It should. My daughter is two and she asks it to play songs for her at night and it understands.

It is fairly forgiving on speech impediments and will reply "I didn't quite understand that, can you repeat it?" or the like if it did not understand you.

It does adapt to your speech patterns and you can do an initial speech recognition in the setup through the app. I know people who have bought this for their family members who speech is not well due to a stroke and it helps them tremendously with light switches and lamps. I have a 3 year old who calls it A-wexa and 90% it will detect her saying the name. She has also started and stopped music with it as well as turning lights on and off with it. Although it will only understand what she is asking for about half of the time.
