Good morning. A WORKING Alexa app must be on your cellphone for the Alexa Auto Echo to work properly. The Echo Auto does not have cellphone capability built in so it has to connect to the internet somehow. The Alexa Echo normally connects to your phone through the Bluetooth interface on your phone and then the phone connects to the outside world through its cellular connection. I have it and love it.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The Alexa app on your phone is how it’s set up, I imagine it won’t work without the app. Mine turns on when the car turns on. It probably depends on the power source.

Please try again later.Hello MattR, I understand you are interested in knowing if you need to run Alexa on your phone as well as if the Echo Auto must be powered for it to work. You do not have to have Alexa running on your phone to be able to us your Echo Auto, however you will have to set it up with your Alexa App on your phone. The Echo Auto will have to connect to your vehicle while your vehicle is on for it to work, once you turn your vehicle on your Echo Auto will alert you that it is on by playing a sound and your phone will ask to connect to it, but you will not have to have your Alexa App running on your device.
