Thinking about buying this for a kid that does not have a cell phone. What all can it do without being paired with a phone? Or is a phone mandatory? Could he download an email or messaging app where he could text/email with wifi? null

You'll definitely need a phone for the initial setup. There's not a lot you can do without a pairing with your smart phone: pedometer, alarm, timer, compass and HR monitor. Even while paired you're only able to receive notifications. There is no way to reply to email or text messages and it doesn't connect to WiFi either.

Without a phone it can only show time and monitor steps/pulse etc. No email or wifi support.
