It was a rainy Saturday night, made darker by realization that, after 2+ hours of connecting video devices, placing speakers and testing component, my nice Onkyo NR626 receiver had given up the ghost. Kaput. Finished. Yea Verily, it had been released from its mortal coil. I wiped a tear from my eye, for my Onkyo receiver had been a good, trusted friend. I was sad, but I was also excited - being a techie, I'm always happy to have an upgrade to hardware, be it computer-, video-, or audio-based. I hopped on over to my trusty iMac and went straight to Amazon, which was my first mistake. All the items I looked at were either under-powered/under-featured, or way out of my price range. I then went to where I should have gone in the first place, good 'ol Best Buy. Lo and behold, Best Buy had a deal going on with a Pioneer Receiver, from its Magnolia line. Looking excitedly at the plethora of features, my smile grew and grew, especially at the point where I checked the price, which was over $300 off the usual price. Sold! I hurredly purchased the receiver, fearing that the sale might be over the next day (it wasn't). It was in stock at my local store, and would be ready for me to pick up tomorrow. Pick up was as easy as ever, and I soon was the proud owner of my new receiver. I kept my old receiver hooked up, which made the transfer of wiring from old receiver to new easy and straightforward. Within 30 minutes the new receiver was back in place and raring to go. Now for the big test! Everyone has their go-to movie. You know the one I mean. Whenever you get any new audio or video equipment upgrade, you HAVE to watch that special movie first. For some it's Top Gun, for the fantastic screaming engines at the beginning of the movie. For others, it's something Geekier like Lord Of The Rings (when that Balrog roars and you have the right equipment, you'll swear you lost 10 pounds just from the shaking). For me, it was my good old stand-by, The Matrix! I was NOT disappointed. I ramble, but I can honestly tell you this device lives up to its hype. It performed amazingly well. The audio was crisp, clear. No distortion, not lamentations about how there just isn't enough power. Granted, a lot of that had to do with my speakers (JBL), but I can say the receiver definitely did NOT hinder the sound; indeed, it helped it immensely! But there's more to a receiver than just the sound (although that's priority). How about set up? Well, the wiring is pretty much the same from one reciever to the next. The real question is, how does it handle the switching of inputs? For the features it has, how easy it is to use them? On both these, the Pioneer gets an A+. There are many features it has that my poor Onkyo just didn't... Bluetooth access, for instance. It was SO easy to set up my phone to play through the receiver. And let's not forget the nice auto-setup for speaker volume! The pioneer comes with a microphone that listens to the audio coming from each speaker and adjusts it accordingly to ensure a perfect sound for the part of the room where you'll be sitting. Fantastic! Listen, the bottom line is, if you want great sound, easy setup and quality hardware, you'll not go wrong with this receiver. Yes, there are better ones out there, but for the money you really can't go wrong with this one.

Pretty much ok for the most part

Let me be clear. This receiver is spectacular for the price. I'm giving it 3 stars because of the poor attempt on Pioneer's part of trying to add support for things like Chromecast, bluetooth, network, etc. Fire the project manager in charge of this. I'm a network systems architect. My home network is solid (as far as home networks go). This receiver has a lot of trouble interacting with other devices on the network. Constantly throwing messages that it's offline and I should check my connections. It's a nightmare to get Chromecast to connect, initially. Admittedly, this could be a problem with the device "casting;" but I cast all the time and I've only had these issues casting to this receiver. Now, that said, once the connection is made, the quality is superb. The MCACC microphone calibration is really great and takes a lot of the fine tuning out of the equation for those of us who simply aren't expert audiophiles. I don't want this review to mislead you. Don't pass this receiver by. It's no joke. Pioneer just isn't a software company and I simply wanted others to know that there are annoyances with respect to network connectivity and the firmware interface. For the record, I plug directly into Cat6 cable (not wi-fi). I'm up to date on the current firmware. If you buy this box, update the firmware because mine was out of date when I got it. Also calling out to all manufacturers to bump up their game on firmware. Now are the days to add a rich web portal to devices...period! This isn't 1978 anymore (year of the last receiver I bought....the Rotel RX-2001). to add a portal or app that lets you easily control all aspects of your receiver through your browser. Not just the network hostname and the AirPlay password. Come on....really? Again...don't pass this box up because of quality. It earned its stripes.

