No. Both stand alone on their own. The echo has its own speakers which are better than the dot. The dot has the speaker and it can also be connected with Bluetooth or wired to your own speakers. So you might better off with the dot because it's so much less expensive. I have both. If I set a timer on one of them it only works on that one. But if I want to add to my shopping list or to-do list they each save to the app. I have them connected to my WeMo Outlets and love them.

If you read the Echo's description and the Echo Dot's description you should be able to see the differences between the two. I have a Dot and it's really pretty cool. It depends on what your looking for and how much you want to spend. Best bet is to go to Amazon's Echo page and read up, it should help with your decision.
