You can use them independently. If you leave one of the buds in the case and put the other in your ear either will work by itself.

Yes, you can leave one in the case but in my experience so far, that doesn't properly disengage the other - causing very very choppy audio if you walk away. I prefer to just use my right earbud all the time but maybe the left one is "primary"? Anyway, maybe there's a fix but I haven't figured it out yet after a few days, and it's far from obvious or automatic.
