“Does the backlit keyboard stay on or does it have a programmed time period after which it goes out. I'm returning an HP laptop as the backlit keypad goes out after 15 seconds if you don't touch the keys. Very annoying.”

The keyboard backlight goes out after approximately 30 seconds of inactivity. This is by design to save on battery power, when using battery. Unfortunately there isn't a way to force the keyboard light to stay on, even while not in use.
