The echo dot has to be connected to a network. At home the echo dot need to be connected to your home network. It will be required in order to communicate with networks associated to your current location. Sorry once connect to a wifi network and once left that coverage area you will need to search for available networks and re-assign it to one covering you home or area of preference.
