This is a smaller version of the Echo. A full Echo is not needed for the Dot to work. The Dot just does not have the larger speaker built in, but I found the Dot speaker to be quite loud. Plus you can plug in external speakers to the Dot.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it is a standalone device. 3/4 of the full size Echo is a speaker. The Dot has smaller speakers. We connected it to a Sony speaker that was half price and the combination is better than the full size Echo and still under $100 total.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The dot is a stand alone product (requires wifi/internet access). The only real difference is that the echo has an awesome speaker with it. So music sounds great. You can get a speaker to plug (or use Bluetooth) for the dot if you want to hear quality audio
