cooking area), it doesn’t make a lot of sense to take up the space on my countertop with this air fryer that takes up almost as much space, has such a smaller capacity, and really doesn’t offer anything unique or special to my cooking needs. Final note: I returned this air fryer and will look forward to using my good old countertop convection oven until it wears out. Then, I’ll get a full-size countertop oven/air fryer that does it all in one space.

Great airfryer. Food is great. Hard to clean.

Quality3 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use3 out of 5Its a great air fryer for anyone first timer. However, the top rack cooks faster than the bottom so I never used the bottom each which reduce the capacity. It's loud and bulky. And kinda hard to clean. The food came out perfect though. Also the door would conly close at a certain angle which is kind of annoying. This is also made in china. I have decided to give it to someone else because it doesn't make that much difference to my existing insignia 5qt airfryer.

perfect rotisserie chicken every time
|Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.Features
Quality5 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5I bought this primarily to cook rotisserie chicken. It has come through with flying colors. Perfect every time (crispy on the outside but moist on the inside). I usually do one a week, but it also does really well on chicken leg-thigh quarters, mini pizzas, etc. Of course the traditional fries, nuggets, etc are no challenge. I wrap the bottom drip tray with tin foil to avoid the cleanup. Also, if using the two trays at the same time, I swap them half way through cooking. Works for me.

Q: QuestionIf I air fry large chicken quarter legs on both trays, does the heat get distributed evenly to both trays? or the top tray will get all the heat and somewhat block out the heat from going to the second tray? Thank you.
Asked by WC2020.
- A:Answer Uneven heat is an issue for me. The top rack will be done and crispy while the bottom rack is barely cooked. There are 3 positions for the trays and I've tried every which configuration but the top rack will always be done before the lower rack. I'm resolved to cooking one rack at a time, which is frustrating.

Q: QuestionIs this a combination toaster oven/air fryer or just an air fryer?
Asked by ColbyGirl.
- A:Answer It toasts nicely, although you won't get brown on both sides. I found that, if you want to get a quicker crisp finish all around, just use the top tray for toasting.
Answered by Jhoel
Q: Questionthere is a mode button to switch from fryer to oven, how do you know which one you are on?
Asked by Bonnie.
- A:Answer With the unit on, select the mode you want by pressing the appropriate mode button. The corresponding mode indicator lights up.
