It is always listening 24/7 for that keyword " Alexa" . The only way to power it off is to unplug. If you are paranoid about it listening to everything, there is a mute button on top that you can hit and the lighted ring around the top will turn red and it will not hear anything no matter how many times you say " Alexa".
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Alexa will not pick up and send out information until it hears the wake word "Alexa" before your inquiry. Everything you do with Alexa is sent to your Amazon account where you can view it on a home computer or the smart phone or tablet on which you have the Alexa app installed that is connected to the same account. These interaction "cards" can be deleted. After looking into the security issues myself before purchasing, I was satisfied that Amazon has taken a lot of privacy precautions so I'm not worried about it. That being said, there is a microphone mute button on the unit you can press if you want to kill the mic. The light ring around the top will stay lit red to remind you the mute is on.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not much goes on in the room that would be interesting. When there is, we blindfold it or pull the plug :)

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. That's on odd question. From what I know she only records after the key word being Alexa is said. Just like "hey Siri" for iPhones.