Pioneer - Elite VSX-LX302 has been a great addition to a Media room (14 x 18) just upgraded to Epson 5040UB and Sony UBP X800 DVD for 4k theater experience. It was a walk in on Black Friday and the Magnolia consultant let me know this was an excellent receiver for $699 ($400 Black Friday). Was looking at other AV receivers but am glad I took this Best Buy Representatives advice. This receiver drives my 7.2 theater room like no other I have owned. (Onkyo & Yamaha). The sound processing power and Pass through 4K made it a no brainer. The sound processing of Dolby ATMOS is immersive to the viewing exsperince. My Yamaha Speakers (in wall) came to life and have never sounded so good. The 302 has excellent build quality and power distribution. The movies literally blow us away. The only downside is my wife makes me use Bluetooth Headphones because the base (Dual Polk Subs) and sound literally shake the 2400 square foot house with a movie explosion. But with Blue tooth and Internet connectivity the AV unit sounds excellent with Sony 950 Extra Bass (Excellent Surround) Headphones. After building and Upgrading my home Theater 3 times I finally got it right. The 302 is a winner buy it it won't disappoint.

After 32 years I finally decided it was time to replace my VSX-4500. It has served me well, but I just upgraded to a 4K smart TV and it was a logical companion upgrade to get the most functionality out of it. Setup has certainly become more involved over the years and it took me about three days to get everything set up to my liking, but now that it is, wow, am I impressed. My lone quibble is the lack of in-depth setup information, which is why I docked one star. The setup sheet seemed picture- reliant and didn't do a lot of explaining. I researched this head-to-head against the equivalent priced Yamaha, Denon, and Sony units. Then I listened to them in-store and the Pioneer stood out from the group in sonic quality, which is always the primary goal. I went in with the intention of buying the Yamaha based on the better THD numbers, but the Pioneer sounded better IMO. I like the multi-room setup and the phone app is great too. Hopefully this one lasts 32 years like the last one!

This is an excellent receiver. The audio quality is very good. The video is also very good. I run the video through an Optima HD25lv projector and the quality run through this compared to DirecTV hooked straight to the projector is a noticeable improvement. I also run BluRay player, Xbox one, Amazon Fire TV and the video and sound are good from all. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because after 60 days use I had to take it in for warranty repair. The receiver went in to amp diag mode and got an unrecoverable error. It could only be reset by authorized repair facility and there are only 2 in Michigan. We will see how it holds up now. But overall I am very happy with receiver and I am glad I purchased it.

Setup Easy - Difficult to Update Firmware

I got this to go with an LG OLED. Setup was pretty easy. My problem started when my LG OLED did an automatic update of its firmware. When that finished the VSX-LX302 started giving me an error code in a big gray box in the center of the screen every time I turned it on. Essentially telling me my LG had a higher Dolby Vision than the Elite would handle. When I tried to update the VSX-LX302 firmware it failed and I could not get anything out of it. It was locked up. I could turn it on and off and it would come up and tell me to update the firmware. It failed several times (like 20 times). I tried over it over the network and by USB. After about two hours it took the update. The update had been released earlier that same day. It is possible Pioneer had a glitch in the firmware download and fixed while I was trying to update it. Other than that I would recommend for sure.

Receiver connected to Samsung 4K TV and 1080P projector. Initially, had trouble producing 4K video output using Apple 4K TV. Manual not helpful. After experimenting with the settings, was finally able to get it right. If you connect this receiver using 2 hdmi outputs, you must disable dual hdmi pass through to produce 4K video to your 4K video source. The sound quality has extra punch. Never realized the potential of my Polk tower speakers until I tried to use bi-amped connection. I dont need 7.1 sound set-up afterall. Loved listening to accoustic music with this receiver.

    Great Receiver

I bought the VSX-LX302 over Cyber Monday, got a good deal from Best Buy for a great receiver. I added two Pioneer Atmos speakers to my home theater set up along with Klipsch Reference Series RP-450C Center Speaker, and ever since, enjoying the clarity and depth coming from this receiver. All the movies sound so much better and more real that I am enjoying, watching them second time. A couple of points: Make sure you follow the setup instructions and don't jump the steps, esp. configuring the MCACC at the beginning, else it will keep asking again and again. Also, watch out and remove any faulty surge protector. Great job Pioneer!
