Hey Emily, negatory. You can have the echo dot without the Echo. The Echo dot DOES NOT have impressive speakers but will do the job for quick request...plus you can always plug it up to bigger speakers. (I have the Tap and the dot and use them without the echo).

You can purchase the echo dot by itself. Just know though that the sound quality of the echo dot isn’t really good and It’s best suited for say a bedroom.
